How to make tinsel behave?
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:33:21 PM »
So, I have a Blossomforth and a Glitterbelle that have horrible tinsel problems! In both cases, the hair is basically ok, but the tinsel is snarled and out of control!

How would I go about taming it? I've conditioned both ponies to little effect. I even got the hair straighteners out (on the lowest setting!) on Blossomforth, but it just made it worse!

Any tips appreciated!

If it's really really bad you can de-tinsel them, but I've never met tinsel I can't tame with boiling water, conditioner and hair straighteners :)

Boiling water? I think I'll give it a go when I get home! :D

I thought about de tinseling them but it was just too sad to contemplate. That's the point of Glitterbelle!!

hair straightener doesn't work on iridescent tinsel, which you got to see in your own example :P i think it melts them. I´ve dealt with some of mine by putting them under the stream of steaming hot water and just letting the water flow together with the hair.  might be worth a try. also, someone found a way to straighten iridescent tinsel:

hope this helps

Oooh, I'll have to give that a go too. One method on each pony and report back, maybe? Haha!

I was just coming in here to mention hair straighteners!

Thanks for the hot water tip I must try it! I love tinsel so I have a strict 'no de-tinsel' policy, no matter how unruly!

I've had no problem with simply conditioning them. I use conditioner for bleached / dyed hair (as I'm into doing crazy things with my hair as of the moment) and it works a dream.

I recommend 'Head Candy' - I believe it's a British product but you can probably get hold of it over the internet.

I once used my mom's clothes steamer and it worked! I did wet the hair before also with hot water.

If it is really bad there is a seller that sells replacement pearly tinsel.

Tho one day I'd like to take some pearly tinsel G3s and give them metallic tinsel that matches the hair color.

Wet the tinsel, place it in a damp pillow case and use a clothes iron on a flat surface over the top of the pillow case - press it dont "iron" it and dont let the pillow case or the hair in it get too warm! I know it sounds odd but honestly thats the only way I have managed to tame tinselled hair over the years.
