Hurricane Milton
« on: October 07, 2024, 10:37:04 AM »
I'm in a mandatory evac zone. The nursing home where my mom is, is moving everyone to Orlando. My cat isn't up to date with her shots, so I don't think the shelter will take her. I'm going to be staying in my apartment. It's risky, but honestly, I would rather put myself in physical harm than leave Aster here alone and leave, not knowing when I can come back and what happened. I've already been under so much stress my hair is falling out, I can't take anymore mental abuse.

Right now the storm is a CAT 5. They think it will weaken to a strong CAT 3 by the time it gets here. Charlie, which hit this area in 2004, was a CAT 4 and a much bigger storm. It didn't cause flooding and it didn't take down a lot of buildings, just damaged windows and roofs.

I am on the second floor so wind will be a bit worse than at ground level. As long as the roof holds, I think I'll be okay.

100% the power will go out, but FPL is pretty good at restoration. The internet, on the other hand... my internet was out for 2 weeks after Ian, which was October of last year.

I'll update as long as I can.

If anyone else is in the path, try to stay safe.

oh no!!  That's terrible.  I know you'll do your best to stay safe, but that's still so scary.   I hope it doesn't hit hard and you just get some rain.

How terrifying! Stay safe. Are you sure they won't allow Aster to a safer place too? Shots are probably the last thing they worry about at the moment?

:yikes: Oh, BC my dear friend, I hope you and Aster survive the storm!  I felt so terrible when I heard about this hurricane on Tuesday's news! These times and weather are crazy! I probably won't be able to sleep for the next few nights thinking about you and Aster!
It's still great to hear that you didn't abandon your cat alone in the eye of the storm. I would do exactly the same in that situation. I will not abandon my beloved pets!

Everyone else who is in the hurricane zone, stay safe too!  :(

(The winds and rains of a hurricane called Kirk will arrive here in Finland on Wednesday during the day. Of course, not with the force of a hurricane anymore, but as a calmer storm that can still cause destruction. Despite the wind, the rainfall is predicted to move very slowly, which means that the risk of flooding has increased in this country as well, especially in the cities. The storm is forecast to last until at least Friday. But I don't think it will affect my life in any way. )

stay safe BC! i can't believe there are so many hurricanes all at once. just a few weeks back there were articles about the hurricane season being slower than forecasted. those people should have kept their mouths shut.

I'm as prepared as I can be.

This is my local news - https://winknews.com/weather/ - I'm located in Punta Gorda in Zone A.

I'm going to copy what I posted on Facebook.

I have learned that the pet shelters don't require papers, but they are all in Port Charlotte on ground level. Port Charlotte is not that far away and is also under a mandatory evac. Storm surge is supposed to be like 9-15 feet because it will be high tide when the storm pushes on land. I would rather take my chances here on the second floor with Aster not trapped in a carrier with no escape. Even if the building goes, she might still make it. So... we are staying. It's supposed to be a CAT 4 at landfall now. Charlie was a CAT 4 and still much larger. It was devastating, sure, but it didn't like, obliterate buildings. My parents house was fine but one broken window. This building has a metal panel roof, so that's good. There is only one large palm tree that could potentially fall on my bedroom depending on the wind. We are starting to get the outer bands right now.

I think I'm alone in this building (there are 4 units) but there are plenty of cars in the parking lot so I'm not the only who stayed. This complex is huge too, so I'm sure there will be other people here.

My mom is in Orlando.

I'm making the bathroom my fort. There's no window there and it's in the middle of the apartment up against the center of the building. Aster will probably hide under the bed.

Last I heard, my area will start getting hurricane force winds around 4:30 this afternoon with the center of the storm making landfall around midnight.

I'm feeling quite unwell. Headache, very nauseous. Chest hurts.

I'm going to cook some noodles and hard boil my eggs and enjoy the AC and Hulu while I still can.

I was just reading about this on the BBC and it looks pretty scary, wishing all Florida pony friends the best and hopefully it won't hit as badly as being predicted.

Stay safe everyone
