Maybe it's like the Gerudos in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  They're an all-female warrior tribe who take excursions into the castle town to find "boyfriends".  Only one boy is born every 100 years, and he becomes the king of the tribe.

Maybe those MLP are taking excursions into Dollar General and finding "boyfriends" among the fakies!

Ahhh...but Faust was only creating from G4...there is a whole other mystical world before her Ponyville. I am sticking with "magic"...best answer for a toy line about little plastic pastel ponies.
