Title: What Ponies Won You Over?
Post by: Leave a Whisper on September 29, 2018, 11:13:32 AM
Ponies are tricky lil buggers. Some we turn our noses up at may make us fall in love with the right picture, or seen IP. Who are the ones who made you go from Never to Now?

I wasn't keen on the flutterponies until I found one in person (which is always a catalyst to get me to actually collect them), but Rosedust's pose makes me forget how lumpy and weird they are. From the right angle, it just looks adorable! Rosedust in general is a beautiful pony, so she certainly helped to sway me.

A lot, but one that immediately comes to mind is G3/G3.5 Sweetie Belle. I was indifferent to having a pink and purple pony but the purple in her mane is actually three different shades! It's not easy to tell in pictures. Still far from my favourite, but I appreciate her more and I kinda wish they did more ponies like this instead of giving them one solid colour.

Twist 'n' Style Starsong wasn't my cup of tea at first, I just generally wasn't into G3.5 for a bit, but I saw her in a display of various toys in Manchester and she really is adorable! I've warmed up to G3.5 in general as well, they're a bit odd but very sweet.

I didn't like Gusty because of Crunch the Rockdog episode, but she grew on me in the end. Just got to fix her up and have her join her baby again.

I wasn’t a really big fan of the first uni poses (Moonie and Glory). But after I got Glory and saw her in person she really swayed me into not only liking her but most of the ponies in that pose. The same with Firefly actually- I never liked her pose as a kid, but now it is my fav pegasus pose.

If you don't like them you can send them to me :D :D :D All lovely unicorns and pegasus ponies to me :D:D

I am a bit of a completionist so didn't really have any ponies I didn't want to buy. Maybe in terms of ones I like more from seeing them, though - Springy. I saw a really bad photo of a collection in a pony comic as a kid where a girl had some of these weird stripy ponies and they seemed ugly to me back then. Then when my first trade partner came to the UK in April 1998, she actually brought Springy along with all the other stuff she brought to trade. It was a gift for her granddaughter who lived in the UK at that time.

After I saw her in person, I really liked her :) So I'm going to say Springy.

Also, the SS ponies - but that more for not understanding really what they were, as So Soft was a term used for plush over here...

Wigwam-I'm not a fan of orange, but I did like his unique symbol. Still it took me quite a while for me to realize I simply had to have one.

Minty-Her pose turned me away, and the ones I saw on ebay looked dingy and bleh. Even brand new I just couldn't get into her. But getting the Loyal Subjects one turned me around! Her colors are lovely. Reminds me of Irish Spring soap bars for some reason. XD

Curlylocks-She is not a pony, I would have picked out on my own. It took my boyfriend pestering me into buying her. I'm really glad he did, she's quite cute.

Paradise-I liked her character, but thought that hair color was kinda ugly. I have no idea what possessed me to buy her, but I'm glad I did. I now think her hair is a cool color and contrasts so well with her white body.

Hula Hula-I thought this set was tacky and she was such an awful color. Then I saw this picture on eBay of her in good lighting and had to have her. I even like her eye shadow, whereas I didn't before. Fallen in love with this whole set. I'm searching for one of her set mates now.

Pretzel-I bought her for my daughter when they had the pearly two packs in Walmart. She decided she didn't want her after I'd already paid, which made me mad. I'm not a fan of her color combo, but little by little she won me over. Her pink hair is a very lovely shade. It startled me when I realized her eyes were red and not dark pink. Her pretzel symbol had a bit of detail to it. She'll never be a favorite, but I like her now.

Yum Yum-I didn't think the chartreuse hair went with her pastel purple. I even thought she was ugly. But after much debate with helpful arena members, she became my very first flutter. I was still a bit doubtful, but once she came outta that box, it was instant love!

Mer-Fluttershy-I don't like or dislike Fluttershy. She just never blipped on my radar, despite liking yellow n pink ponies. Plus the reboot pose is dreadful. But I kept her seeing her, and considering her. Finally I bought her. Her hair is a lovely shade of pink and she looks really good pearlized. I hafta say, she's kinda charming.

The Twinkle Eye ponies.  I did not like how they looked, but when I saw one in person I changed my mind lol.  Sme with the sparkle ones.  I did not care how they looked in photos, but they slowly won me over.  Then I saw one in person and now they'r among my favorites.

Also the G2s.

Red Roses, the evil little rustpile that started this all. I didn't even like ponies before having bought her. And now I'm here, two years later with about 50 ponies...
Another one is piggy ponies. I don't think I would care a little bit for them if it wasn't for finding Azul Celeste and having her beg love next to me for so long, she is currently too sitting in front of my computer screen.

Definitely the perfume puff set. I thought they were the most ridiculous looking things. Then I bought one (Sweet Lily) as I like the pose and just got curious. There was no turning back, lol!

