Yay! I just got into this series but its been really interesting so far! I can't wait to see how they'll handle My Little Pony! I'm almost afraid to watch it with my family like I have been past episodes, they already ask me so many questions about the toys I don't collect, we'll never get through this one! :P

Do you guys think they will handle it with respect? I worry there will be a lot of unnecessary focus on Bronies from a negative 'look at these cringey people' Stand point

I doubt there will be a focus on Bronies since the modern ponies are not "the toys that made us"

I only watched the girl toy episodes admittedly so I assumed they sort of followed the toys through the years, I'm pretty sure they did that with the Barbie Episode? or maybe they didn't

EDIT: Yeah they did follow the Barbie Brand up until 2017 with the Fashionistas, so I assumed they would give a full history for MLP, G1-4 But with a primary focus on G1 :)

I expect them to treat it like other episodes which have all been primarily about the toys.  I remember reading an interview with the creators who said they wanted to make a show that was about the toys and not so much the fandom.  I mean, there are already shows that focus on fans or collections.  What makes this show different is how much it really does focus on the creation and evolution of the toy brand.  For example, during the Star Wars and Star Trek episodes I don't remember them once stopping to talk about fan conventions or cosplay or other areas of fandom outside of the toys.

Not saying that we will get away with absolutely no mention of Bronies.  But I expect it to be towards the end of the episode where maybe they will mention them as being a reason that certain merchandise like the Funkos started targeting the adult fans.

I do admit, I'm really putting my faith in them giving the whole brand it's due, in chronological order, as they have with other episodes.

I think there will be possibly a short segment on bronies. Not the main focus of the episode, as the show focuses on older toys. They will most likely make mention of bronies, Possibly have a few minutes dedicated to analyzing the phenomena. But I don’t think brony is what the focus is.
What if someone here on the arena has already been interviewed but has been sworn to secrecy until the episode airs? I’ve known people in production work. With the exception of what the executives say can be said, all involved are sworn to never say or leak anything regarding the matter.

Still I hope she will be interviewed as a fan and not as the self proclaimed Queen Of The Bronies (I spy her greek goddess ponysona on that table...)

I’m scared to watch it, to be honest.  I’ll probably wait to see how everyone else reacts before I check it out.  Don’t wanna waste half an hour on “OMG bronieeez” and G3 hate.  If everyone else seems pleased that it focuses on the history of the toy franchise, I’ll definitely happily watch.

Ugh, yeah I dunno.  I have a lot of mixed feelings about this show and/or the editing process when speaking to toy designers who were working in the 80s.  The first season, the He-Man episode actively made me mad because of all the "She-Ra is the death to He-Man" garbage.

That garbage came from one of the He-Man guys at Mattel, which made it kinda worse.

I watched the transformers version of the toys that made us and overall I thought it was really good as they did focus on the toys.

So I'm hoping they focus on the toy line and not so much the fad that G4 became.

I did post on they're facebook page and told them I hope that they will focus more on MLP brand G1 and not simply focus on G4.

They responded by giving me the thumbs up emoji. So I'm crossing my fingers that they will do a good job on talking about the origins of MLP more than just doing 50 minutes what's popular right now and 10 minutes of G1, etc.

Very curious to see where they take this. In my experience, people tend to think of bronies as being synonymous with adult pony fans, so I'm wondering if they're going to more have an episode on them instead of us (collectors).

Because this show seems to be about toys, I really hope they don't do that...we're totally different categories of people after all! Mentioning them is one thing but I think if they make a "brony episode" where they should be making a "pony collector episode" instead, it'll just confuse people more. But who knows! This is only speculation based on my own experiences with people who know ponies are a popular thing nowadays (I have stories about this sort of thing but anyways...)

Although I do think it's good either way that they're including lots of the people responsible for making G1. I'll be watching for their interviews no matter what happens.

Based on that picture and watching all the other episodes, I would say we don't have to worry about it becoming a "brony" episode! They dive pretty deep into each toyline's history, and while they do touch upon how they become phenomenons, it doesn't seem to detract from the informative aspect.

