Limiting your collection?
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:05:28 AM »
There are so many different ponies and generations that I am trying to limit my collection. I really love G1s so that part is easy for me. The problem is that there are soo many G1s! :whoa:
I was only collecting ones with food symbols for a while and am trying to stick to that but sometimes I give in. I love nirvanas and mail orders too! So I'm wondering for those that limit their collection, how did you decide and how do you stick to your decision? :what:

I tried limiting just G1s, then just G1s and a handful of G3s, then more G3s snuck in, then some G2s snuck in then those G4s snuck in too.

So no helpful ideas at all, sorry... :lmao:

Well, my personal collection is limited!  I really only collect wingers, but lately I've gotten into collecting Breezies and Flutters.  Maybe it's the wing thing;)

Limit? No G4 Playsets perhaps. No G3-G4 stuffed or so soft ponies. No spending over $20 for a single plastic pony so some don't get to be in my collection unless I luck out like when I found Mimic for $1.50.

Some of my limits:

- No G4 playsets especially of mane 6
- G3 sticking to blue, purple, or green ponies (mostly)
- Staying away from G1 (for now)
- Styling ponies or mini ponies (bb, dollymix) are okay
- No Mc Donald's ponies
-$20 for single pony

eta: no plushies! and of course lack of funds is the ultimate limit!

Hmmm....I maybe am not one to give advice on limiting as the possibility of restricting my collection is long in the distant past.

But one of my friend has a great idea...she collects only 1 or 2 from each set....her "favourite" from each set so that she has a representative of each set without having a massive collection. I really like that idea...as lets face it for most of us I would imagine there are very few sets where we love every single pony from that set...so you would get a varied collection just with your favourite ponies!
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

- Nothing over $20.00 unless it's a pony I've wanted for years (i.e. Night Glider, Mountain Boys, Brothers, etc)
- Not buying every G4 just because (sorry Feathermay!)
- No playsets - G1 or else
- No G4 plushes (unless they're commissioned!)
- No collecting just to...collect. I might pick it up if I find it cheap while thrifting, but I'll probably sell it to a collector.
- No trying to complete sets - only get the ones I like from certain sets.

I focus on ponywear because it's small, easy to store, and makes my collection varied.  I also don't do accessories, except for Princess ones.

I try to collect a lot of ponies with star-themed symbols, but I really ask myself if I want that one in my collection.

Limit?  What is this limit you speak of?  O_o  The only limit I have is funds, though admittedly, it's a fantastic limiter.  lol

I have to limit my collection because all the ponies I want are expensive...So I have to save for them instead of buying a lot of other ponies. XD
That's pretty much the only limiting I do. Oh and trying not to break my bank account. That's always a limit. :P

My adult collection is limited to the amount of "pony real estate" that I have on my shelves. If I can't display it then I don't really have a reason to own it. I'm basically about to hit that limit and it's making me rethink all my duplicates and less favorite G4s. Not 100% sure what I'll do, but a few may start popping up on my sales page or be sacrificed as custom bait.

This doesn't include my childhood G1 collection, most of which are packed up in boxes in my closet. I don't have the heart to get rid of them or turn them into customs ^^ Occasionally I'll send one that I'm less emotionally bonded to off to a happy home where I know (hope) it will be cherished for at least a while.
Thanks to Calico Star for my siggy! <3 (deleted cause photobucket)

I only collect G1's and G4's. No duplicates allowed! And my G1 collection is 90% babies which are small and don't take up much space.  And the G4's are small to so that helps.

Edit~I also collect wingers too which are also small. Can't believe I left them out!!

Funds is a definite limiter for me, too, as is space.  I only collect ponies I like and I go through my pony shelves every so often to see if there's any that I never grew attached to.
