First place pony of each race has the most votes, second place pony of each race has the second most votes. You can see the final tally of yesterday's race in the OP, as an example. The first two move onto a later round and the third and fourth ponies get eliminated altogether.

You predict who you think will get the most votes and the second most votes, but that doesn't mean you have to vote for your predicted winners, necessarily.