I've watched almost all the Season 1 episodes by now and they are GREAT.  It's crazy how many decisions were made due to a whim, or running out of money, or happenstance. Absolutely pumped for a MLP episode!!!

ALSO.  Check out those prototypes behind the G3 giant baby pony and the rabbits, the ones with the marbled bodies.  Gorgeous!

Is that centaur a custom or a rejected prototype?  I would be more interested in EQG if they were all centaurs . . .

I spotted those marbles ponies too. Maybe they were going to be the Celestials or something? They don’t look quite ‘right’, but I guess that’s why they’re prototypes.

EDIT: Just looked at the big photo and they’re clearly not marbled Celestials, they’re G3! I love the design though.

When you see them up close they aren't really marbled but have a pattern of different items all over them(teapots, butterflies, hearts etc).   There is a friend of Kirk Hindman who likes to tinker with toys to come up with new gimmicks for the ponies.   These transfers placed over the ponies was one of his ideas that he'd tried out.  :)

One of the people with Bonnie is Summer Hayes.  In fact, it looks like they are in Summer's house which I recognize from some videos Summer has posted.  I'm not familiar with who the other person is but I suspect that it's someone else involved with organizing the Fair?

I can't see the picture you posted but I will say that for a while TTTMU was posting pics of various collections that people would send them, especially if they included a poster of the TTTMU logo.  They've stopped doing that now that they have started posting pics of the various people they are interviewing.

Aw, ok.  I misread and thought you were saying the picture was of "Summer and I".

Man, they had me up until the “Lauren Faust” interview news.  Nope.

I didn't think it was likely that they would *not* do an interview with Faust.  But thus far we have 3 interviews with G1 insiders plus Summer to only 2 interviews with the FIM crowd.  I still feel confident that the episode will be great.

Did you see one of the comments on that Instagram post with Faust "MLP owes a lot to Faust" lololololol haha

I didn't see that as I don't have instagram yet.  But on Facebook some on called Kirk Hindman an "OB, original Brony."

But these are just people commenting, not the staff of the show.

I like the checkered ponies a lot.

Did they do any interviews with G2 and G3 designers?

I haven't seen evidence of it yet but I don't know that they have posted pictures from all their interviews or if there are still interviews to be done.

I think since they are only starting to post pictures now in season 3 to hype season 1 & 2 they probably aren't going to show "everyone" So here's to hoping we get more awesome designers! :D

Just because there's an interview with Lauren Faust doesn't mean her interview won't be "about" G1.  She had loads of G1 toys as a kid.  I mean, it's likely to touch on G4, but could be along the lines of "playing with these great toys as a kid was why I was interested in being involved in a MLP show as an adult".  She is literally pictured with a table full of G1 ponies.

Did they do any interviews with G2 and G3 designers?

I am very interested in seeing if MLP's Forgotten Generation, G2, gets a mention!

The G2s were designed by recently acquired Kenner employees, and they did interview Kenner employees extensively for the Star Wars episode.  So it's possible they would also interview them for the MLP segment?

Edit:  I believe the designer pictured with the Moondreamers bunnies has molded ponies for G1, G3, and G4.  He's truly left his mark on the brand!

*wiggles*  So glad the show is embracing the original G1 so much.  Of course they would have to, because without G1, there would be no G4 and Lauren Faust would have just have had to contend with "improving" some other CalArts animated show... ;) She is married to the creator of Powerpuff Girls, after all!

Ah good. It would not be a proper documentary if they didn't do a little on each.

Didn't it used to be a rumor/story that the Power Puff Girls where named for MLP?  Seems it might be true since Faust has said in a panel before that she owned Bubbles as a child.

I'm reasonably confident that's just a coincidence. Lauren and Craig met through PPG, so I don't think she had anything to do with naming them.

So is MLP featured on this show now or is it coming soon?  I'm glad that Summer's on there though because she will give a proper opinion about classic MLP collectors.  By proper you don't get someone who mainly collects G4 and believes anything before G4 is garbage and they give their false opinion about what G1's and G3's were all about.

