Which are the long-haired Year 3 ponies?
« on: December 18, 2015, 06:11:19 PM »
I know there were a few (four?) re-releases in Year 3 of G1, but I don't recall who they were, other than Apple Jack (I just discovered that I have one!) and maybe Medley?  Who knows which ones they are?  Is there any difference in value between them and the regular release (Year 1) of the ponies?

Good question!

These are they. Although technically it's not 'long hair' so much as curly hair. This is the year for curly hair to be introduced for the first time. Over here, though our Bow Tie is a different pose, she often turns up loose with "long hair" if her curls have dropped out. If you look as well at a year 3 card, Firefly and Medley's art has been altered to show curls. (The same happened in reverse on the UK card for Cherries Jubilee, when she went from a curly to a straight release in 1986)

Admittedly, of these Applejack seems to be the least actually "curly" though. I had one MOC once where the hair was just folded over in the package, an my loose one only has a slight wave. With the others, though, I've seen them all with proper factory curl, so I think it's intended that way. They tend to have the right texture of hair for curls.

I love posting this pic as this question comes up often.
They're noticeably longer haired. (Bowtie didn't have any curl left, so I question if he hair had actual curl to begin with and as you can see doesn't hold curl well...)

Thanks, everyone.  :)  My Apple Jack's mane has a bit of curl left in it, particularly at the end, so I left it alone (other than a bit of conditioner) when I was cleaning her up.  Her tail was just frizz, though, so I ended up using a flat iron on it and curling it around her leg.  I was just surprised to realize that she was a different version from the "regular" Apple Jack that I already had.  :)

The price of the longer hair versions does tend to be higher than the shorter hair versions - mainly because they are slightly harder to find. With Bow Tie and AJ its normally only a few $ more; with Medley and Firefly its a bigger jump perhaps $5+ more on the longer hair versions.
