Restoration problem: Off white head, white body
« on: April 19, 2022, 09:53:16 AM »
I still hate that my G1 Majesty still faded back to really off-white even after two sun exposures. However, it's been a few years since I've done anything about it. I initially thought the sun exposure trick was permanent but after my experience, it really isn't. It's temporary at best. And I haven't heard of another method to try...

Here's some pictures:

Do you see what I mean? It's her poor head 😭 none of my other white mlps have this problem

(Pictures took in front of the window of my back door for good lighting)

And then the weird yellow spots on her legs? But that's a whole other problem.

Any advice?

How long did you sunfade her head for? I had the same problem with the 2 Majestys that we have, and I left the heads in the sun-facing window until they matched the bodies; probably a couple of months. That was a couple of years ago, and they haven't turned back yet.

As for the yellowed spots on her legs, was she stored in a bin with other ponies? Maybe one with neon yellow hair had contact with her and stained her. If that's the case, I've also had success removing such stains with sunfading.

I sunfaded her twice a long time ago, so I don't remember how long I did it for. She would stay lightened for a while until it wore off. I can't figure out how to make it so that it's permanent. Maybe it's not and you have to just keep doing it?

As for her body, I think(?) I only sunfaded her head since it was the most noticeable. But it's been so long I'm not sure. We're talking pre-2019 I think.

One theory I have is maybe the person I bought her from swapped her head with another Majesty and that's why her head and body don't match colors. But perhaps that theory is a bit out there...

I could try again but I've already attempted it two times in the past so how worth it is it to do it again if it's not going to work.

Where do you live? How strong is the sun there? Depending on where you are sunfading can takes days, weeks, or months.

I live in Texas. Austin area. The sun is pretty strong though I'd probably wait until summer cause we've been having more stormy weather recently.

Yes, that would be some pretty strong sun :P I live in Florida and it takes about 3 days to sunfade a pony if it's kept in a car window on the dash. Yours would probably take about the same, maybe an extra day or two.

Here's some info about sunfading - http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body#SunFading

As for the yellow spots, you can probably sun fade those too. Or use a peroxide bath, which is also detailed on that page. You'd need to keep her tail out of it. You could tie her body up so that only her legs are in the bath, and cover the rest with aluminum foil.

One theory I have is maybe the person I bought her from swapped her head with another Majesty and that's why her head and body don't match colors.

Not likely...head/body mismatch is very common in some ponies, and Majesty is one of the worst. Majesty, being a playset pony, is plagued with quality control issues. Seems like there was a post about this recently, or it was at least talked about in another thread, but maybe someone else reading this will remember and can link it in here if you're interested. Perhaps the heads are made from a different batch of plastic, or in a different facility. No one is sure why, but there are certain ponies that consistently have this issue.

Another thing I do with my white ponies before I sunfade them is scrub them with oxyclean while I clean them up, and it really helps with whitening, but not everyone recommends it, so use with care. Texas definitely gets stronger sun than I do in Wisconsin, so at least you have that! I would defer to the mlppreservationproject site that BlackCurtains suggested. There's a lot of tried-and-true advice on there.

Another day another Majesty in crummy condition. :P I've not even tried to sunfade mine personally, but it's worth another go if it bothers you.

I guess I'm more of a newb than I thought cause I hadn't realized this was a common problem XD

I had gotten this Majesty in a set of ponies on Ebay so it's not like she was one I especially wanted, but I still kinda like her.

I have a Majesty with the same issue! I would suggest either to continue to sun fade or use the peroxide bath mixed with sun. I have a UV light box that I use, I use some creme developer and leave the ponies in the box for 24 hours, then keep repeating. I'm still working on my Majesty. I believe in you!

Mine looks exactly the same way, and I have tried everything over the decades.

I am sure they made the heads in different batches from the bodies, those are different plastic mixes, for sure.