The mlp episode will be in season 3 which isn’t out yet but will probably be released sometime before the end of the year.  The show actually doesn’t spend much time interviewing fans.  It primarily focuses on the ins and outs of the actual toy business.  All of the interviews that we know about thus far are actual people involved with the brand, including 2 designers and 2 sculptors who worked on g1.  Summer is the only exception so far but she has plenty of reasons why she would be included as more than just the average fan.

Agree. Unfortunately she will doubtless be involved in this project somewhere. I don't know whether she did or did not make the statements about G1 attributed to her, but she hasn't done anything to dispel them, thus I cannot respect her or consider her a genuine fan of G1. It has nothing even to do with G4, I'm fine about that being involved...but someone involved in FIM which also involved creating misapprehensions about G1? Has no place in a show about real MLP for me I'm afraid.

I have no issue with G4 ponies but for me FIM has damaged MLP and its possibilities of being reinvented or completely fresh and new in the future if rebooted. And that's kind of hard to forgive. I'm not going so far as to say Faust ruined MLP. But FIM - and hasbro's obsession with mane 6 - has.

From my experience with MLP, FiM brought the franchise back into relevancy with a wider audience. Faust is from an era that brought MLP back into the limelight. There is more of a hype now from people of all ages about MLP than what there was in the entirety of the 80s.

I don't know how there could be myths about toys that are meant for a child to project themselves or their imaginations onto; where they rename, recolor, re-gender, turn into monsters or heroes, etc, but anyone who used their My Little Pony figures to enact fantastical stories obviously knew how to use them. No one needed the cartoon or package backcard stories to do that.

The toys of MLP made me because it encouraged my imagination in my own little world, not because the world told me how to use them. I do not mind that Faust's name comes up because she's part of MLP's legacy.

You have to keep in mind...before she was the series bible creator for FiM, Lauren Faust was just a nostalgic hungry vintage pony collector like the rest of us.  Whether you agree with her methods, or disagree with them, deciding whether or not someone is a "true fan" or not in that way isn't helping either.

Hasbro was looking to have a core cast since near the end of G3. It was just FIM that caught on with the audience so they of course want to stick with that lineup since it works.

I need to speak up on Lauren's behalf.

I introduced her to Bonnie, and you can't fake the emotion she showed in that moment. That day she had a My Pretty Pony, with its box, and hoped I could help her get Bonnie to sign it. You can't fake how genuine she was about it. I handed her tissues during the Creators Panel when she told Bonnie how much My Little Pony meant to her.

2 years later at EQLA 2017, she had worked a long day, and had signed a lot of autographs and met a lot of fans, and at 10 PM she still wanted to go leave the convention venue to see my pony room instead of go home. She couldn't have faked the joy and enthusiasm for the collection as a whole and mostly for the rare G1s I have, and as it was just the 2 of us she had no reason to.

She's the real deal, guys.

I think you're  right. Wasn't Bill the one that Kirk said loves to experiment to see what kind of new ways there are to make ponies, like the sparkle ponies?  If  that was the guy then he's also the one who made the neat patterned ponies seen in pic of Kirk that the show posted.

Well, if it's any comfort, I doubt it'll be The Faust Show - from what I've seen, The Toys That Made Us touches briefly with several different designers and toy-folks, so I imagine she'll be asked to give a brief discussion on how her childhood toys influenced her writing for the first season or so of MLP:FiM. And she does have some interesting insight in that regard! It's nice to see a childhood collector 'make good' as an adult content-creator for the same line. :) I do agree that her whole 'G1-G3 cartoons were lame' stance is an unfortunate belief that some creators seem to share; namely, "if I didn't make it, it's not worth watching". :P But that's not unique to her, unfortunately! It happens in the comics realm, too.

I'll be excited to see it, I hope we get to see some unique prototypes or ideas that never got made!! :frolic: And YES, OMG, I'd love to see Sebby and Shelti represented!! I wish this had happened a few years before, imagine seeing the Delaney's collection ... omg.