Dance n Prance are another example of a gimmicky set that I thought I'd never have in my herd. That changed, too

Every time I come across a new pony or gimmick I don't like much on the internet, it ends up growing on me when I have them in real life. Seriously, I didn't like BBEs much, nor TEs, nor the Tootsie pose and so on.... Now I like them, for some reason. BBEs are cute to me now, TEs look less like aliens now, Tootsie pose is "okay to nice",... Firefly pose is still trying hard though, it has it ups and downs, depends on my mood. I'm not too fond of the Wingers and I'm all over the Flutters. But again, I don't have a winger yet so I'm in a "wait and see" mode, I really can't have a fixed opinion. Am I too versatile or something ? I guess it's just because I don't have a too strong of an opinion regarding pony poses and gimmick. In a way, I'm happy I changed my mind, that's more ponies to love ! :D My wallet and my room space on the other hand are looking at me funny.

SHS Dainty and Flowerburst. I got them in a lot and they didn't attract any interest from buyers until I'd had them for a year. I was going to give Dainty to a friend along with some g3 accessoriesthat made her look like a prom queen, but then I liked how she looked myself,  and by that time Flowerburst had grown on me as well. I made up the price for the lot easily so I wasn't in a rush to sell them.

In the beginning of my MLP collecting, like really early, just a couple months in back when I first got into it in 2011, I wasn't really huge on the 3.5s, but that last for really only a couple months and it didn't take me long to love them too. Now I think they're super cute and my only gripe with them is that it's all Core 7.

Can't really think of anything else, I've kind of always been the type of collector where there are no ponies where I look at them and think "I don't want her in my collection". I've got ones that are actively on my wishlist, and ones that aren't but I've never really had any that I would actually pass up (hence why I vote "want her/him" on every POTD, doesn't necessarily mean the pony is on my active wishlist, but there's none I would ever choose "pass" for), I like them all to the extent that I would at least add them to my collection if I came across them thrifting or in a lot online with other ponies I want.

The closest thing I can really think of is for years, like up until about a year ago, I wasn't interested at all in fakies. I'd end up with some in thrift bags and I would just donate them back to the thrift stores, but last October (?) I started collecting them. It's become fun for me to see how other companies attempt to cash in on MLP's popularity through their own colorful pony toys. Some do it decently, and others are really silly and questionable looking and that makes them fun to collect in their own right. And there are fakies I just genuinely love as their own thing, like Lanards. Most fakies I just end up with via thrifting and I keep them, but Lanards I now actively search for and collect.

I never cared for the G3s much and then I walked past Kiwi Tart. I actually walked past her several times over a couple of weeks before I finally bought her. It was like opening a flood gate and suddenly I had several G3s.

For me it was the So Soft ponies. In photo's I could not understand them at all: that flocking just seemed to dull their beautiful vibrant colours. And then I started to get a couple in lots with other ponies that I wanted. As you do. But when I felt that lovely soft flocking I was hooked as I am quite a tactile person  :)

Yes to the G2s! I didn't like them for a while because I wondered why they made them look like doughy giraffes when they could have worked with the Sweetheart Sister mould instead.
But the G2 lore and designs really grew on me.

G1 Beach Ball - I had no interested in Beachball until I got one for a friend. She was so pretty in person that I almost didn't send Beachball to her new home

This year a friend was selling her ponies and one of those ponies was Beachball. When I saw she was for sale I agreed to buy her from my friend.

The G4 Movie baby sea ponies-I thought one would be enough but soon I needed two. I chose Sea Poppy and Lilly Drop and had a lot of fun taking silly pictures of them and adding funny dialogue. Well two sea ponies turned in to a set of 16(8 MOC and 8 open)

G4 Guardian of Harmony Twlight Sparkle- I wasn't really interestied in her or her Changeling opponent until I saw Thorax in the cartoon and decided that her Changeling was the closet Hasbro would come to releasing Thorax.

I'm sure there are many more but that's all I can think of right now. :)

For me it was G1 sea ponies. As a child I thought they looked so awkward not being able to stand on their own. They couldn't play in any of the play sets or wear the clothes (and I was a little too old for bath toys). They also only had one small section of hair to brush which I thought was boring.

Today as an adult I have Wavedancer, who is very lovely in her clam shell. I do like having her on display but I still think that series wasn't as much fun as the others.

  Haha doughy giraffes!  Doughy giraffes with short necks!  But I agree about the SHS molds. But if they’d used them they may as well have just had updated G1 ponies.    But their molds have grown on me since 10 years ago.

Princess ponies - I didn’t like 3D symbols at all for years, and I especially didn’t like the metallic princess symbols. They looked too ‘stuck on’ for me. But I ended up with Royal Blue and Primrose in a lot and decided they weren’t terrible. Now I’m only missing Taffeta. (But I still don’t really like their symbols).

Banana Surprise - I feel like she’s hard to photograph well or something. It wasn’t until I saw her in person that I really liked her.

Sparkle / glow n show - I thought they were properly see through, like the She-Ra horses, and I don’t like that because you can see all the joints and the hair inside. When I saw them in person and realized they weren’t like that, then I really liked them.

Forsythia-I'm not big on pink ponies with yellow hair. But my daughter has her and I think she's just gorgeous.

