Customs / Re: n00b question about clay
« on: February 24, 2018, 08:56:51 AM »
Although I've never tried baking a pony, when polymer clay was my go-to for sculpting, I would bake at the lowest temperature my oven would allow, for a longer period of time. It takes more patience and you might need to watch it for longer, but that helps prevent cracking, and I imagine would be better for the pony as well. It might be good to do a test pony you're not attached to, watch it super close, and from there determine if you're comfortable going this route.

If you end up feeling too nervous about putting something like that in the oven, there's also the option of an epoxy clay such as "Magic Sculpt." It's about the same price range as Sculpey, a little more sturdy, and you can skip the oven all together.

Oh my, these are both wonderful! The Ghost of Christmas Present is instantly recognizable, the hair must have been a blast to add :D

Thanks everyone! I'm working on and almost done with a few more, at some point I'll get pictures of them as well. Also, I'll be posting these ones to ebay soon!

Thank you all for the kind words, it’s much appreciated! I’m glad people are getting a kick out of the ideas as much as I am, I was smiling the whole time these guys were being made, haha!

The Sweetheart Sister makes for a good llama pose too.  ^.^
Right?! That was my first thought when I got her, they’re so elegant that they work well for the lankier animals. Plus her expression totally fits the elite/classy theme. :D

And we need more conspiracy ponies.
Yes please! Oh, and there are so many to work with out there, this could be a fun series.

Yes, and prices! A few people have asked, (and being a late night before sleep post, of course that’s the bit of info I space ).

Here we go:
-Amanita: $95
-Spitfire Goat: $65
-Lotus: $75
-Somnus Goat: $155
-Illaminati: $150

Plus around 10-15 shipping US (I’ll need to double check those prices soon, ponies are pretty light, but I know a few of these are going to need to be extra protected because of the sculpted bits).

Customs / New Customs - Unicorns, goats, and a llama
« on: December 11, 2017, 11:23:35 PM »
Greetings!

Recently I finished a bunch of customs which I’ve been meaning to finish for years now. A friend of mine asked if I could do a couple more goat ponies for her, which is what spurred me on to finishing these ones, but from the sounds of it, she has a couple of specific bases already in store for me. Which means, all of these are looking for new homes! I’d like to share them here first, before posting them to ebay.

Somnus - Goat Pony of Sleep
I’m really happy with how this guy turned out! I just need to figure out what to do with manes/tails/beards on the goats. Goat pony V1 just had a mohawk mane, but I’m finding that the new hair is so beautiful, I kind of want to give them -at least- luxurious beards.

Amanita the Unicorn
She’s my favorite of the bunch, I will be ok if she does not find a home and “accidentally” finds her way into my personal collection. ;) Yup, that is in fact the Mario mushroom that she is based off of, it’s a gorgeous species! I worked on her while listening to a podcast on mycology, so the love of fungus is definitely imbedded in her, haha!

Blue Lotus
Another unicorn, but this time, for the love of blue!

Spirtfire the Goat Pony
One that came with marks and such, so I thought I’d see what I could do with getting a different body color. I’m not fond of doing the full body paint, (this one will definitely need to be treated with care), but it was good to get an idea of what it’s like to work with. Also, more experimentation with goat mane/tails. What do you guys think? I’m thinking the eyes, beard, and horns are enough to read as “goat”.

Illaminati
My group of buddies like to make jokes about the Illuminati, and one of those friends also happens to be into MLP. I haven’t shown him yet, but he will be shown soon! She was another one who was in rough shape, so she was great for getting a feel for re-sculpting. I’m also getting an idea about how to do hair styles on ponies. I’ve no idea what I’m doing, but being a llama, she definitely needed a cool curly hair style!

Several more are on the way! These are sculpted with Magic Sculpt and painted/sealed in acrylic. The horns are sculpted over armature which is rigged pretty firmly in the pony, so they’re pretty solid (I still wouldn’t suggest throwing them across the room, haha).

Feel free to PM me if you’re interested in one! Here are the prices I have in mind:
-Amanita: $95
-Spitfire Goat: $65
-Lotus: $75
-Somnus Goat: $155
-Illaminati: $150

Plus around 10-15 shipping US. Again, they’re not officially up for sale yet, but I’m not opposed to parting with any of these, and would love to gauge interest in customs!

