Title: Candles
Post by: BlackCurtains on March 26, 2023, 11:10:01 AM
Anyone else addicted to candles?

I used to collect fancy candles, the kind you don't burn. I had dragons and tigers and elephants. Most survived the trip to Florida, but one of my dragons melted a bit from the heat.

As far as burning candles go, I love Yankee Candle but they are so expensive! I have little ones and one my sister bought for me that's a Woodwick, which crackles like real fire wood as it burns.

I like the Walmart Mainstays candles. They're okay. They have nice scents and while burning they fill the room, but it doesn't stick around much after the candle goes out. They burn fast too.

Air Wick candles are okay. The scents are very strong but like the Walmart candles, it doesn't hang around.

Recently I tried Goose Creek. They were having a sale on their large jar candles for $10 each. I bought five of them based on the scent descriptions. I did a good job because they all smell great :P The one I'm burning now has made my entire apartment smell. It's called Shining Sands and smells like a day at the beach. I recommend them!

Not big on scented candles, but they're always something I have around in an all-electric home

Meee! I have an IG page that is mostly dedicated to candles!
(I don’t know if we’re allowed to post our socials here. If we are, I can share it if anyone would like to see some of my collex.)

I mainly shop the deals at Bath & Body Works, but I buy others from time to time (such as DW Home, Mainstays, Aldi, Yankee, Tuscany, Fvith). I haven’t tried Goose Creek yet, but I’ve been thinking about it.

Normally I like fruity, floral, and gourmand scents, but I will dabble in others.  :satisfied:

Oh, I’m 100% a candle addict haha! My favorite scents to be fall scents, so I stock up a bunch that time of year and try to make them last year round. Usually around May/ June I start running low though. There are unfortunately only so many candles I can store at once.

Bath and Body works is usually my go to for candles, though I refuse to buy them at full price since they are so expensive! I usually try and wait until they are having a buy 3 get 3 free sale and when I have a 20% off coupon to stock up. I like Yankee candles as well, but same thing, they are so pricey with no coupons or sales!

I’ve also become a big fan of jewelry candles like Fragrant Jewels and Jackpot Candles. Once again they are a little expensive…but each candle comes with a ring inside so they are fun to burn for that! The rings are pretty too. They aren’t very good quality, they do tarnish after a while, but for like $30 it’s a fun splurge here and there!

My favorite cheap candles are Tuscany candles from Kroger or whatever it may be called by you. :P They are large glass jars like Yankee and they have a pretty strong scent. They also burn for an insanely long time, so I love them for that!

I don't think I ever had any Bath and Body Works candles... they went out of business by me. They were in the mall and the mall is dead.

So the Goose Creek candle made my apartment smell beachy for two days after burning it! I think I have a new favorite :inlove:

My favorite scents are woody and spicy, fall and winter and FIRE. I think it's Yankee that has one called Fireside and it smells SO GOOD.

I love candles too. :lovey:

I buy them from Bath and Body Works, but I try to wait for a good sale on them because I don't want to pay the full retail price.

I have so many now, that I need to use some up before I buy more as I've crammed candles in just about every space where they will fit.  Most of the time I try to burn them on the weekends, but I haven't done that for a while.

I have a lot more than what's in the pics, but these were the most recent pics I found of the candles.  Pics is spoiler tags.

I've heard good things about Goose Creek and Yankee Candle, but I haven't tried them yet.

When I visited Hawaii, I bought my mom a candle that looks like a pineapple.

I love candles  Unfortunaly one of my cats love them too and almost burnt of his whiskers a few years ago, so I mostly use battery candles nowadays which is totally not the same. I have a lantern on the table in the livingroom where I can put a real candle as he can't reach it there.

I use candles mostly during fall season. My favorite is a vanilla scented one from IKEA. They also had a limited special on a cherry candle which was lovley that I still have some of, and a few years ago their christmas edition was winter apple that I adore. I only have one of those left so I just sniff it once in a while. HM Home has a candle with sandlewood that smells wonderful.

