Making black Pony Wear not stain?
« on: April 18, 2014, 10:04:05 AM »
I have a G3 Abra-ca-dabra with her witch costume which I really want to display on her.  However, she already has some mild staining from her outfit.  I was wondering if anyone had any tricks that might help prevent the dye from staining the pony.

Well, some of my dolls have come wrapped in plastic to protect them from their own clothes.  I bet that would work.

Do you think maybe having a protective layer of plastic wrap or paper might work then?

If you're not afraid to wash it, soak it for a while in white vinegar, just enough to cover it completely. Then run it under cold water. Repeat a couple dozen times (the water should be running completely clear by the time you're done). The vinegar will set the dye into the fabric and greatly reduce, if not eliminate staining.

You can also buy some cheap undyed fabric (like muslin) and wrap strips of it around your pony where the staining is occurring, or line the parts of the outfit with it. That creates a barrier between the plastic and the fabric so the color won't bleed onto the pony itself. c:

I gave it a vinegar soak and washed it.  There wasn't any dye in the water after the first time, so does that mean I'm done?

Did the color bleed and turn the vinegar darker before you took it out? (Sorry, I should have mentioned that before!) If it did and it's washing clean, then I think you should be all right!

Soak in cold water and vinegar for 12 hours - add salt to the mix - and then allow to soak for another 12 hours. That should make the material colour fast. It can depend a little on the material itself. But make sure to rinse and repeat as required.

Okay then, I'm resoaking it it vinegar now.  Is it okay if I weigh the cloth down with something so it doesn't float to the surface?

If its soaked through, even if it sits on the surface the material will still be getting what it needs :) There is no harm in using something to hold the material down but make sure whatever you use is not going to stain the water of course and also adjust it on the cloth so that every surface is exposed at some point.

The cloth is done~  It's dried off and is finally back in Abra-ca-dabra!  Thanks for the pointers everybody!

Making your doll/pony clothing color-fast with vinegar is a great idea, but keep in mind that sometimes the color can still transfer, especially if your doll/pony is white (or resin)