Customs / Re: Opinions on customizing not so baity
« on: December 11, 2017, 09:49:01 PM »
Yep, I agree with the comments here! These were created to bring joy to people, and if this would bring you joy, I don’t think anyone would stop you. If you’re not feeling quite right about customizing a non-bait, that’s a great idea to sell that one and keep your eyes out for the same pose, but in bait condition. It might take longer, but being a G1, there’s got to be one out there like that. It might help settle the debate in your own mind, plus you’d be reviving a pony. :)

I really wish that blanks of each pose were available for customization. I really feel that is an untapped market.

Yes! That would fantastic! Hasbro, being a larger company, are going to go after what reaches the biggest audience, so maybe they see customization as too small an audience? If they did the marketing right though, I could see this as a way to unite the audiences over multiple generations. Releasing some of the most popular poses from G1 as a “customize your own”… that would be a huge hat tip to the people who have supported them for a long while now while letting the really little kids in on fun art projects! An “every pose” thing would be even more amazing, although unfortunately I’m not sure a big company would want to pour effort into setting up something like that. Still, it’s a worthwhile wish to put out there!

Just gorgeous! I love how warm all the colors are, it fits the theme so well :D

I used to admire your lovely art on PonyIsland, it's good to see that you're still actively creating. Welcome to the Arena and I look forward to seeing some of your work!

I still remember PonyIsland, such a fun place! Yep, still creating, it's in my blood, haha. I'm looking forward to sharing :)

Ah, you do such wonderful work! Actually, I think just recently I stumbled across some of your customs on DA, that's awesome to see that you're still taking commissions. I have a friend who might be interested, I'll be talking to her this weekend and will for sure show your work to her :)

Introductions / Greetings!

Thank you for accepting me onto the forums!

My name is Crystal (online I go by Alightir, Winter, or Wintersoul, I’m cool with going by any of these names). When I was about four or five, I got my first pony (Daisy Sweet, one of those scented G1 ponies), and from there I had a taste for collecting wonderfully sculpted toys (mostly My Littlest Pet Shop, various animal figurines, and Breyers, but also a few more MLP). A taste for creative collectibles is a big factor in my career choice, and I’ve been lucky to become an illustrator/sculptor in my adult life. Now, I get to create critters for others to collect, just like I did as a kid! Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to sell my work at various conventions (such as comic cons), so I still enjoy this creative world, and I can say that’s my normal day job, haha! ;)

The MLP collection is currently one whole pony! (Scratch that, she’s being re-haired… two-thirds of a pony?) I gave most of my childhood collection to my niece because I thought it would be fun if she had a chance to enjoy them as much as I did. Again, that’s what sparked my creativity, who knows what they’ll spark in her! The one I kept back for myself was Baby North Star. She was by far my favorite (the Sweetheart Sister Twinkler was a close second). Part of being a favorite meant often going in water, so… yeah… that’s why she’s being re-haired. While G1 has the most memories attached to it, I do enjoy the looks of G3 and G4, so on the chance that I do get back to collecting, I’ll probably be on the lookout for better conditions of my old collection and possibly be interested in G3s as well.

Why join the forums with such a small collection? Well, I’m interested in jumping into the world of customization! That started a couple of years ago. Several of us in my circle of friends enjoy MLP, meanwhile several others can’t stand it. I wanted to get a gift for a close friend poking fun at that pet peeve, while still making the gift something that would bring a smile and that he would want to keep. For him, ponies = no… but goats… goats are all good! I struck out to find a good bait pony, and using my sculpting skills, Goat-pony was born. (Yes, he loved it, and Goat-pony is still a beloved part of their family, haha!).

Customs are something I’d still love to make more of. The idea of taking a pony which was once loved, (even so much so that restoring them is no longer an option), and giving them a new theme and new way to be loved sounds like a blast! I’m currently working on a batch of new goat-ponies and unicorns with the themes of some of my other passions in life such as dreaming, plants, and the esoteric. If all of you don’t mind, I’d love to share some of these upcoming creations, (maybe even find them homes once they’re finished!).

Aside from all of that, just going through the introductions, I’m enjoying seeing all these collections from around the world. Already this looks like a fun forum to browse during down time. Thanks for reading, hope to see all of you around!
