Variation in Sunshine
« on: April 26, 2015, 06:03:42 AM »
So, Sunshine is one of my childhood ponies, and I have had several of her pass through my hands over the last few years. All have been similar, but with varying levels of glitter loss. Recently I got a Sunshine who is pretty different from ones I have had before. I'm not suggesting she's anything special, but I just wondered if she is one of those ponies that was re-released or made in different factories or if simple batch variation could really be this distinct? New Sunshine has glitter loss but the symbols seem to be a different colour too and her body colour is very different.

What does the bottom of her feet say? The Sunlight on the left looks a little faded (you can see the discoloration around her hooves very well) and glitter symbols are known to discolor a bit (almost like rust). The right Sunlight looks like my own, a soft sky blue (her feet say Hong Kong).

One indication I think would be to check the bottom of the pony's feet. I think with the anniversary ponies Hasbro covered the original inscriptions... I don't own any of the anniversary ponies myself so I couldn't tell you.

Also aren't the anniversary g1 ponies made of a harder plastic?

Ooh, I think you have the UK variation! :) Your original pony seems to have more "coral" hair as her first stripe, compared to the more "hot pink" of the newer Sunlight, correct? I was originally under the impression that this was the original-release vs the mail-order, but I've since been informed that the forelock color actually differentiates between the US vs UK/Euro releases of the rainbow set!

I have a couple pictures of my own variations, if that will help!

(This one is harder to tell, I didn't have very good lighting. >.<)

EDIT Wait ... I thought coral was the US ... but if you're in the UK and the coral pony is from your childhood... :yikes: I'm all turned around! LOL!

Both girls have 83 Hasbro Pat Pend, Hong Kong on their hooves.

I'm sure that my childhood girl is slightly discoloured, but I don't think she was ever quite the same blue... :wonder:

There are also some other differences between them... the sun part of new girl's symbol is larger and her eyes are bigger and more rounded.

Yes, actually she does (I had assumed old girl was just faded?)

So were the UK ones produced on a different run from the US ones? I'm very intrigued! Was it just this set of rainbows that have this?

I'm going to have to go check my other rainbows now!

Rainbows are confusing because they were released in just about every combination possible.

We got a couple of releases which is what causes confusion initially. The set were released on landscape cards mainly but in the UK there was a release on the more common style portrait orientated cards.

The first set of rainbows were released in the UK on both the portrait and the landscape cards but more commonly it seems they popped up on the portrait cards.

The heart throb pink hair version came out in the UK but also in the US as did the mummy apple delight stripe version. So both locations got both versions but only on this side of the ocean did we see the portrait cards.

The mummy apple delight colour normally has a symbol with no paint underneath the glitter where as the heart throb versions can have paint under the symbols or no paint under the symbols.

The difference is most likely due to the set (or some of the set) being very very popular lines which were available over the course of a couple of years. So timing...rather than location.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Wow! I never knew any of that! Thanks for all the info. :)

It's a shame I don't know what card she came on originally...

I think I might have to keep both girls for now!