Sure, if you want to avoid the show then more power to anyone who decides that. Do what you do, as you do.

tl;dr rant - open at your own risk
But, I would have to heavily disagree that Faust should be the reason. One should not have to be a drooling fangirl that is a walking wiki to be a fan of any franchise, especially when they had a hand in the 35+ year legacy that wouldn't have had as much notoriety while G3 existed.

Even then, G1's show and movies were terrible- the quality of the animation and the stories were pretty rough. And then the theme song... The theme song was an earworm that was used in the commercials nonsensically that barely rhymed half the time with repeating, droning lyrics meant to sell the toys. Does that mean that anyone who criticizes the created media and believe that G4 media is superior in quality and storytelling means that they are not a fan of MLP as a whole?

If so, then that's really disappointing to hear. As I've grown into my flavor of shows/movies to watch and "what makes them good", the G1 toys certainly didn't improve the show's over-all narrative and animation  ;P

As with all art, it's subjective and opinions will vary on it for different reasons. Just because anyone thinks G1-G3 media has a lameness that not even Jesus could heal doesn't mean that they are wrong for liking the toys.

Suffice it to say, "The Simpsons already did it." In this day and age, in order to reinvent anything when everything has been done death by every other kid-friendly franchise ESPECIALLY by Disney, and likely really well the first time around, that's going to be a difficult task for anyone accomplish.

Anyway, the context of calling G1-G3 "lame" is best put into her own words here (http://msmagazine.com/blog/2010/12/24/my-little-non-homophobic-non-racist-non-smart-shaming-pony-a-rebuttal/comment-page-4/):
Quote
To look at the quality of most girls’ cartoons -...- more expensive animated productions for girl audiences may look better, but the female characters have been so homogenized with old-fashioned “niceness” that they have no flaws and are unrelatable. They are so pretty, polite and perfect; there is no legitimate conflict and nothing exciting ever happens. In short, animated shows for little girls come across as boring.  Stupid. Lame.
She's not wrong. MLP G1 (I passed by G2 when I was younger) and MLP G3 really do fall into that category.

At the end of the day, she really did have a hand in making candy-colored, magical talking horses much more realistic and believable as people with more realistic stakes and conflicts. There are not many shows (aside from "some" Disney, but that is few and far between) that really do that.

Needless to say, with what has been accomplished with FiM as a show, NOT as a toy line, I am really happy to see her involved.

There are currently six people (including Summer) interviewed for the show that were heavily involved in the early generations to only the two g4 people.  I really feel like refusing to watch the show because Lauren Faust is in it is throwing the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak.

Sweet Daes, I agree that it's not a good idea to start picking out individual people and claiming they aren't a fan of mlp just because they approach their expression of it differently.  Though I do acknowledge that there are those people out there who are fans of the show only and not the brand as a whole.  In fact, that's one of the ways I explain it to non-fans when I'm trying to explain why I don't like being labeled a brony.

I disagree with the vehemence with which some of my fellow collectors express their views. But I do want to explain why you sometimes see that reaction around here, at least from my point of view as a long time collector who grew up during G1.

So My Little Pony the toyline was like our very best childhood friend.  It was the main point and the reason we all connected to the brand.  The various cartoons for MLP was like that childhood friend's kid brother.  The kind of kid brother that was quarky, often annoying, and certainly had it's faults.  We like picking on it when it's just us.

But since FiM became popular on the internet, it's like we came upon our best friend's kid brother being beat up by a mob and our best friend taking hits because she's related.  That's kind of what it's like when I'm out there on the web.  Used to be that MLP was something we enjoyed in our own little corner.  But now every time something old school is posted in a public forum  there is a whole group of people who just feel the need to groan and make not pleasant comments about the thing I cherish from childhood.  Even when it's something innocuous like MLP Facebook page just acknowledging that there was a history to MLP before FIM.

It tends to make us defensive, annoyed and angry, even those of us who like the show and g4.

