I love the pony smell, too much. I think it makes me want to buy more of them that's the problem. -_-;

Judging by the responses to the thread, I guess they are scented! They must have stopped at g2, as my Lightheart does not smell one bit!

The LOL dolls seem to have a similar smell to them.

And Hasbro has done it again! Created another potential pony sniffer.

Man if only life could be like "pony smelled" it would be so awesome. No more gross smells anymore.

New G2's did have a smell, but it wasn't pleasant or particularly strong.  I remember being terribly disappointed when I opened the first wave (clever clover, ivy, etc.) and they smelled like plastic, and not a nice plastic either.  Luckily it went away within a few days.

Oh the memories of opening a new pony and that smell. :hearts: Got very lucky in the first G1s I've ever found at a thrift store. Didn't stick, just a hint of that old school smell. :cool:

This discussion always amusus me, because here in The Netherlands, we never had that iconic pony smell. When I was a child, all new ponies had this sharp, chemical scent. I guess they travelled a different route? I love that smell just as much as you guys love the vanilla smell though, chemical or not, to me that's the classic pony smell. :P

I have smelled that iconic scent though, I think. We have a near mint Milkweed & Tumbleweed (who came from America or Canada, I'm not sure anymore) and I suspect they have that famous smell. It's very nice. ^.^

Second hand ponies though, aaaaaaah... :think: Count me in on Pony Sniffers Anonymous. When my pony box has been opened for even just five minutes, the entire room smells like ponies. :hearts:

i really think its more of the smell of the plastic they are made of, not they are intentionally scented. but who knows.

It's definitely a G1 thing, like those calm smiles.

Ponyholics sniffnonymous?

The descriptions here of baby powder, vanilla, etc sort of narrow in on it, but it's a subtle and unique smell.  It took me a few ponies to get one that I thought had the smell, and once it was confirmed with some more ponies I was sure and it's wonderful even though I am hypersensitive to smells.  (maybe it was once less subtle when the ponies were new??)

Sometimes there is an unpleasant smell from leaking plasticizer especially when they've been closed up in plastic bags a long time.  Once scrubbed up nicely though, sometimes the once-grimy ponies regain that pony smell a little bit.

clapclapclapclap Hi, NightGliderSA **waits for your share of "three minutes or less"

Leave a Whisper, not all ponies still have their pony smell and I'm entirely sure whether everyone can smell the pony smell in particular or not.  Sorry you don't get to participate (yet)!

I can identify the origin of the "vanilla" smell that G1 ponies have: it's caused by deterioration. There was a study performed on old books and the origin of their distinct smell (which is strangely similar to old pony smell): http://mentalfloss.com/article/31235/what-causes-old-book-smell

While ponies are made out of plastic -- not organic materials like books -- they probably still have similar chemical reactions to deterioration which cause the vanilla smell.