Mousie once set her tail on fire from a candle and she didn't even notice. Luckily, I did and put it out with my hand. I didn't use candles a lot when she was alive because of that incident. Now I have a cat proof place to put the candle and Aster doesn't care  anyway but she was smelling my candle stash earlier and it made her sneeze

I love scented candles and wax! I try to get Yankee Candles from Big Lots rather than online, because yeah...it can be expensive! I splurge for Frostbeard Candles every year too--the throw and staying power of them is a lot better than even the biggest Yankee/similar brand candles!  Frostbeard Studio  (https://www.frostbeardstudio.com/) I also get candles off of Etsy and support other indie creatives that way! :)

I'm big on them! My favourite used to be Yankee's Pink Dragonfruit, but they discontinued it  My next fav is Sweet Plum Sakura, but looks like that might be discontinued too! My friend once got me a strawberry and coconut artisan one that was AMAZING, and the wax was so creamy! I burned it out and I so miss it!

Bumping this up to post that Amazon has some Woodwick candles (https://www.amazon.com/WoodWick-Hourglass-Candle-Sagewood-Seagrass/dp/B0BJQQ2B2T/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=woodwick+candles&qid=1690731889&sprefix=woodwick%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-5) that are much cheaper than the ones from the Yankee Candle website. Yankee sells them for $31 but Amazon has the large ones at $23.

Goose Creek is also having a clearance sale and a sale on their single wicks.

I just dropped $85 on new candles from Goose Creek :freak: They were all on sale plus I had a 20% off coupon. I got 12 candles! Mostly big three wick but there are a couple single wick. I don't know where I'm going to put them ^^;

Only one I've had before and really loved it. It's the one that made my place smell like the beach! I got some similar scents and a lot of fall/winter scents and some "candles for men" with spicy scents that I love.

edit: They arrived today! My haul.

I like them all. I'm burning Suit & Tie right now. They didn't have large versions of the "man" candles. It smells really good! Spicy.

nice haul BC!

i love candles! especially when it's cold and dark outside. curling up under a blanket and watching TV is the best. it's been so hot this summer I haven't lit any candles lately. i just occasionally smell them.

2 years ago I said i was done with Bath and Body Works candles. but now that cooler weather is around the corner i'm tempted. i like the fall pumpkin scents and i used to buy enough to last through Jan. when they had good sales. i would wait until they dropped to ~$10 per candle. but last time i ordered them the quality just didn't seem to be the same. the glass was thinner and they didn't burn well. also the price was higher.

i think i'll check out Goose Creek and see what they have for fall.

Woodwicks / crackling wicks are so neat; I love the ambiance they provide!

The little debbie candles seem so gimmicky to me. They’re one of those things I’d have to smell in person to see if anything entices me, but that’s not an option.

I did blind buy Radiant Red Maple from B&BW because there is a lot of hype around it. Now I’m waiting for it to arrive. I know that if it’s not for me, returns are easy.

I recently picked up a couple Homeworx 4-wick candles at TJ Maxx (Peanut Butter & Raspberry Jam and Possessed Plum from their Halloween line), so I look forward to burning those.

Online, but I normally go in store. I just don’t have the time to, but I have 3 within 12 miles of me, so returns are easy when I do have time.

Just as a heads up if anyone is interested… Right now their candles are $12.95. And if you poke around the website for a few minutes, I usually get this pop-up to save 20% on top!:

Shipping is $6.99 though (or there’s Buy Online Pick-up In Store if you have a B&BW in your vicinity).

I love Leaves from BBW and also enjoy Sugared Snickerdoodle Caramel Pumpkin Swirl and Blueberry Maple Pancakes.   There's others I like too, but I was trying to just think of the fall scents.  I think Salted Butterscotch is available all of the time and not considered a fall scent.   I also have Pumpkin Cinnamon Bun, but I haven't burnt that one yet.

Leaves was one of the hand soaps I got :D I considered getting it in a candle too, but I don't want to go too overboard in case I don't like them.