Rarity-I didn't like or dislike her. The heart symbol is kinda boring and pink with rainbow hair, doesn't interest me. But I've seen some very pretty examples of her on ebay, and she's now on my wishlist.

Brights Brightly-I'm not entirely won over, because I'm always on the fence about her. But I'm going to buy her and see how I like her.

Thistle Whistle-Turned my nose up for a while. Until I saw A Very Minty Christmas, and my daughter got one in a trade. I fell in love. She's got a fun personality, and it's not often you see a pony with primary colors. She's so cute!

Island Delight-I thought she was dull, until my daughter got one. I didn't realize how dark a purple she is. She's such a beautiful pony!

Lulu Luck-Her colors are gentle, and a bit unusual. I've decided to try to add her to my collection.

I wanted to like G3s, but for some reason I just didn't. It's like they were just not as cool as the ponies I grew up with.

The ONLY exception was Citrus Sweetheart. I instantly fell in love with her. She's just so perfect in every way. She's the only G3 I've owned (Although she no longer fits in my current collection).

Speedy, for sure! I really didnt like her colour in pictures, as I thought it looked really dull (and I've never been huge on orange - that has changed tho, it's actually a favourite colour now, in the right setting!) and almost dusty. SHe was the last TE I needed to complete my set though, so I did get her. And when she arrived, I realized she's actually beautiful in person. Now, the name, on the other hand...

Sunlight is another one that was just boring to me. When I got mine, it was instant love. :lovey:

I don't really want to admit this, but I bought a Chocolate Chip/Coco Berry at Ponycon.

So I don't like Sundae Best ponies. My dislike of them is such that some years back when I had extras I ended up giving them away to whoever would take them. I really only have them for completion and some of them smell horrible. In fact, I was even reminded of that fact at Ponycon by one of the people I sent a Banana Surprise to xD.

And I really don't like Chocolate Chip's scent. I have said before that it's a pony weapon of mass destruction and a crate full of that pony would be enough to make anyone surrender. It is the pony scent I hate most bar none (at least in G1, I had to sell a couple of G3 because their scents were so horrible but I can't do that to G1 ><)

But I bought one at Ponycon.

Why?

Because she was really pretty O.o. She's the HK version (my one is China) and this one has much nicer pink and blue shades, with no yellowing or fading of either. And most importantly, her scent has almost entirely faded. Which means that now I can appreciate her for the colour pretty without needing to wear a gas mask to go near her.

So I guess that means that this Chocolate Chip won me over. Even though I am so prejudiced against this set...

Like many others, at first I didn't like the G2 ponies at all.  They were so different it was just not right.  But I bought a few just for the experience of opening a brand new pony again.  (Something I thought I'd never have a chance to do.  3 more generations + repos later boy was I wrong!)  I wasn't going to collect them.  I think it was Petal Blossom who won me over.  I remember just holding her and looking at her, and the little details and her specific shades of body and hair made me really like her!  So then I collected them.

And recently I've had a renewed interest in them as well because when I showed my boyfriend my pony collection he thought the G2s were the cutest.  It's made me appreciate them more from a fresh perspective.  Seeing them the way he sees them, not as someone who grew up with G1 so will forever compare them to the first ponies but as someone just looking at a bunch of colorful toy horses with no prior biases and saying "yup, those are cute!"

I was totally not into G4 at first, wasn't even going to buy a single one.  Then when I bought a bunch of G1 ponies from one particular eBay seller they threw in an extra - a little G4 book.  I saw Rainbow Dash on the cover and remembered her from G3.  I had always really liked her name.  I saw that she had an updated symbol, and I thought it looked really cool and creative.  Much more unique than her G3 counterpart.  It was a very slow gradual process from then, but Rainbow Dash slowly worked her way into my brain.  I bought the Ty plushie of her on a whim, then got Applejack since she was so close to her G1 ancestor, who had always been one of my favorites.  Then I decided I'd just collect the Ty plushie set.  But slowly, they still kept working their way in further.  Then I got the Rainbow Dash and Applejack brushables.  I was just gonna have those two.  .... Yeah right.  You all know how that goes.  It wasn't long till I was totally hooked.  Now I have a growing collection of G4's along with all the other generations.  :)

I wasn't a fan of Big Brother or Daddy ponies.  Am not honestly sure why, maybe because I never had or saw any when I was little?  For some irrational reason though I didn't like them at first.  But then I bought Daddy Celebrations, and when I unpacked him from his bubble wrap I fell instantly in love.  Absolutely converted me on the spot.

G3s in general, and SLH Rainbow Flash in particular. We got a not-so-gently used Rainbow at a thrift store, and I spent hours getting her to look reasonable. She's missing her crown and accessories, but after working with her for such a long period of time, I've come to appreciate the G3s a lot more, and have had a lot more of them join the collection.

Sunny Rays.  When her assortment came out she was the pony I was least excited about.  Yellow's not a color that moves me for the most part, but then I found her at K-Mart and she instantly became my favorite of her whole release (over Trixie Lulamooon, Lyra Heartstrings, & Cherry Berry).  She's gorgeous in person!
