Title: Showing your friends your collection.
Post by: tuneful87 on January 15, 2012, 05:22:23 PM
Have you done it? Or are you a closet collector?

Last night I had a dinner party with several guy friends. In my living room display cabinet were all my custom ponies, as always. I've been comfortable showing them off for quite some time. I finally decided it's time to showcase my original MLP as well, so I devoted the entire bottom shelf to them - Chief, Lavender Lace, piggies Minty and Lemondrop, Greek Sunbeam, Peruvian Windy, Lemon Treats, Sugarberry, Red Roses, Scrumptious, Wigwam, Frankie, Sunburst, German Tiffany, Applejack, Seaflower, Pristina, Magic Star, and Skippy.

Guess what? They couldn't even tell the difference between real MLP and the cool customs! They teased me a little, but it was all in good sport! hehe

Well, I was a closet collector for a few years and have just recently felt more comfortable telling people about my ponies.  My husband is the only one who has really seen my collection.  However, my best friends and my co-workers now know that I am a collector.  My conversation starter is my beautiful Zazzle Summer Winger iPhone case my hubby gave me for Christmas; people see it and they love it!

My friends saw my collection in my room when they came over to help out after I had my baby. They were like, "Holy crap! That is a LOT of My Little Ponies!!!" Which makes me laugh because it was only about 1/3 of my collection, the rest is in a tote. :silly: They seemed to like it though and thought they were really pretty.

If anyone enters my room they immediately know I'm a collector. xD
However no one comes in my room but my boyfriend's mom (who I live with) and my boyfriend when he visits. My best friend is very aware of my collection (as she got me into MLP, lol) but she lives in Canada so she's never seen them in person or anything.

I don't hesitate to talk about my ponies or MLP in general, or to post photos. I've got photos all over my Facebook and on deviantART so anyone who cares to look can figure it out very easily. I don't care who knows, and if people give me crap for it I block and ignore them. :3

Hmm... Well, I never try to hide them or anything, but they're not something I go out of my way to bring up.
Most of my friends know that I make custom ponies and dolls, so seeing that stuff in my house isn't surprising...

I don't COLLECT too many ponies, but my favorites are allll over my room. Surprise, Sugar Apple, Bubbles, and Tootsie live right over my bed, and the others are on a shelf above my computer... So they're kinda obvious, to anyone who visits. :)

Pretty much everyone who knows me (including coworkers) know that I collect ponies, so it's not really a big deal. It's always fun when someone new comes over and their face goes O_______________O when i show them what little parts of my collection are on display...and then they have a heart attack when i tell them there's more...in boxes. lol.

My friends know that I collect, but I don't think they're sure of how to react to seeing my collection. It's usually a joking "Wow, you have problems," which is about as funny as a customer saying "If it doesn't scan, it's free."

One of 'em actually started reading about pony history on her own, though.

Most people I talk to know I collect ponies. I have worn some pony necklaces I have made and even brought a few ponies to school before to show one of my 'brony' friends. My friends are okay with it and the other students usually do not give me a hard time about it (they will ask questions, but they aren't rude or anything).
My Forensic Science teacher actually thinks it is pretty cool and is super supportive. I brought in a few ponies I had for a toy drive we had in the class and my teacher ended up keeping them on her desk until we had to turn them in. I also was messing around in class and made a pony out of clay that we were using to make the muscles and she ended up keeping it on her desk!

I really dont mind what people think about my collection so I'm open about it   :awake:  (of course not just anyone can go into the pony room and no touchie is allowed without me being there though ;)  )
I think that the more people that know you collect, the more people there are to potentially help you hunt ponies.. right?! :accomplished:  :good:

I cop a bit of harmless poking fun at me from time to time about my ponies, but most people that know me are aware its who I am. I am not really an active collector any more, but still have a few ponies and a giant RD, plus heaps of unicorn related stuff, most of my friends just buy me random unicorn stuff instead of picking on me about the weirdness that is pony collecting :P lol so I ain't complaining. I never hid my love of ponies or toys, if someone doesn't like it, I don't really care, most of my friends think its pretty cool, in a non nerdy way hahaha.

I was treated as a "mascot" in my last full time job, as a security guard, the boys would often tell complete strangers about my pony collection and ask me to show them photos :) most people that know me fore more than about 5 minutes aren't shocked about it, its almost expected.

My collection's not really hidden, it's on a shelf to the left of my desk. I recently had some clients over to reference some work I was doing for them, and they were entertained by it.

Fortunately I work in an industry where quirks are acceptable, and expected, so no one's going to think strangely of the ponies in my home.