My Woodwick Fireside came today :hearts: I do think this is my all time favorite candle. The first one I ever got was a small tealight candle from my sister. She had gotten me a little winter gift box of tealights from Yankee.

I finally placed an order with Goose Creek, Im excited to try their candles! :) That sale over the weekend was way too good to pass up! Then B&BW was having a buy one get one sale and I had a 20% off coupon, so I did a bit of candle shopping there too. I’ve got quite a collection coming!

I’m really disappointed with an order I placed a month or so back with Charmed Aroma. They have jewelry in their candles so they tend to be on the expensive side, but they have some really cute seasonal stuff and collabs with Disney that I like. They had a pretty good sale so I bought a couple candles, but one arrived broken! No big deal, I had this happen with a birthday gift I got from them once and they replaced it with no hassle. They did that again this time, but my replacement was broken too! They sent me another replacement that arrived that is one piece, but the jar still has cracks in it! I’m too tired to keep fighting it at this point, but for how expensive their candles are I REALLY wish they’d ship with more care. Between this debacle and the birthday candle that’s three candles I’ve gotten from them that are broken upon arrival. I think I’ll be hesitant to order from them again in the future.

I got a Goose Creek candle to try when I saw them at Walmart in the Christmas section! It’s called Winter Splendor. I think it’s a dupe to B&BW’s Winter. Their Strawberry Sponge Cake is definitely a dupe of B&BW’s Strawberry Pound Cake. I almost bought This Is Christmas (which I believe is another dupe of possibly Tree Farm or The Perfect Christmas, but I own a couple TPC’s already.) Classic Christmas Tree was like Fresh Balsam or Tree farm. White Christmas Cake was like too buttery or waxy or something for my liking. Anyway, I hope I see more GC scents roll out to Walmart! I like to sniff before I buy.

I've gotten some more Yankee jar candles from Amazon, they're only $15 compared with Yankee's $35 or whatever they are. One of them was a scent I was after for a while, Lavender and Oak. It smells great but it doesn't spread around the room very much. Not like Goose Creek or Bath and Body Works.

I placed another Goose Creek order with mostly winter themed candles. B&BW is going to have a super special sale for one day starting tomorrow. I'm assuming candles will be part of the sale (it didn't say in the email). So check it out and see what's up.

Tomorrow is the start of Candle Day at Bath & Body Works. AKA their big candle sales event. Candles are rumored to be $9.95 this year. Stack on coupons and exclusive releases, and it becomes a big to-do. I’ve been participating in their Candle Day event each year since 2016. This year they’re marketing it as rewards members (people who joined their app) having “Early access” to the sale online and in store tomorrow, and then “everyone” can shop it on Saturday and Sunday. I’m doubting they’ll actually turn away sales from non-members in store tomorrow, but that’s my personal opinion. It just wouldn’t make business $en$e. In my area, stores have been known to open as early as 4am for the event; however I checked online, and they’re starting at 6am in my area tomorrow. As for online sales… Good luck. It’s notoriously bananas with people getting in a tizzy about not being able to place orders, carts being emptied, and after the fact orders being cancelled, lost, and/or delayed. That being said, I HAVE placed an online order on Candle Day with success in the past. I’m just relaying what I’ve heard from other members of the candle community. I *think* that’s why they’re advertising this “Early access” sale: to try to slow down the masses and not create as much fallout. I personally go in store to avoid that whole online headache, but I understand it’s not an option for everyone! Proximity to stores, physical demand of holding crates of candles while you stand in line, and crowds are all factors.

Then probably the week after that, they’ll have Body Care Day(s)!  :lookround: That’s a newer event. Yay, capitalism!

It's Candle Day weekend at BBW. :D  I really hope we get confirmation on the price soon.  I still have a lot of candles I need to use, but I'm hoping to get at least a couple of them.

One year I felt like the employees looked down at me a little because I wasn't buying as many candles as the people around me were. I think it was just about 4 or 5 when some people were buying 12 or more.

