Display shelves/racks ?
« on: March 28, 2012, 02:56:19 PM »
Wasn't really sure where to post this, so I hope this spot is acceptable! If not, I'm sorry. :P

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew any good sites, or had any blue prints themselves, for making home-made display shelves/racks ? My boyfriend is pretty handy with wood, and his father has a mini workshop, so he said he'd be happy to make me a display.. thing, if I could find him good instructions.

I always see beautiful displays here over on the brag area, so I was hoping some of you might have a good source or two :] .

Thanks in advance!

I just bought a wooden CD "bookcase" for ours.  That's the best way to describe it.  Adjustable shelves, but not as deep as a regular bookshelf.  Babies on one, FS on a bigger one, that sort of thing.

These are great, but I/we're pretty poor right now, but we have a lot of excess wood stuffs laying about, which is why I'm trying to find some blueprints or directions for him to follow and modify :].

Thank you though.

Mine are wood boards hung by using the metal channel rods.

You can buy everything at lowes or Home Depo. You can buy the boards and then you use a jig saw to round the edge. You can either buy the fancy white boards they have in the closet organization section or you can buy wooden boards and stain them.

I've done both options. My ponies have wood stained boards since we have wood paneling in the house. My craft garage has the fancy white boards since the walls are painted - I have my doll collection displayed there.

You can buy the rods in the same section they have the closet organization things in. You'll need screws to put them up and someone who knows how to hang them on the wall. Then you buy the little hooks that you stick in the channel rod, depending on how many shelves you want and how long your shelf is will depend on how many hooks you need. They both have the white and think dark metal hooks. You can basicly decide what you like better to fit your decor.

There are others on the other side of the room...and there is a whole cabinet of custom bates out in the garage. Actually I couldn't get the whole wall in the shot :p

That's pretty impressive, I must say. I love the idea of having so many on just one wall! They look so awesome. :)
I don't think I can free up an entire wall for my ponies, though. Not to mention it would make some end up within kitty reach so she'd probably chew on them. XD

The shelving isn't hard to put up and you can cut the boards as long or short as you want. So say you had a corner between maybe a closet door and a dresser or something like that you could do short shelves as well Or you can also do a shelf at the top of the room that runs above a window, etc. The channel rod and little hook hangers give you the option of being creative. You can also cut the metal channel rods shorter because we had to do that in the garage to go above floor cabinets.

You can also make your shelves further apart as well. So say you had a doll collection, you could do 15" between some shelves and then others you could do 6" between. Giving you the option of displaying different things on the same wall, etc.

I just wanted to add if you are using stained wood you want to make sure it is good and sealed or put something between the wood and the ponies' feet. I've had cherry wood stain pony hooves reddish.

Dad built these for me. They are only 8" deep which is perfect depth for one single pony.

Here is one of the shelves I made myself:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I just used heavy duty screws to screw the top, bottom and sides together. then attached the shelves. I believe I used 1x4 wood. I then took 1x2 strips and nailed them to the back of the shelf so the ponies tails could hang down in the back. :)

And then because I hate to dust, I used some more 1x2 boards, metal corner brackets and three hinges and made a swinging door that I covered in plastic (they sell it at most craft stores and Walmarts) it was something like a dollar a yard. After it was on there for a few days and the wrinkles came out you can't even see the plastic unless a bright light is shining on it at an angle. I also attached weather stripping to the door. I never have to dust then and it seals in all the pony smell goodness. I love opening it up to rearrange them, it smells like a newly opened pony. :) Well at least a newly opened 80's pony. I don't know what they but in the plastic back then but they smelled so much better. LOL

All in all it was pretty easy to make.

Edit to add: That I cover all the wood pieces with self sticking vinyl contact/shelf paper before putting the shelf together. I've had regular wood stain the bottom of a ponies hooves before. I also use the same clear plastic that I used on the front, on the back of the shelf to protect the ponies from being in contact with the paint on the walls. :)
