selling pokemon cards?
« on: February 16, 2012, 11:46:08 AM »
I'm getting rid of my old collection, and I have no idea where to start. Anyone on here have success selling Pokemon cards? (A big lot on ebay? one by one through a forum? selling them at a garage sale?)
I know they aren't worth that much anymore, and honestly I just want a few bucks. I'm not expecting to retire with my cards. I just want to hear how you guys parted with your cards~

Are they all old? I'm interested in any Ponytas (although I think I may have most of them) or Shinxes. I use them as tokens in my elf MtG deck :3

Commons and uncommons should be easy to sell as a bulk lot, same as things like trainers and energy. I know there's some holos from the first sets that are sought after, so you might want to check their value.

It'd be good to identify all the cards though for buyers to get more interest. Bulbapedia is a good place to start - just by searching "<card name> tcg", going to that article and checking all the sets that card was in, looking at the artwork and symbol will usually identify them :)

I wish you luck! I ended up getting stuck with all my old Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards. I tried selling them to a local trading card shop before and they wouldn't even take the time to look at what I had and said they weren't buying..

Back in the day, my brother and I used to make so much money selling Pokemon cards. We'd enter these tournaments that used to be every Saturday at this comic book store I worked at for a while. It only cost $2 to enter, and we'd walk away with a bunch of booster packs and Pokemon figures as prizes. We'd actually bring a bunch of our friends with us that weren't really interested in collecting but would play using decks my brother built and we'd walk away with all the prizes.

A few years ago my son got into Pokemon cards, and we were disappointed to find that the new cards had changed the rules and you couldn't use both old and new cards in a deck.

Oh, how strange that they would change the rules like that :(  We have a bunch of the old ones still from when my brother and I were into it back int he day.  Would have been nice to use them again <3

I don't think that means they're worthless. A lot of people collect them either just to play, or just for nostalgic reasons (like me!).

You can use SOME old cards, like energy and certain trainer cards that have been reprinted. Most others you can't :(

Thanks for posting this! I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I was thinking the other day that I need to get rid of my collection. I will be watching this thread for more information!

Does anyone have or know of a pricing guide?
Thanks to calico star for my avatar!
