Well, some of my dolls have come wrapped in plastic to protect them from their own clothes. I bet that would work.
If you're not afraid to wash it, soak it for a while in white vinegar, just enough to cover it completely. Then run it under cold water. Repeat a couple dozen times (the water should be running completely clear by the time you're done). The vinegar will set the dye into the fabric and greatly reduce, if not eliminate staining. You can also buy some cheap undyed fabric (like muslin) and wrap strips of it around your pony where the staining is occurring, or line the parts of the outfit with it. That creates a barrier between the plastic and the fabric so the color won't bleed onto the pony itself. c:
I gave it a vinegar soak and washed it. There wasn't any dye in the water after the first time, so does that mean I'm done?
If its soaked through, even if it sits on the surface the material will still be getting what it needs There is no harm in using something to hold the material down but make sure whatever you use is not going to stain the water of course and also adjust it on the cloth so that every surface is exposed at some point.
