Pony Corral / Re: Could g5 be the potential downfall of mlp?
« on: September 10, 2024, 03:01:37 AM »
I think girls are aging out of IRL toys sooner nowadays.  I think thats why retailers don’t stock MLP hardly any more.  (Collectors don’t count because we are a small portion of their current toyline market).

I’m guessing that 7 or 8 is oldest age asking for toys these days.. Maybe even younger? Whereas in the 80s i think girls played with toys up until 12yo maybe.

By the time shes 9 shes got an ipad or tablet.

In addition to retailers, Hasbro knows this I think thats why theyre trying so hard to be a media company.

i can remember being 9 in about 04/05 while g3 was running and already being bullied for "being a baby" re: my interest in toys. like, i had the self awareness to say "we're kids. kids play with toys. i'm not hurting anybody by liking plastic horses as a NINE YEAR OLD" but. yeah i reckon its getting worse with each generation.

i've already been restoring g3s for a good few years (are they as old to everyone now as g1s were to me when i started collecting as a kid? sheesh. time to go have an existential crisis) so if yall are trying to organize and get more information up for them specifically, especially dollyhair colours, i'd be happy to help out!

others have already covered big points like misogyny and older toys not even being safe for kids because of chemicals/lead paint/etc, and keeping plastic out of landfills, so i'll just add:

1. big difference between a grown man suddenly developing an interest in a little girls' series/toy and then making it all about them (you all know very well what i'm talking about), which only started happening around 2011, and the vast majority of collectors before that, who were mainly women who simply held onto their own childhood belongings and simply sustained an interest their whole lives, and often went on to share it with their young relatives.

2. my dad always taught me the value of "cheap entertainment". basically, the world can be positively miserable a good portion of the time, and anything that brings a little sunshine into your day is worth the investment, especially when you get a good deal. take a new pony. that's $5 usd. even if the time i spend cleaning it up, styling its hair, arranging her nicely on a shelf, and snapping a few pics for social media only adds up to an hour, that was still less than minimum wage, to pay myself in happiness. same goes for movies, $10 or so is a good deal for 2-3 hours of entertainment, or a videogame being $80 for 100+ hours of fun and joy? thats an amazing deal. materialism isn't good for us either, but there is value to be found in these things when we pay ourselves first, including in matters of happiness.

people have also been telling me i'm "too old" and "weird" for collecting ponies since i was (checks notes) nine years old. i couldn't bring myself to care then, so i certainly don't care now at the ripe age of 28

edit: also, if they're so pressed about "taking away from the kids boohoo", maybe they should pony up (lol) and donate some toys to kids in need? these are mass produced items babe

Yeah, but with clothes there's also the question of fashion.  Most people are not going to wear bell bottoms from the 70s, the wide-shouldered women's power suits of the 80s, or the godawful fashions of the early 2000s in the modern day regardless of how well the clothing are made in a technical sense.  Make them of natural fibers and let them decay, I don't want to look at them lol.

i am! i'm going to wear bell bottoms and 80s shoulder pads. i love that stuff. if they lasted this long give them to me

And that's just looking at it from a personal viewpoint. We NEED things to last, be collected & collectable, be able to be passed down to the next generation, to be easily fixable, for the simple reason the longer a toy is being loved, the more we get out of it AND the less likely it ends up being trashed. And the LAST thing the environment needs is stuff being trashed!!!

this reminds me of the similar argument for clothes tbh. like, natural materials are great and renewable, but a lot of them just don't last very well, so it's about finding a balance with synthetic fibres which, yes, they're overglorified plastic, but you only have to create the emissions of making them once, and they very well may last several decades/generations. i think it's the same for toys. plastic isn't as terrible and evil as people say if they're being made to last (ie look how well g2s are still doing!), but they're just not anymore

.Hasbro is never good at My Little Pony from day one. They never respect little girls enough to put in meaningful effort. The toys keep getting worse.

this response really speaks to me, honestly. we're seeing proper studies now on how  crucial imaginative play is for children's healthy brain development. the shift from lovingly made, high quality toys/dolls that can easily last 2-3 generations to highly disposable garbage because kids handed an ipad from birth just don't have the attention span to play with a toy for more than a few weeks has just become this absolutely vicious cycle of a self fulfilling prophecy. like duh, with this new awful stringy hair and accessories that snap just getting them out of the box? i wouldn't have wanted to play with that as a kid either! heck, i barely want anything to do with it as an adult who knows how to restore/repair toys now

i had better as a kid which is why i want better for future generations too! this "trend" of horrible quality toys is quite literally giving kids brain damage.

sorry to absolutely go off lol i feel very strongly about this

I decided on just two of them. Milkyway and Aurora. I don't know why amazon has Polaris $10 more than that other three.

I was frustrated by this too, and I think it must have been a typo that slipped through? There's no reason why she should be more expensive. I actually submitted a "report incorrect product information" form (it's under the product info in the listing) - I selected "I have an issue with the price" and then chose "other" which gives you a slot to write in and tell them you think they made a mistake. Maybe if a bunch of people do this, they might fix the price issue?

it could be that the original item is already out of stock, so we're seeing reseller listings? it happens on the walmart website as well. it might sort itself out if/when they restock and the original listing will be back up for the original retail price

Pony Corral / how are we classifying/labelling the basic fun ponies?
« on: September 07, 2023, 05:03:20 PM »
especially now with the celestials being released so it's not just necessarily just reproduction/rereleases anymore. are they still true g1s, like should start referring to 2023 as "year 11"? are they technically g4-5s because of the years of release? or are we just going to have a totally separate abbreviation like BF? i'm curious to hear some thoughts!

no problem, cowboyopossum!

my other 2 celestials arrived today <3 they seem to have a different stripe pattern with a lot more sort of incomplete stripes? not sure if that's just mine or if aurora/milkyway are made a little differently with their own pattern variants but i absolutely adore how 80s it looks

aurora is totally the shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger that freddie mercury told us about

milkyway's hair is also slightly rougher/drier than the rest so i wonder if there's been an adjustment to this shade of pink hair so it won't rot so quickly?