I am a loud and proud pony collector. *Everyone* who knows me, knows I collect ponies. I have ponies at work, in my car, on my purse and sometimes on my clothing. But on the rare occasion someone new gets to see the pony room, they usually stand there absolutely slack jawed. And I just stand there and laugh! The pony room has been described as everything from Insane to Mind Blowing to Outrageous to Epic. (Epic being my favorite.)

Well, anyone who goes into our garage would know I'm a collector because the entire right wall is filled with boxes of my ponies!  (and most of them are see-through).  I usually tell people about my collecting, but not many actually see the ponies.

My few ponies are packed away, and I'm not a current collector. However, I do have a lot of other collections displayed in my room (Care Bears being the big one, along with my Attic Treasures, CPKs, American Girls, Monster High, and Zodiac Girlz).  I don't really have people in my room because I'm not sure how they'll react.  I don't really care, but it would just make HS easier if I was more of a closet collector.  Granted, anyone of my friends/classmates would know I like/collect toys from my FB likes.  It was easier to show my room off in elementary school; everyone thought my bedroom was a mini toy store. :)

I always have a few ponies on display in my front room, but I don't push it, and no ones asked me about it. The rest of my collection is at my computer desk or in my bedroom, and in a tote, but I aggressively rotate who is where etc.

I've passively mentioned to my siblings that I'm collecting and they smile and change the subject.  Oh well.  More for me I guess!

Anyone who comes to our house knows as they're literally everywhere! All our friends think we're either insane or they love it but no one is mean to us! My family think its nice but ponymonsters family think we should sell them and don't know why we like them!

The postman peered in the house once and said he expects to see us on " cash in the attic" one day which is a show where people find valuable stuff to sell in their houses to take to auction or similar
Haha!

I try and keep my pony collecting quiet at work Though colleagues I sit with tend to know and to quote someone they think I'm "sweet but crazy" which I can live with!

Most everyone I know is aware thatI collect ponies. We moved last spring & I finally have a pony room for the first time ever. We haven't had many people over since setting up the pony room, but 2 of my fiancé's friends have got to see it. These guys aren't collector-types, but both were very impressed. The general reaction was "I knew you had a collection, but this is way more than I expected". ;)

Everyone I know knows that I collect.  So most of them are curious to see the collection.  Mine's small (about 60) and I keep it confined to a bookshelf, so it's not total chaos.

If someone were to walk into my room at this moment, they'd know I collect - most of my g4s are on the dvd cabinet and there's a Mexican g3 hanging on my wall.  That said, most of my collection is in the closet - not because I want to hide them but for for space issues and because I want to keep them pristine.  :)

I don't shout it out to every person I meet but I'm a proud pony collector and most people who know me know that.  :)

I have ponies all over my house... I can't really hide them!  I do warn people before they come to my house, I will normally say "Just so you know, I have a rather unusual hobby..." and then say nothing else and watch the surprised look on their face when they get inside the door expecting chains hanging from the ceiling and seeing delightful, colourful ponies instead!

I have had some negative reactions about my collection so I try not to talk about it, but I can't!  I live for ponies, I can't shut up about them!

Well, we have a 'family collection', and they are all kept in my eldest daughter's bedroom, people just think that I spoil her, I try to explain that it's a family collection, but most people just don't get it - they don't realise that a lot of the ponies belong to me & my other daughter aswell.  Most people just don't understand that it's my collection too & that I love them just as much as my daughter does.

Everyone who knows me knows about the ponies. It's hard to walk into a teeny tiny house (small one-car garage that's been converted into a house by sticking a staircase up the middle!) without seeing the ponies everywhere as I have little room to start with and all all spare spaces are filled with ponies! There is no storage here either so I can't keep any hidden away in boxes.

Well, as of right now, my husband and I have a very small apartment, so we do not do much entertaining, so in that aspect, people do not see my collection. However, it is out in the open, and when people do come over, it can be seen. Well, what I have out on display anyway. lol. However, my entire collection is photographed, and I have them all in an album on my facebook page. So in those regards, everyone I know can see my collection. Most people I know actually want to see it all together though....just because they can't believe that that many ponies exist. lol. I have to remind them that even though I have over 600 ponies, I still only have about a third of what is out there. lol. Most people think it's neat.....and those who don't......well, they know better than to say something negative to me about it. lol

Anyone who knows me well at all knows I customize ponies, but not as many know about my original pony collection. Some people think it's weird, but if it means that they'll think of me when they're getting rid of their kids' old collections, that's fine by me! There are far worse things I could be doing to get me thought of as weird!

I'm always worried about what the ladies at the post office think when I get pony packages (it's a VERY small town!), but one actually asked to see pictures of my work the other day, which was kind of nice.