The price is $9.95 for each candle. :D  I'm a little confused by the early shopping in store for Rewards members.  The email says you can either sign in to the app and show your barcode or give your phone number at checkout, but on Facebook they say that you have to be signed in to the app and show your reward barcode.  Whenever there's a big sale, the app always has problems so I'm thinking about maybe skipping Friday and just shopping on Saturday instead so I won't have to deal with the app even though I have it.

It's normally super bombarded, but Candle Day at B&BW has been so chill this year!! Normally I stand in a long line of like 50+ people before the doors open. Today I parked 2 minutes before the doors opened and it was only me & 2 other ladies. Hahaha, so nice. And no one had to show membership as I suspected.

I suspect they have a virtual line to build up more hype. it could be a server capacity thing i suppose. maybe they can't handle too many orders at once?
Title: Re: Candles
Post by: Ponyfan on December 01, 2023, 03:22:33 PM
The servers always get overloaded on Candle Day.  There's been a lot of complaints on Facebook about the website not letting people check out, the app not working etc...   I know I might miss out on some candles because  I didn't go on the first day, but I feel that's better than forcing people to use the app.  I heard that some stores were letting people just use their phone number for the Rewards membership, which is fine, but I didn't want to take any chances with an app that's buggy when there's a big sale.

Edit:  I went today and there was still a large variety to choose from. The store was a little busy, but there was plenty of room to walk around and shop.  Sometimes you had to wait for another person to finish looking at the candles before you got a chance to look at the same ones they were looking at.  They were also giving away the free canvas tote bags at the entrance with the candle crates already inside.

Those are some nice candles BC ^.^.

I accidently bought a christmas candle yesterday :lookround:. I didn't mean to but it was there, within reach. There was no branding on it. The fragrance is called Sparkling Delight and contains orange, lime and sparkling citrus.. I don't think the cats will like my room very much, lol.

Rigth now I'm burning Störtskön (kind of like super nice/cosy) from IKEA. It's blueberry and lingonberry scented. It's their christmas fragrance of the year but for me it's more like autumn.

I had bought a large jar Yankee candle, lavender and oak. It smells fantastic, but it doesn't throw very much. Not compared to the B&BW and Goose Creek candles. I know Yankee is paraffin wax and the others are soy. Maybe that's the difference. The Woodwick candles seem fine, I have two and they throw very well. But I think Yankee is way overpriced. I'm glad I bought the ones I have, and I've got three more coming from their Candle Day sale, but I don't think I'll buy any more after this.

those scents sound yummy Beldarna. i really like citrus candles. i like most candle scents TBH except the ones that smell too much like baked goods. and then it's because they make me hungry

Yeah the Yankee Candles are pretty overpriced. I would expect the throw to be better for what they charge. the smell from the Goose Creek and BBW candles lingers even after i put them out. and soy is supposed to be safer than paraffin wax. so at least 2 strikes for Yankee. though in fairness to Yankee I've had a couple of the BBW with poor throws too.

Burning Ivory Pumpkin now, one of my favs  I also got three Yankee Candles on clearance this morning :)

BC, Wow! Those are wonderful looking and certainly delicious smelling candles! :lovey:

Here, the media only warns about the harm of these, especially candles containing essential oils.. but I still burn candles, especially scented ones! :poke: Common sense helps here too!
Hardly anyone burns dozens of candles at home at the same time, unless there is some ritual/worship going on! visitors can't see pics , please register or login
:worshippy: visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 :snicker:

The only thing I was a little worried about in the news is this information, but in this case too it refers to frequent use (so this matter concerns essential oils):

" Cats in particular are sensitive to many commonly used essential oils such as citrus oils, cinnamon, peppermint, tea tree and eucalyptus. As a result of continuous (long-term and repeated) exposure to the scent, the cat may become ill. Dogs (especially small breeds) are also sensitive to scents - strong scents can also irritate a pet's sensitive sense of smell. "

" While essential oils are therapeutic for the human body and mind, animals with significantly more sensitive senses than us may suffer from their use. Excessive exposure to scents can cause, for example, vomiting or breathing difficulties in animals. "

At least my cats haven't shown any symptoms. :) Not all cats are the same, not all of them necessarily get any symptoms. You'll only find out by trying.

