The only pointer I have - get a machine, then pray.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and I have no idea which way it's going to go until the machine is already humming away.  And if there IS a problem, I guarantee it will be three stitches from the end and will bork the whole thing.   :P

I use dolphinwing's patterns, altered a bit.  I have designed a few of my own hair styles though, and I will either make my own embroidery designs or buy them already digitized.   

She is 9ish inches tall at the highest point of her forelock.  :)  Colts are the slightest bit larger but I have not had occasion to use that pattern yet so I can't give an exact measurement.
