Metallic paint & Sealer choices
« on: July 15, 2012, 06:04:06 AM »
I  have a pony done with corset and shoes done in metallic paints. You can't really tell based on the picture, which is rather annoying.

I'm just wondering what might be the best choice to seal this with to preserve and enhance the shine. Darkhorse had mentioned sealing symbols and metallics in general with triple thick before.. But Im worried that the space is too big. I have had Triple Thick go cloudy on eyes, and I would be worried that too much brushing it as I apply it would make it cloudy on the body.

Thoughts? Opinions? Should I just go for it with the Triple Thick?

oh so glad you are asking this!   I'm doing something "sparkly" and of course not wanting to seal with my usual mod podge, so I have the same question!  I think triple thick is fine is thin/one layer, same goes with dullcote - although I have found like you that several layers go cloudy over time.  But I have used triple thick as just a single layer and I like the shine, hoping it won't go sticky/collect dust over time = we'll see...

There was a MH board I stumbled across mentioned a "Mr. Super Clear" ?? so not sure if that may be something to try = anyone from the Monster High club to chime in?  I was planning on trekking to Michael's later today to see if they make a sealer to enhance the shine/sparkle so I'll update if I find anything

Oh = lovely work so far!  I like that texture treatment on the corset :-) now wondering if that's a gonna be a unicorn ?

Love that lavender colour!

I'm guessing since you're talking about only sealing pieces of the whole pony, you're looking for a brush-on? Mr. Superclear (at least the one I've run across) is a spray, so you'd have to mask the areas you didn't want sealed if you go that route. The only trouble with Mr. Superclear is actually getting your HANDS on it. :/

As far as brush ons go, I like liquitex gloss varnish. Because its a gloss, it definitely highlights things and would help your metallics pop. :)

@Maycrestmom: Yes, the pony will be a unicorn :) I think I'll just try the Triple thick and pray. In one thin coat I think you may be right, and it will be OK. The texture on the corset was so fine, I was afraid the paint would cover it up, but it worked out nice. I just pressed some tule into it. The blue I actually did in three shades, one matte, metallic and pearl in a mottled way to give it more of a snakeskin look. Up close, it's subtle but noticeable. In photos.. not so much lol.

@Thewormwood:  I don't mind if I have to spray the entire pony if it means I don't lose her sparkle. Liquitex gloss Varnish and I do NOT get along. I bought a bottle when I was beginning customizing and it dried sticky every time I used it. And thanks! The lavender, believe it or not, is a Folk Art metallic. I hear lots of bad things about Folk Art, but I have never had any issues with the metallic colors.