I live in a very small apartment by myself with zero entertainment so I don't really get visitors, but I'm rather self conscious about having a large collection of ponies on display. I've recently gotten a lot more. I don't care about someone seeing a couple sitting around, since they're in my craft room and I have a bunch of other toys and odd and ends in there.
Most of them will probably be put away when I'm expecting company.. for now at least.

My family is another story, they all know I'm weird.  :smug:

This^ lol everyone knows about my collection and lots of people bring me ponys. I work in a auction house so all the dealers bring me pony goodies when they find them- its a good thing to because they find them regularly and before I started working there they were just *gasp* throwing them out!

I've always been very open about my collection. I have a glass case full of G1s in my bedroom that I put my TV on and a huge pile of plushies in one corner, so they're kinda hard to miss.  :P

Then again... I have most of my ponies in storage, so nobody has seen how massive my collection really is.

My friends and family know I collect but since at the moment I live with my parents I don't have friends over often. Some have never seen my collection in person before. Usually it's holy cow! you have a huge collection.. I proceed to laugh and usually tell them that some collectors have 2-3 times as many ponies and it shuts them up and then they just are in shock for awhile.

Pretty much all of my friends know about it, and my family has started giving them to me for birthday/christmas/just because (my sisters do this). Some of my friends give me weird looks on occasion, but they're getting used to it (I was a closet pony enthusiast for a looong time). Also, a few of my friends are also pony collectors (we all discovered this with FiM), so showing off my small collection usually goes something like this:

"OMG, you got so-and-so?" * squee * "I haven't gotten her yet."

I'm pretty open about it but quite literally I am a closet collector. My husband is not overly fond of my ponies so I use the walk in closet in our room to keep my ponies ( and Strawberry Shortcake, Sea wees, Shimmers and LPS collections.)

I don't really have people over to my house as I'm not a people person. The family members who have seen them already know I'm a collector but I think some of them were surprised at how many I have, lol. My granny is an enabler, she buys ponies for me if she sees them at yard sales/thrift shops or if she knows there's a G4 I'm missing ^__^

I'm openly obsessed with ponies, so when my friends found out I had a collection they weren't surprised. One of my friends even said she was surprised my collection had only 7 ponies, because she thought that, for as much as I talked about them, I would have at least 40! Ah, maybe one day. xD

Well... at first I kept my hobby a bit quiet, but have gradually become more and more open about it - it's hard not to talk about something you love! What can be hard in return though, is not necessarily having the same excitement in return when you spill the beans on the latest, most exciting thing that arrived in the mailbox!!  :P   I'll often get the humouring look! My Dad (an avid collector of various things himself) has been very supportive and encouraging however, and boosts my confidence often by saying I have nothing to be embarrassed about - awwww!

What will be interesting, is that I just bought a display cabinet... (yah!!!) It's of course now cleaned up and stocked with my collection (previously hidden away in a box bursting at the seams). I've a couple of friends coming over shortly, one who knows about my habit, the other who knows nothing at all.... Guess I'll see what reactions unfold when the full collection stares them in the face!

My ponies (and LPS) are in cabinets in my bedroom, so most people don't see them, though I'm not intending to hide them...I haven't been super vocal about my collecting, though more and more of my friends know about it, especially since I keep some of my favorites out in our living room (I like to pick seasonal ponies to display...I have my g3 winters out right now).  One of my friends even expressed interest in coming to a meet with me, so they've been super supportive.

Well, I'm very shy and still a minor, so I just keep them on two bookshelves in my bedroom and don't really bring it up. When people come in and see them they really aren't that surprised, since I'm known as being a very sweet, quiet, cutesy girl who likes pink and bunnies and the like...and the fact that my entire room is very pink and sweet really softens the blow. The friends who HAVE seen it usually react with "Awwww, that's so cute" or "Hahaha oh my gosh, of course you would!", and my family doesn't seem to mind although sometimes they tease me playfully. My dad likes to come in and go "I'm going to go knock down the little ponies!!!" and makes funny squeaky noises while he knocks one or two off while I pretend to protest. XD

My immediately family knows. My dad used to own a pawn shop and even posted a "will buy Hasbro My Little Ponies" sign in his store to help me build my collection.

I don't tell most people immediately. I don't have much of a social life so no one ever goes into my room. It's obvious I collect because I have two super enormous bookshelves full of ponies in there. If they ask I would explain. I have had some negative reactions before but most people are nice about it. Some people have encouraged me to sell them and of course that kind makes me give a mental eye roll, haha!

I don't always advertise it. I have told some of my coworkers though and even showed some pics of my collection. I haven't had a negative reaction yet but I wonder if some think I'm nuts.