Since what I posted has been quoted many times and used in several different points, I want to clarify my point for initially posting it.

I do fully intend to watch the MLP episode of TTTMU since I love MLP and that series. I don't mind they are interviewing the newer people, I don't want it to be a disproportianate amount. I just find it insulting FIM fans think My little pony owes so much to Faust. My little pony had been running for 3 decades before FIM and would've done just fine with only children as the audience.

I have watched all of FIM and the movie, but objectively as someone who watches tons of cartoons I just don't think it is as innovative as bronies say it is. Look at my join date, FIM brought me back to seriously collecting but you can't deny the quality of the writing has gone way down. I think it's rude to discredit all of the other amazing and ground breaking cartoons we had in the 2010s

I just want all the generations to get the respect they deserve

The thing there is, too; "Brony" doesn't mean what people think it means. Just like people want to think there are "myths" and "misconceptions" for G1, the fans of G4 have taken more cynical punches because there is a select subset of people with gross, disgusting habits who have demonstrated such in the public eye that wear their fandom on their sleeves.

In essence, this mish-mash of ideals is under the same umbrella of MLP:
Not all male fans of MLP are Bronies.
Not all Bronies are disgusting adults.
Bronies CAN be fans of G1.
Bronies MAY collect G1 ponies AND G4 ponies.
Bronies MAY collect G1 ponies, but not G4 ponies.
Not all fans of G1 like G4.
Not all fans of G4 like G1.
Fans of G1 may collect G4 toys.
Fans of both may not like the show of both.
Fans who like the show of both may not care for the toys of either.
AND MORE...

To be frank, to does reflect poorly when the G4 show and its fans are snubbed. For some, that is why there is an inferiority complex in more modern-day fans. This is especially so because  some of us haven't watched other cartoons of the 2010s (I barely watch TV, and haven't in over 15 years) and only have G1, G3 and G4 media to compare, of which I have expressed my viewpoint.

And, the FiM movie blows chunks, especially since the characters that Faust laid the groundwork for were written so out of their character. If anyone cared to see the opinions of self-proclaimed Bronies, there a lot of very critical reviews on YouTube. Does that make the TV show bad? Well, if the movie is your first introduction to FiM, then yes. Yes, it would be bad.

Basically, FiM exists, and owes its existence to G1 IN SPIRIT. But make no mistake- that doesn't mean G1 fans are superior by any means, and it's disappointing that these opinions are being used as weapons when there is ample information out there to say differently. People can be a fan of everything or can pick and choose the elements of the franchise that they enjoy.

In short, TTTMU is not going to be a good representation of the fandom as a whole, regardless of who they interview.

It's not going to be a representation of the fandom at all.  This show is not about fandoms.  It's about the toys and the toy industry.  I read an interview by one of the creators  and he stated that he didn't want to do a show that was about fandoms, there are already lots of those types of shows.  He wanted to concentrate on the actual toys.  I've watched all of the episodes and adult collectors/fandom are mentioned very minimally, if at all.

Correct.

A lot of this was in response to Faust not being a "true fan" and that should restrict her from being interviewed.

Honestly, I think her being interviewed for this could be a good thing. Her presence and promotion of the episode will probably get some bronies and other various people to watch, bringing a different audience and more people. They could learn a thing or two and some misconceptions could be corrected, which might help with some hate and attitudes. (Though there are ways this could be the opposite...)

I send them some pics and the link of my video collection in Youtube, I wrote the email almost 10 days ago but I didn´t receive an answer yet.

Anyway, I know that in the Hello Kitty show they used without permission parts of a video of a youtuber I watch, she said that they never contacted her to ask if they could use her video, so, maybe I have chances and they use my vid without answer or contact me back

My pics and video are about G3, maybe they want to focus on G1 and G4  :pout:

They could learn a thing or two and some misconceptions could be corrected, which might help with some hate and attitudes.

