What happened to hair?? Missing! Expensive! Where to buy?
« on: June 24, 2024, 10:15:02 PM »
Because I'll soon be starting a big and fun project...I was getting excited.
I need several different colors and then a whole bunch of purple. But, I realized I needed more hair for it, but not just 1 bag, like maybe 4 or 5 of the same color, so I started shopping and started shocking! What's the state of hair today?

Dollyhair is missing some colors now...
Ultra Violet, regular bubblegum, (they're vanished, not marked as 'sold out', which is worrisome)

Then Shimmerlocks doesn't seem to sell pony sizes of hair even though they started out as a pony hair website, what's up with that? You can buy the doll size of things (bigger) but it's double the price. I mean, its ok to get twice as much for twice the price but I can't order like 20 hanks of different colors at that higher rate, its too expensive to get variety.

HQG1C hair-
This is the BEST price but they don't have all the classic colors.

Etsy-
All these guys seem to be from not the USA with huge shipping fees? It's fab for people in the UK, or Australia and Europe ordering, I'm sure their prices are fine for the people there...but again 20 bucks just to ship I'm kind of 'nah'?

Amazon only has like kanekalon and wigs
Temu/Ali Express- Will it even arrive at your house? Who knows! Certainly not them.

I want to have my customs at reasonable prices and be able to do what people request (color wise) having a big 'pallet' of hair choices on hand is very important so I can pick up and go with any design. I hadn't had to buy hair in a while, going on HQHair and dyeing it to colors and using old stock from a bunch of different shops, but what is everyone doing these days to buy hair reasonably?

That's interesting about Shimmerlocks. They still have hanks for $4-something. Organize by price low to high and they'll come up. Not too many though. I'm not happy about this change either

There is The Doll Planet but their hanks are $8.

Restore Doll has good prices but I don't know how good the hair is. They have "premium nylon" which is what I would get.

Doll Hair Emporium is UK based but they ship worldwide and have exact matches for ponies.

IIRC, Dollyhair's Bubblegum color didn't turn out as an exact match to the intended vintage ponies or to a previous batch or something like that, so the "Old Bubblegum" color was supposed to fix that (be the original color, or match the vintage ponies).  I am wondering if Bubblegum is not being restocked for that reason.  Of course, DH has always been slow restocking colors; I imagine the owner has to be able to order a wholesale-sized batch of hair to get it from the overseas supplier and waits until multiple colors need restocking.

I don't know anything about DH since the previous owner passed and someone else took over ownership.  Are orders any more reliable these days?

Yes, I've ordered from Dollyhair several times in the last couple of years and things have always arrived promptly and perfect.

We do apologize but we are phasing out the half ounce pack size and we can promise this decision was not made lightly. Our commitment has always been shipping orders within 2 business days or less, however as the years have gone on, spinning and packing hundreds of hanks of hair each day has led to multiple repetitive strain injuries.

We tried to get around this by having our spinning equipment completely overhauled and redesigned, which did work for awhile.  However it takes us the same amount of time to spin and package a half ounce pack as it does to spin a 1oz pack.  We did try hiring extra help. However, there's a lot of care and attention to detail that goes into this work. (Selling hair is a lifestyle, not a hobby XD) People who aren't personally invested the way our family members are just don't seem to care, which ended up leading to a lot more work for us in the long run.

I'm a night owl by nature and didn't mind working late into the night to get orders done.  You may remember we took some time off unexpectedly at the beginning of this year.  That was due to some unusual health issues that were eventually attributed to sleep deprivation.  My doctors were quite firm that I could not continue how I was going without long term health consequences.

We've spoken with Ida at Dollyhair and she's always been very kind to us. We've always said there's plenty of room in doll hair for everyone and we are happy to know Ida will be able to provide services for people who are no longer able to buy from us.

We know our decision will not work for everyone and we understand. We never want anyone to feel pressured or obligated to buy from us for any reason.  Again, we do apologize and only ask for understanding of our position and circumstances as we understand yours.

Best regards,
Melissa

Thanks for posting

It's perfectly understandable :) I will still buy from Shimmerlocks. I'll just have to be more picky with what colors I need at the time. We love your site