I recently bought Christmas scented candles: gingerbread and I think the other one is cinnamon and apple.
And I bought Yankee's Twinkling Lights three-candle package as a gift for my brother and his spouse (I got it for 5 euros when the normal price was 10 euros). ^.^

Yes, small animals and birds are also very sensitive to essential oils. I bought some scented plug-ins from Bath & Body Works when they were $2 each. I want to use them in the bedroom (I don't typically burn candles in there) but I'm waiting until a day I'll be working in there to use one, so I can keep an eye on Aster. She isn't bothered by the Febreze ones.

You can actually use peppermint essential oils to keep mice away, it doesn't hurt them but they don't like the smell. It also works for insects. I use a couple drops in my kitchen drawers every few months. I saw a roach in my utensil drawer once when I first moved in  but haven't seen any since.

I only light the scented candles in my ponyroom/office as I already have scented ponies here and figue it doesn't make a difference. The cats are not in here much anyway, only a few minutes after I open the door to inspect. Majsan likes to sleep by the radiator behind a shelf and the candle is on the desk so I don't think she get much of it. Ninja is liking the flames a little too much and almost burnt his whisters as a kitten so I only use battery candles elsewhere in the home.

BC, Thank you for the tip on using peppermint essential oil!  :ohyeah: I could put it in the small side attics upstairs and in the linen closet, because I have found and saved small mice in them this spring (or maybe they were rat babies!) Maybe then they wouldn't appear there again next spring. Also in the basement I could put it so I wouldn't have to use traps because I wouldn't want to kill them.

Beldarna, our cats also like the flames of the candles too much! Especially Ozzy. That's why most of our candles are battery-powered. If I burn the right candle in the living room, I'm always there to watch over it. In the bedroom, I can burn candles in peace, because the cats don't have access there, except sometimes I let them in there for a visit, but then no candles. :)

Mousie once set her tail on fire when she walked by a candle on my nightstand. Luckily, I was sitting right there and put it out with my hand. After that I didn't burn candles anymore. But Aster doesn't jump on furniture and shows no interest in the candles, so I feel better about burning them. I only ever have one lit on my desk. If I go in the bedroom I'm only there for a minute. I don't leave candles burning when I'm not present.

I took a quick look through this thread and don't think we've discussed our favorite winter/Christmas scents much.

Mine from BBW are Winter. Twisted Peppermint, Cinamon Stick (That might be a Fall scent though.) Merry Cookie, Merry Mimosa, Tipsy Elf and Champagne Toast.  My mom bought a couple of The Perfect Christmas and Tis the Season, but I haven't burned those yet.

Speaking of throws, the French Baguette candles I got a couple of years ago don't have much of one.  It smells amazing if you're close by though.

I've only burned This is Christmas from Goose Creek so far, it's really nice! I also love just from sniffing them, The Snuggle is Real, Classic Christmas Tree and Campfire Nights (maybe more of a fall scent?). From B&BW I like Flannel, Fresh Balsam, Woodlands, Winter and Sweater Weather. I got those in the Wallflower oils.

My favorite Christmas/winter scents from B&BW are Peppermint Sugar Cookie, The Perfect Christmas, and Crushed Candy Cane. Twisted Peppermint was an unexpected surprise in body care form. It feels so refreshing!

I forgot about Crushed Candy Cane.  That one is really nice too.

A friend gave me Twisted Peppermint body scrub one year.  It smelled great and I loved it, but after about a month of using it, my skin started turning red.  :tub:

I used the Twisted Peppermint lotion and didn’t have a problem. I’ve used some of their other scrubs ~twice a week with no issue, but not Twisted Peppermint. My husband is sensitive to their shower gels though, so I’m not surprised.