Unfortunately, I think any FIM fan that is actively hating on G1 is either 1) very young or 2) completely indoctrinated. With 1, the hate is just a middle-school-esque in-group/out-group reflex. They don't even know why they despise older MLP, they just do it because that's the decreed Thing To Hate. With 2, they're so up their own fandom that they really do believe that MLP as a brand needed "saving" and that a good-to-mediocre cartoon did it. (Because now men pay attention to it? Like that's a mark of quality instead of horsefeather sexism??) Either way, both groups are pretty unreachable at this point. You can't debate in good faith with either a 12 year old or a /b/rony.

I do believe that Lauren Faust has a genuine love of MLP, and that she really tried her best to make FIM a quality show while she was running it. (Hopefully, disliking the Friends and Tales cartoons doesn't make you a "fake fan", or I have about a thousand ponies to liquidate! lol) I think it's pretty cool that she had the opportunity to take what we all did as kids -- imagining personalities and adventures for our toys -- and turn it into something bigger. Faust owes MLP, not the other way around, and if we're talking about "The Toys That Made Us", that fits the bill pretty well IMO. But on the other hand, I'm not interested in hearing her or Tara Strong talk about the cartoon(s) at all. There have already been a thousand venues for that, so I hope the editors cut wisely.

I know that in the Hello Kitty show they used without permission parts of a video of a youtuber I watch, she said that they never contacted her to ask if they could use her video

That's terrible! I hope they behave more ethically for their MLP episode. I would hate to see anyone in our community get taken advantage of like that.

Personally I will be disappointed if they make the show about the 'fandom'.

The only episode I think I've watched full through is the transformers episode as I chose that one first on netflix as it's the only toy of the episodes listed at the time that I was more invested in to watch.

The show was about the toy and the people that created it. I don't remember ever detail but I don't think that episode talked about the transformer fandom that much or even at all.

It was about the toyline, it's creation, and the creators of it, etc.

As far as I'm concerned that is what this program is supposed to be.

If they make the MLP episode all about the 'fans' (or more spacifically the G4 centered fandom) - It will be a big disappointment to me and I will probably complain to them.

I don't mind them talking to actual collectors like Summer, etc. People like Summer and others know the toyline. And since this show is about TOYS, they need to focus on the toys NOT the hype associated with G4.

If I see a bunch of humans yackity-yacking about G4 and who is 'best pony' or how G4 taught adult fans morals or how G4 is so much better because of how awesome the 'fans' are and how we're so tolerate (unless faced with a G3 pony)...

Just...no.

Okay.

I'm a G1 fan at heart. So I want it to be about the toyline, how the concepts came into being, how they created ponies, and I want to see the toy ponies.

If it's about the toyline, it's a WIN, IMO.

I’m excited for this episode, and I think it will be awesome. I hope it will feature the toy line more than anything else- and then the whole toy line. Including both G2 and G3. They have all contributed to the development of the brand ^.^

I have to say though that I am a little surprised at how often we try to compare G1 and G4. I have read several places, including this thread, that the G1 show is lacking in animation and narrative. This is a rant that goes a little off-topic- so I’ll put the rest under a spoiler.

Spoiler
I am a history teacher, so I might be a little too aware of this, but I constantly remind my class to look at literature, movies or products in the context and time era they were made. It doesn’t make sense to me to compare the animation from G1 to the animation in G4. Of course G1 will be lacking in comparison! The show was made in the 80’s! And the narrative we see in the FiM show would never have been approved for a childrens show in the 80’s. It just wouldn’t happen. Dialogue today is often written more witty and with a broader appeal - just look at concepts such as Shrek, Toy Story or Frozen. All with a broad appeal that has inspired teens, YA and grown-ups. It’s not unexpected that the same would happen to MLP.

The G1 show however were not made in a time were show-producers tried to also appeal to a broader audience. It was written for little girls and boys, in a different time than FiM. I read a lot about niceness, too much of it, when it comes to G1. To me - a lot of dark stuff happened in that show. I was scared silly watching Rescue at Midnight Castle when I was a kid! I wouldn’t say the show was all about niceness or a boring narrative. Was it the best show of the 80’s? No, probably not- but it wasn’t terrible either. I think it is extremely unfair to compare it to G4. And of course, the other way around.

