This is such a cool idea!!

I'm super busy at the moment and already have 3 WIP ponies gathering dust somewhere so not sure yet if I have the capacity to participate... Buuuut have added to the polls anyway. Depending on the outcome of the polls I might have a crack - but we should do another one of these later in the year maybe, such a rad concept! Look forward to seeing everyone's customs!

Darkhorse, your ponies and painting skills are absolutely perfect!! Have always adored your work, particularly the eyes!

BlackCurtains, I totally loathe painting eyes!!! Worst part of creating a custom, current WIP ponies have been waiting for new eyes for 6 weeks now lol. I avoid painting where possible and tend to use sculpture instead but no avoiding repainting eyes. I try to keep as much of the original eye on the pony as possible and paint over the existing design, it helps to keep lines and circles in shape though is a pain when wanting to completely change the eye colour. It's definitely a long and painful process...

Eyelashes are the WORST. Especially with the eyebrow contour of the pony to paint, not even a flat surface. And I always seem to end up with one eye looking much better than the other!!! I also go through quite a few tiny paintbrushes with such fine painting, might look at this triple thick technique though.

Truthfully I've seen some weird disaster ponies...I would not recommend baking after all the work is done

What kind of disasters?

Because I'm pleased to report that I've just finished my first custom this way - painted her eyes, re-rooted all hair and styled before sculpting and baking..

I only use small amounts of polymer, thin and delicate pieces so don't leave a pony in the oven for long, this lady was baking at 110°c for about 10 minutes and everything has turned out fine :dance2: The only difference I have noticed is that the hair (nylon Dolly Hair) seems to go a little thin and flat after being exposed to the heat, whether wrapped in aluminium foil or not, but it's not enough to bother me..

Painting!! I'm not fantastic at painting which is probably why I tend to stick to sculpting. Can't avoid painting eyes though. I dread it and always end up with one eye much better than the other. Eyelashes are a nightmare!!

Love putting in new tails though - such a quick thing which completely transforms the look of a pony.

Sunpony - the brand is Sullivans All Purpose acrylic. Nothing fancy, just whatever I've found at craft stores. I'm in Australia and we seem to have limited options compared to the US and Europe.

Kaelynn - I know right, getting the head back on is a nail-biting experience!! For my next custom I'll leave the sculpting until last and see how the hand painted eyes and styled hair hold up in the oven, will seal/varnish after baking. Fingers crossed!

I use Sculpey usually... As mentioned, we don't get spoiled for choice in Australia and I'm usually too lazy to order online

Great question! I've only ever used polymer clay for my customs and have been wondering the same thing for years!

After hiding under a rock for almost 12 months I've finally finished another pony (WOOHOO!) but almost broke everything when trying to re-attach her head after baking the clay on the body. My sculpting seems to be getting more delicate with each project so I'm keen to rehair, paint eyes and THEN sculpt/bake to avoid having to risk destroying everything...

Tested on an old bait pony last night with several colours and different layers of acrylic paint - in oven at 130°c for 15 minutes. Didn't notice any change to the paint, no weird chemical/burning smells, everything seems fine!

Probably wouldn't risk putting a varnished/sealed pony in the oven though...

Holy wow, he is awesome!!   He will find a new home in no time!

What kind of clay did you use for the sculpting?? I can imagine how long the candles took but you did a ripper job, they look unreal! Love the leaves you have sculpted too!

Another pony finished already, what is this sorcery?!

Seriously for someone who procrastinates as much as I do, must be a blue moon or have something to do with half of Australia being in lockdown  but this little Raspberry Pony is finished and ready to go off to her new home!

Wow thanks for all the lovely comments  I forgot how awesome it is to share a finished project and get such nice feedback! You're all so kind!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who drifts in and out of customising ponies! I've got a huge study load this year, as well as full-time work and family commitments, definitely been hard to find the time and motivation to keep customising.. Got a few more ideas though so hopefully I can find the time to knock out a few more ponies before 2022

Just had to Google search G5, didn't realise that Hasbro were up to a new generation already!

I agree with you Eruna, the G5's look awful! They don't even look like ponies anymore... I will definitely be sticking with the G1's but look forward to seeing if any customiser out there can improve the G5 design!

I'm probably one of the slowest customisers ever, has taken me all year to finish these ladies

But they are finally completed!! Sun and Moon ponies, both were originally Retro Releases picked up for cheap at Aldi, they were rehaired with a variety of different shades. Sculpted additions from polymer clay with mica powder, varnished. Eyes were hand-painted, not my best work but being almost 12 months out of practice they will suffice, lol. Need to improve my pony photography skills next!!

Another pony almost finished, soon to be shared... Does anyone else find the waves of pony creativity comes and goes??

Thanks for stopping by! :satisfied:

Mad sculpting skills lovelauraland! Stoked to see someone else using polymer clay with pony customs.

I remember seeing your customs years ago, when I first started, great to see you back at it! Love the painting of the eyes too, little envious of your skills there! I haven't finished a custom so far this year lol  >_<
