Title: Suspicious South African seashell auction - ebay seller crownparke
Post by: SFlame on June 19, 2014, 11:15:41 AM
So this is not saying this is a scam, but I wanted to make arena members and in particular nirvana collecting arena members aware of this.

Today a South African seashell finished on ebay

My other half was bidding on it for me as a present (obviously they don't come up often)

Here's the weird thing - he was heavily outbid yet he got an offer from the seller, saying that the USA buyer was fraudulent and he couldn't offer it as a second chance offer due to being a private seller. But he could send an invoice through paypal...

So he asks me what I think... I've got alarm bells going off all over for the following reasons:

1. Private listing can't see the bidders
2. Offering the listing outside of ebay
3. Offering the listing to someone who was not the second chance bidder
4. Previous feedback is only for 0.99p stamps
5. Suddenly listing expensive llandro items once 25 feedback have been hit

Maybe I am just being paranoid but just something doesn't seem right here..

If it was me I'd pass, and report the seller.  It gets down to, is it worth the chance that they're not scamming you..  That's not a chance I'd take.

I agree that doesn't sound right.   It could be fraud although wouldn't you be covered if you paid through paypal?
Seems like the seller could also be trying to get a sale while skipping ebay fees- but the whole thing seems very suspicious.

I agree with your alarm bells and myself personally I would pass.

I'd say that since PayPal would cover you, you don't really have anything to lose. So long as you claim within 40 days, you'd get your money back, unless he provided proof of postage and it did genuinely go astray in the post, then a 50/50 would probably be reached.

There was a South African Seashell up for sale on UK eBay a while back, there was a thread made about it since the pictures had been taken from an African auction site.

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,348404.0.html

I had been watching that auction and wondered if it was the same seller as previously, however the the location and such are different.

I'm still unsure about it though, the pictures look familiar.

They have different locations for their different listings... Hmm even more suspect

I've just looked up the ID of the seller mentioned in that thread and they are NLARU.

I'm comparing the feedback of both sellers and I'm slightly alarmed by the similarity of the items bought and sold, by both.

Run sflame. Run far, far away.

Doesn't sound good :| and if the user has no money for paypal to take, they will give you "Oh I am sorry this user has no money to refund you, but once they have it we will refund you" that happened to me with an item a few years ago. seller closed his/her bank account and paypal could not reimburse me, but I still have an IOU if the seller ever registers again, riiiight it's been years. Be very careful about that.

I thought it sounded fishy too.  The seller knew exactly what the pony was, a South African Seashell, though he claims it was "found in the attic, in an old toy box."  When most non-collectors sell off old toys, they have no idea what they are beyond maybe the brand name.  So I thought it was strange that this seller knew the pony was from South Africa.

Hmmm, if you want to give the purchase a try and maybe get a South African pony, can you charge it to a credit card?  Didn't I read somewhere that it gives you added protection if the item is not as promised?  Definitely check with your credit card company before trying this though, and definitely proceed with great caution.

Keep in mind, also, that they could send you a fake paypal invoice that is designed to steal your paypal info. I would pass, as tempting as it is. Too many warning bells.

OK I have found the original listing on bidorbuy.

The images have been taken and were used in BOTH of these auctions, the first and this latest one.

I know the person that won the bidorbuy seashell so they are advertising a false auction on ebay.

I was also offered this pony. The seller said that he had offered it to several people to try to sell her and has since sold to the original buyer in the USA who he says now has three of these SA Seashells? Not sure about that but wanted to tell you all he now says SHE IS SOLD so don't go buying her as you won't get her xx

It is all pony manure! The more I read the more I think the behaviour is shocking. I am still inclined to believe there was no pony in the first place.

I have been following this saga, waiting for evidence that the first seller was a scammer (the first one of the two ebay sellers that is). I kept checking back at their feedback and listings to see if anything came up but for a long time there was just no activity at all, no selling, no feedback updates. So they are now no longer registered..? Has it been confirmed that the first and second ebay seller are the same person? I agree the pattern is very suspicious. I wonder if all those porcelein buyers got their items.