At the end of every year, I put together a list of my top ten candles (that are new scents to me for that year). I’ve started pondering my 2023 list this morning.  :wonder:

It does! Amber and Wool smells great too. The throw on these signature candles is much better than the jar candles. The wax seems to be smoother too.

Did anyone order from BBW online during the Candle Day sale?  There's been a lot of complaints on Facebook that people that ordered as soon as ordering opened up at 6 am had their orders cancelled yesterday.

that was the one i was most curious about. i like Amber scents a lot. i have one that smells a bit like the incense from midnight mass on Christmas Eve and i want more candles with that smell. the one i have that most captures that scent is limited edition discontinued and i don't want to burn it.

It has kind of a fresh linen scent mixed with the warm amber scent. It's nice :)

I thought the church burned frankincense and myrrh? Not that I remember, been a long time since I was in one.
Title: Re: Candles

i did some quick searches and it is frankincense and myrrh. apparently the blend can vary somewhat depending on what the church uses. frankincense and myrrh are tree resins. it looks like amber scents can contain benzoin which is a type of myrrh. maybe that's why that candle reminds me of midnight mass. it has kind of a smokey but sweet smell. i had a myrrh candle once and didn't really care for it.

i haven't been to church is years either. i only go if there's a wedding or a funeral. but that smell from the special holiday masses is still nostalgic to me.

Ponyfan

Called it!  :P

As for online sales… Good luck. It’s notoriously bananas with people getting in a tizzy about not being able to place orders, carts being emptied, and after the fact orders being cancelled, lost, and/or delayed.

B&BW released a straight-up myrrh candle in 2017 that I thoroughly enjoyed. Later they released a frankincense and myrrh blend that I disliked. Thus, I conclude I don’t like frankincense. But I’m always open to sniffing new blends because sometimes my tastes change!

I had both in incense. I like frankincense a lot, it's kind of spicy and woodsy. Myrrh is a very earthy, like wet dirt. I went looking on Amazon and found a blended soy candle with good reviews (https://www.amazon.com/Just-Makes-Scents-Frankincense-Scented/dp/B00SF3L6NO/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Just%2BMakes%2BScents&qid=1702914801&sr=8-4&th=1). Speaking of incense, this company has a Dragon's Blood candle. That was my favorite to burn, but I've never seen it in a candle before. I'd like to try it.

I had to stop with the incense because of my hamsters.

This thread has gone under my radar o:
I like candles, but I feel like I don't *know* how/when/etc to use them xD like I know how to light a candle, to let it melt to the sides the first time and such, but I don't know *when* to candle? I have a small collection of scented candles next to my work space, that I will sometimes take the lid off to sniff, but yeah. I have a giant Caramel Swirl Yankee Candle that I love the smell of. I would also love to get some strawberry scented stuff, but I am holding off since I just never... burn them.
What do you guys do with them? When do you burn the candles? Someone teach me how to be into candles please, lol.

We also have two cats, one of which is Orange and will get into everything so we often use battery candles. I am also awfully scatterbrained and scared I'll forget I'm burning a candle -.-'

My orange cat lit her tail on fire once... so glad I was there to put it out because she had NO idea. Sweet Mousie. I miss her.

I would suggest lighting a candle when you are working, since they are already by your work space. I like to light mine while I'm at my desk. It's hot now though and I always have the fan on, so I've been using them less because they don't burn very well with a breeze on them.

But yeah. When you know you are going to be at your work station for a while, I would light one :) If you need to get up for any length of time, like to make something to eat, blow it out so your kitty doesn't get too curious.

As far as forgetting, just put it close to where your line of vision is. Like, if you're working on an iPad or something but it above that, so it's always in your peripheral. Hard to forget when it's in your face

thanks BC! Idk, maybe this is one of those things where I'm like 'doesn't it have to be a special occasion?' but lighting one while working is a great idea. I mostly work at my desk all day. The Orange is around a lot up until noon, then he has his afternoon nap, so maybe I should start lighting one once he's gone. Cozy!