Can you believe I've become a closet collector. I have probably 40 bins in my garage but since  newly single it's hard to tell when the right time is to tell the bf about my dirty little secret. LOL! I'm getting my nerve up. I do have a beautiful glass shelf in my walk in closet and I'm anxious to get the creams of the crop up there. I miss my ponies tremendously. I'll get there. I still have some other unpacking to do though before I let myself get to the fun stuff. The ponies will be like my reward. :)

Anyone who comes into our house is greeted instantly with toys from my husband and I. People have even commented that our house smells like Christmas morning and the new toy smell. XD I noticed it after taking a box of ponies to a convention to use in a panel. The box smelled strongly of new pony. LOL!

Fortunately for him, the first thing you see is legos and anime figures out the wazoo. Then Monster high dolls. Then an overflowing shelf of Ponies! XD I had to pack away all my video game figures to make room for ponies in our new apartment. I'm looking forward to having space to display everything again.

I'm really open about my collecting. So, I don't feel bad about mentioning that I have ponies. I'll also post new ponies in batches on facebook. LOOK WHAT I GOT. XD

Also, am I the only one who walks into Ikea and instantly sees all the room displays, thinking of how well they would display ponies and other toys? XD

It's hard to hide my pony/toy obsession when people come to my house because toys are everywhere!  My neighbours think I'm a bit nuts but other than that, most others seem to at least try and understand my hobby.  Many of them are in awe of my displays and ask lots of questions :)

I don't actively shout about it, but there all in the pony room, and thats some times a guest room (though my friends take the mic about staying in there over night like all the ponies will come alive and eat them!)

Its something I enjoy, and TBH the house is full for ponies, MH dolls, my star trek and star wars stuff and more! I have so much stuff i don't think anyone is surprised too much.... Until they go in the pony room lol its a little overwhelming in there i suppose...

Oh everybody know I'm a collector.  I have ponies at work.  My family and friends get me ponies for birthdays and Christmas and will ask which ponies I've gotten recently or what customs I'm working on.  And my friends are always telling other people about the ponies.  My Roomy (who's come with me to numerous MLP Fairs) goes to a lot of sci fi cons and she has other people looking out for ponies for me.

We also host an annual party around Christmas time and the guests look forward to seeing the Pony Room Xmas display every year.  :P

Wow lol - I am a bit shocked but totally understand too, new relationships may need a bit of time before we dump all our strange & interesting quirks onto new partner :) good luck with it anyhow hun!

I'm sure it'll go fine. :) We are so much more then our toy collections. Mine still hasn't seen the entire collection. He saw some of the pictures I had up on facebook of some of my ponies back when we were friends. Before we started dating, he would go into thrift shops and look for ponies for me. (The man ended up finding a perfect TAF baby in a bag at VV). He knows my collection is massive- I still have to have it sent here though. His only comment "the next house needs to have a room for your ponies".

This is a super interesting thread, reading how everyone expresses (or doesn't) their collection. I'm a bit of an inbetween myself, because I don't outwardly talk about it or anything but there is a huge bookshelf in my room full of ponies so they're hard to miss if you go in there. I started collecting in high school and back then it was definitely something I hid. My closest friends knew of course, some even collected with me for a bit.

Now that I'm older I certainly don't care what people think anymore, haha. Most new friends and people who see my collection think it's the coolest thing. One guy friend told me he even respects me more for it XD
And with a boyfriend it's tough, but I was very open with my boyfriend about it. He doesn't like them personally (like he wouldn't collect or anything), but he's fine with my collection because it makes me happy and that makes him happy. He's also kind enough to watch MLP:FiM with me! Applejack and Fluttershy are his favorites, hee hee.

I haven`t run into too many problems. I like showing off my collection, I just wish I had more people to show them to. Those who do see it often respond positively. A few find it a bit overwhelming but they aren`t collectors so they don`t understand why so many. But they are still positive. When I was giving instructions to my house cleaners about how to handle my collection room, they found all the ponies to be cute. Most of my boyfriends have been supportive. In fact, my current boyfriend`s best friend is getting ready to build me a custom shelf just for my ponies so that I can properly display them and he`s shown some consideration about the condition of the dolls and how they should be displayed. My boyfriend will watch the FiM cartoons with me if he happens to be present when I have them on and hes told people that the show is funny.

The trick will be to get my ponies to share room with my first love: Sonic the Hedgehog. I have a mass collection of that, too.

I`m in the process of reviving my MLP site to make it possible for me to properly display my collection online (and allow others to share theirs, too).

I haven't told many friends, mainly the ones that know have been to my house at some point (rather few). I've posted one or two pics on Facebook of G4s, but yeah I don't really talk about it...
