Title: Scootaloo's Aunts
Post by: Bekuno on October 17, 2017, 07:37:00 AM
We found out some interesting and confirmed information regarding Scootaloo recently. Haven't heard it? Well, that's because it wasn't in the show, but one of the chapter books!

"But the books aren't canon!!"

Eh, to each their own, but a show writer confirmed it and the show has been tying in more and more to the published media

We now know that Scootloo is not an orphan like the popular fan theory suggests. Her parents just don't seem to be around much, poor Scoots  :( So who's raising her while they are away? Her aunts! Yes, aunts plural.  :) I think this is really exciting news, as we're finally seeing an LGBT+ couple in the extended MLP universe. It's understandable that they would sneak this into a book instead of the show, because it's a bit easier to sneak under the radar.

Here are pages from the book, "Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe"

This is very exciting! I really should check out the pony chapter books some time.

I hope this makes it into the show too!

I'm so so happy and excited!! :-DD

Scootaloo gets family that loves her, and we get to see a happy lesbian couple! <3

I'm totally going to buy the book; I really hope they make a cameo in the show as well!

I think it's awesome.  <3  Both that we get some insight into Scootaloo's homelife (not an orphan confirmed!) and to see LGBT representation done in a natural way.  What I mean by "natural" is that it's not an awkward "Very Special Episode" scenario, instead they are a same-sex couple who are just there and exist and don't need to be "explained".

This made me happy when it popped up on my Twitter. I actually ordered all the books after I heard about it. Has anyone else seen pixelkitties artwork of Scoot and her aunts? It's on deviantart if anyone is interested. It looks just like the show.

Aww they are so adorable!  I too am very excited to see LGBT+ represented in MLP!  I keep liking G4 more and more, and here is another great reason.  And like LadyMoondancer said, I  like how it was done in a natural and not awkward way.  Just the way it should be.     I've had LGBT+ ponies in my own imagination for many years, I'm so thrilled to see it in actual canon now.

How exciting! And it makes sense in equestria too. A world where there are way more females than males (study any crowd picture), it makes sense that same sex marriage would be a thing there. So proud of hasbro for taking a step forwards!

That's pretty cool, and aside from having a closer look at Scoot's family overall, I'd love to meet them! I hope they get cool designs if they're introduced to the tv show.

Nice throwback references.

That was my first thought too with Auntie Lofty. So very cool.

Lofty and Holiday seem like really sweet characters and I'd love to see them in the show someday :)

Lofty is one of my favorite G1 pegasi. I hope she makes it into the show! The way she is described my mind went straight to the Mrs. Cake model.

Small pet peeve, but how is this LGTB representation? They are a same-sex couple. It's lesbian representation, there's nothing bad about that.

Well, technically one or both of them could be bi.  :)  I just find it easier to say LGBT+ or queer when I don't know for sure.

But I agree, there's nothing wrong with specifically lesbian representation;  especially given that so much lesbian "representation" in other media is really just pandering to straight dudes in a pretty creepy way.

Yeah, but so could be all the mare/stallion couples on the show. And Steven Magnet could just be a really flamboyant bi dragon ;)

I don't want to fight. I'm bi but the way they are written they seem to represent a stereotypical lesbian couple and FiM is full of stereotypes.

I usually seen this kind of queer representation listed as LGBT/LGBT+/queer/etc, even within queer spaces. I don't think there's anything malicious behind it. Lesbians are still part of LGBT so its not like its a lie or misrepresentation :)

So Scootaloo's dad is an Earth pony, then? Interesting. For some reason I sorta had the idea that ponies could only reproduce with the same 'type' of ponies as them, but unless she's adopted that isn't the case then.

Not related to the representation issue (which is nice to see more officially acknowledged!) just interesting.

OMGS Sabrina! XD Loved that show. Salem was definitely the best part!

No. Why would that be? We've had ponies be different species from their offspring before.

Yes! I've been waiting for this but never thought it would happen because Hasnro wouldn't want to seem controversial. Go Hasbro! Hope they don't make them stereotypical. Just normal, like people are :)

No? Cadence and Shining Armor easily disprove this. Shining is a unicorn and Cadence is an alicorn.

There's not a lot of official pairings in the show, and the majority are same species, so it's understandable that you'd think that.  :)

Of course there's Shining Armor and Cadence, another example would be Rarity's parents (uni and earth). Big Mac and Sugarbelle don't have kids but are paired, once again uni and earth pony.

And don't forget about the cakes, two earth ponies that had unicorn and pegasi offspring!

Ah ok that's true! For some reason I was thinking of Cadance and Shining Armor as both unicorns, I think I had a brain freeze! I'd forgotten about the Cakes not being the same as well.

Still, good to see Scootaloo does have family, I did wonder as you never see anyone around with her but Dash.

I don't read the books, so maybe there's more context than what I am aware of, but it seems to me that they could be a same-sex couple, but they could also be sisters or something, like in Practical Magic or Sabrina the Teenaged Witch, lol.

Either way, I love when shows and movies have nontraditional family dynamics without making it some huge plot device.  :good:

Cuuute! Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty; what cute names too! Love this idea. It would be fun to see it referenced, even if in the background, within the show. Now I need Holiday and Lofty fan art.

I read the page in question. I wasn't convinced it was true (given the show hadn't done it) but Mike Vogel confirmed it himself so while still surprising, at least it's not an in-your-face mention but more of a subtle mention.

We don't know the official appearance as they aren't really described in the book, but there's already fan art out there.

Though I personally assume Aunt Lofty looks like G1 Lofty  :P

I really hope they appear in the show sometime! If heterosexual couples can appear in the show, then there's no real reason they shouldn't be able to show up, as well. I think it is important.

They'd BETTER put these two in the show! And very happy they used a G1 name. <3 Glory and Moondancer would be proud.

Hmm, Lofty, I believe Holiday is a previous generation reference. I'm going to admit more than anything this makes me think about the implications and how it explains some aspects of Scootaloo; first of all that Lofty only moved in recently which adds a bit to the ambiguity surrounding Scootaloo's ability to fly (the show hasn't directly stated one way or the other and everything we've seen could also be interpreted as her not being very good at it and being discouraged, since the Pony that's had the biggest part in raising her isn't a Pegasus she could just be behind the eight ball from having to figure mostly flying out on her own)

Plus the fact that the same part of the book mentions Scootaloo seeing Aunt holiday as being "interested in what was on her mind, unlike her parents"; granted perspectives are subjective, it could be that they want to spend more time with her but their jobs don't allow it, but it's still how she sees it and does explain both why she wanted Rainbow Dash's approval so badly in the earlier seasons and her perspective in Parental Glidence