That auction was ended early by the seller and the seller is NLARU under that name.

If you read the first page of this thread there are links to the previous thread about that auction and the evidence is listed which proves it's the same pony and the same seller :)

I would like to shed light onto that matter, after a long time of consideration if I would like to make this Public or not. I have won this pony of the original auction on the south african Website and I got her 3 weeks after the auction ended. Everything went good and I was glad because it was a really expensive Pony. I also noticed that somebody else was trying to sell my pony shortly after the original auction and told my seller that somebody else has stolen her photos and is now trying to sell the same pony with her photos. We contacted both Ebay and Bidorbuy on behalf of this matter. There is for sure no pony because this south african Seashell is in my collection in Switzerland and not in the UK and she is not for sale at this point of time. Be aware, this seller is a scammer!

Oh boy, I just saw this thread and I was the winning buyer from, I believe, the auction in question. Needless to say I am now HUGELY concerned  Supposedly the "pony" is in the mail and should be here by end of the week, but from the looks of it my hopes are falling. I will keep you updated on what happens but looks like I'm going to have to start contacting both ebay and paypal shortly

Aniko ~ I had a funny feeling the original pony that was on bidorbuy was the one you own ^.^ Thank you for letting us know you own that pony and that you contacted ebay (along with the seller on bidorbuy) about the pictures.

Keetchino ~ welcome to the arena! Are you able to give us any more details, such as the sellers user name? Is the pony being sent to you via  International tracked and insured? If so do you have the tracking number?

Seller's Ebay name was "Crownparke". Name he communicated with was "Dale [real name removed*]". Tracking number was with Royal Mail #RJ832887249GB. Tried to track and an error message would come up, saying they had not received info yet. Didn't try to think much of it as that had occurred in another transaction but I received the pony just fine. He only communicated through my gmail account, not ebay, and used [email protected], however I just tried to send a message and it stated that the email account no longer existed. Definitely looking like I got scammed. Anyone know how to send ebay a message regarding possible fraudulent activity? It says the pony should be here by Thursday so I don't want to officially report anything till at least then, but I'd like to give them a heads up so they can maybe start looking into it now.

[*we dont allow real names to be posted on the forums even in cases such as this ~ many thanks @ hathorcat]

Thank you for sharing that information

That's the seller!

The service being used is safe, I am glad to hear it is not regular mail! With international sign for it is not tracked, but you do sign for it when it arrives (I think!) RM changed the service not too long ago so I think that is right, I could be getting it mixed up though

I am having everything crossed that it works out for you.

I suggest if it goes wrong go through eBay/Paypal to report them.

I reported this seller to ebay when the thread opened, I said the pony didn't have the pony and was a fraud.  Keetchino at least you have seen this thread, I still can't believe people do this type of stuff

I'm sorry, Keetchino, but I would start the process to get your money back NOW. As soon as they disconnect their bank account from Paypal, Paypal won't have anything to pull your funds back from.

I agree with Jadis, please do open a case on Paypal NOW! The seller doesn't own this pony because it is in my collection. I am so sorry that this happened to you and hope everything Works out well for you.

Tried to open a case with Paypal, it directed me to the Ebay resolution center since it was an Ebay transaction, however it says I can't open a case yet cause the estimated delivery date is Jul. 3rd, and it's "too early". Looks like my hooves are tied for another day

Also, please don't sign for anything that arrives without looking at it first. Who's to say that a different pony may have been packed and shipped to you. Once you've signed for it, it will state as delivered with Paypal and you may have trouble getting a refund then.  Best of Luck!

If you have the ability, also open the package at the postal outlet. They are official government employees and can back up your claim if you open it and it isn't what you were expecting. That's your best bet. Do NOT open it alone or just with a husband/wife/friend. Open it at the postal outletwith the employee watching or at a police station. If it comes out fraudulent, then you won't have far to go to report to the authorities!