I still hope for the G2/G3 thing to be acknowleged. Why the drastic redesign to G2, how G3 re-established MLP in the US and freshened up the brand.
People like to claim G4 saved MLP but G3 already did that a few years prior. My favorite part of MLP history - the gen so many people look down on for being "dumb, girly, no relatable characters" was actually what made MLP boom again.

I also hope they don't gloss over or entirely skip G2 and G3. I would really love to hear more about the developement and design process for those lines.

If we go by previous episodes it'll be how the brand was established and end it with where it stands today. I can't see them emphasize on each generation equally within 45 minutes, realistically G2 will probably be tied to the decline in the US and G3 as the prequel to G4.

I agree with this.  I believe they will at least touch on G2.  In previous episodes like the Star Trek episode and the Lego episode they did spend at least a little time talking about failures or misses within the brand.

(And I know G2 wasn't a failure internationally, but it was in the US and since this is a US based show and Hasbro is a US born company....)

I agree with Katrine's spoiler. As a historian too, anachronism is problematic ;)

I hope that whatever the show does, it doesn't present it as though every generation is somehow building up to G4. I hope they're all treated as separate generations, as they deserve to be.

It is a shame for G2 because of the lack of interest in the US, but I hope it is included nonetheless.

As an international, I am really only interested in it if it talks about the creation of G1. I'm not really interested in the production of the animation for G1 because it wasn't much of my childhood...so I would be happy if they focus only on toys, and not on animation at all.

Yeah, the show is about toys . . . not fandoms and not animation.

When they talk about cartoons, it's to tie it into the toyline, i.e. "the He-Man cartoon really made sales take off" or "thanks to the cartoon, Prince Adam was introduced, even though the toy company had never intended He-Man to have an alter ego."

If you guys haven't seen the show yet, I highly recommend it.  It's fascinating and, a lot of the time, really funny.  ("If it's as big as a horse, PUT A SADDLE ON IT!" :P )

I agree.   I've been fascinated by all the episodes even though they weren't all about toys that I had any personal interest in.  They were well laid out with the history of each line with their interviews and if the toy had origens from outside the US they made sure to include those incarnations (Transformers for example had a big life in Japan that was unrecognizable to the toys we know in North America).

They mention cartoons but the series makes it very clear that it is all about the toys.  The Star Wars episode did not dwell on the movies at all other than to mention that in year such and such which of the movies was the current one.

So I would say MLP is in great hands with the showrunners for The Toys That Made Us.  They really are putting their time and effort into getting each episode right.

He doesn’t give much away about the upcoming episodes.  MLP is mentioned a couple of times.  In particular, he references it in comparison to the He-man episode where they juggled the different perspectives of the various people who where involved with the creation of the toy line.

Also, he states that they are no longer going to do the re-enactments in future episodes.  I’m a little disappointed.  I thought those parts where kind of fun.

I have seen the Brony doc with his smug self, so I don't expect him to say anything positive about gen 1-3.

Ugh.  Having this dude on doesn’t really help me want to see this thing.

This is why I was hesitant to post that news here.  I'm going to reserve my judgement till I see it.  And even if his part is cringe worthy, it won't spoil my enjoyment of the rest of the show.

You've probably heard this guy's voice a million times... Ben Patrick Johnson is one of the top trailer and promo voices in Hollywood! He's narrated trailers for films, such as, Trolls, Boss Baby, Mike and Dave, Peanuts Movie, Woman in Gold, Big Eyes, Book of Life, the Oscar-winning Philomena, and OF COURSE the #MyLittlePonyMovie!

Is he the guy with the big, deep voice on epic mode?

They have to touch on all generations! I'm only a G1 collector, used to watch the G1 series as a kid, and am an occasional FiM watcher, but every corner of the fandom should get its due, even Bronies. The Toys That Made Us is pretty good about letting people have their joy, but focusing more on the making-of industry stories.

Can't wait to see the My Little Pony episode! But also the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers episodes will be fun to see too. All the old school goodies are getting some love.

Ehhhh I like John deLancie, especially from his time on Star Trek.  :)  I am sure the show is doing its best to come up with a well-rounded episode.  I am sure the Star Wars fans had lots of negative things to say about their episode.  "They mentioned the Holiday Special! AUGH"

Agreed! Q is arguably one of the best characters in the Star Trek universe thanks to John de Lancie.

Let's see if us European G2 buyers get as much exposure as Bronies then. We kept Hasbro's toyline alive when the US wasn't buying any.
Bronies already have a ton of documentaries about them. Made by themselves, so it's more like watching a propaganda vid
G2 and the shadow years of MLP are the least talked about aspects of the brand.

I agree.  It would be bizarre if they mentioned all the generations except the current one, LOL.

But I really came on there to mention that stylized MLP flutter ponies are in the animated intro of the show in the first season.  :)

I also like Q in Star Trek.  Poor Captain Picard . . . :P

I guess it really would be weird if they did the MLP episode with no mention of the current generation or the weird brony phenomenon-

My only hope is that they don't let that focus dominate the episode.  I'd rather seen awesome collections and prototypes and hear from the original designers and marketing folks for G1 and G2-  since those are the toys that "made" us...

Seems they may also mention the recent sales of the new G1 ponies at Target?  I bet they've been pretty popular- it would be great to hear from someone at the company who actually can say what's going on at least in terms of how popular the retro ponies have been (and maybe some hints about the next wave of retros?)

It would be cool to show a male G1-G3 fan and show that boys always liked MLP. They were just told not to.

Instead of the always samey Brony story of "I saw this cartoon and it was smart and funny so I figured it was for me instead of little girls".

Yes! They have to mention all the cool nirvanas out there and all the gens! Wouldn't be a complete history without G2s.

Wednesdays, called that because it's the middle of the week, for some reason.

Hump day?

Wednesday is "Hump Day" because it falls in the middle of most folks work weeks, once youve gotten through Wendesday- you're "over the hump" (aka more than 50% through the week/onto the presumably more casual work days)

Hasbro...

It was the Toys That Made Us post not Hasbro’s.  Hasbro gets blamed for a lot but I don’t think this one’s their fault.

If you consider the week a hill then Wednesday is the point when you go over the summit and the rest of the week is downhill towards the weekend.

I'll say it again, I'm not even that big on G3s but if the episode does not give G3 proper credit then it's worthless.

I have a bad feeling it will only focus on G1 and G4 (yuck)
IMO there is no point in interviewing VAs like Tara Strong, etc. as they have nothing to do with either the toys or even the conception of the brand's media.

I didn't blame them  I assumed this was on Hasbro's Facebook because they post more about 80s ponies right now.

We'll have to agree to disagree.  I definitely won't view it as 'worthless' if they thoroughly cover G1, regardless of what else they do or don't cover.  :)  The Transformers episode skipped a lot of generations and it was still great.  Though personally I suspect G3 will be covered.  They covered "The New He-Man" from the 90s, and that was the flash of an eye!

Incidentally, just because they interview people doesn't mean all of them will be in the show.  They interviewed Michael Bay and his segments weren't used at all.

In that one interview with the creator of the show he refused to say who had been interviewed because he said they had pushback when not everyone they had interviewed ended up in the show.  Which is interesting considering how many people have been posted on Facebook.

Peter Cullen voiced the original Optimus as well as several other incarnations of the character. He is mostly known for being Optimus, so it made sense they asked him about the character.

Kelly Sheridan voices ponies since Tales. She was G1 Melody and she is Starlight Glimmer in FiM. She's also been Barbie's voice for years and has always performed the singing of her characters herself.
Tabitha St. Germain, Andrea Libman and Kathleen Barr have been voicing ponies since the G3 specials, Tabitha being G3 fan fave Minty.

I would enjoy seeing them say a few things about MLP.
