Pony Corral / Re: Could g5 be the potential downfall of mlp?

I don't think it's a brand killer, but it's certainly its low point.

A well thought-out reboot with quality products and mlp is back on track IMO.

I give G5 one more year before the plug is pulled.

G1 themed cosmetics line announced:
https://www.anbmedia.com/news/2024/05/hasbro-my-little-pony-beauty-creations-las-vegas-licensing-expo-2024/
It features art of numerous G1 characters on the packages.

Awesome! I don't know the brand so I'm a little confused on the target market; is this a makeup for kids? The packaging style sure seems geared towards kids I'd say.

Apparently I'm assuming Hasbroken licensed out gen 4 characters to a bunch of places in hopes of milking out more cash from FiM fans. There is only some many ways they can do this and yeah it's getting old...

Maybe their idea is to keep G4 going for the adult fanbase so that they can keep G5 detached from them and geared towards kids?

It is quite impressive that G4 figures continue to come out after all that time. Must still be a big enough market for it.

I'm also wondering why everyone is wearing a costume except for Applejack, Cotton Candy, Glory and Heartthorb.  Are they not invited, or did they forget it was a costume party like Bowtie in that UK ponywear ad?
Ponyfan

Applejack is wearing her birthday suit
Cotton Candy decided to dress up as the emperor who has no clothes  :sheepish:
Posey brought flowers instead of a costume; she didn't read the invite :iconclap:
and "Heart Throb" is actually Firefly dressed up as Heart Throb

I think this is bigger than whatever is happening with pony, honestly, it's clearly across multiple lines. The quote doesn't even mention MLP as a main brand.

For sure.

This is just a wild guess of course, but maybe they invested too much too fast. Basic Fun has been expanding its portfolio quite a bit in a short time. And chapt.11 bankruptcy protection is basically a way to hold off creditors while they restructure their financials. Maybe they are betting on the new products to start bringing in money during the protective restructuring phase, allowing them to pay the creditors at a later date without any possible legal costs adding up the bill. Hope this makes sense.

Dang, that's no bueno.

Let's hope the restructuring works out just fine, or that they get bought out and continue operations under a new mother company.

This is quite surprising since only last year they invested in new toylines. Making all those little pets must have been quite the investment I think.

I still think they should set up an online store of their own. No need to get approval from retailers for, say, the flutters. They could incorporate a polling station and ask the public directly what they'd like to see. Direct to consumer is what I'd invest in after restructuring.

Let's hope all those jobs get saved!

It's been years since I first heard about the UK's origin story of twinkle eyes and it still haunts me today...

and technically he was not really Danny but an illusion (ditto Molly).

I have no words...
With the strange stories the UK comics had, it sounds like they had a Stephen King fan on their writers team.

This was a thing well before G4 or Lauren Faust thought of making it a thing. G3 was probably more aimed at girls, admitted. But G1 was a bit more neutral (in some and not all ways) and had a male following as well.

This is a nice touch! I wonder if this reaching out to the boys lead to Danny's introduction.

My first reaction was "Glory or Moondancer" but then I read on...  :lookround:

There is just something extra appealing about the unicorns with celestial symbols.

Anyway, you could go for Majesty? Maybe Gypsy?
Or you could just turn an earthling or a pegasus into a unicorn. Lord knows Hasbro has swapped species 'a couple of times'... Magic Star was a pegasus and a unicorn in the movie and the series. Sundance would make for a nice fit.

Pony Corral / Re: the main problem of the G5

Could very well be that stores just don't want to carry the products. Keep in mind that they *have to* buy a minimum quantity of products. Hasbro may be trying to get them in stores, but if their expectations are too high - because stores know better what sells and what doesn't - they might decide to just pass on most of the assortment.

I remember that being a bit of an issue even back in the days of G2. That line was quite popular in Europe, and still some stores eventually stopped carrying the brand. When I asked why they didn't have pony anymore, they said that Hasbro's minimum order requirement was way too much and that they wouldn't budge from it. I can definitely see that being an issue with G5 toys as well.

I'm very interested in learning about these behind-the-scenes bits of info. If anyone here who has worked in a toystore has more of these insights, do share them please  :)

Tbh, I don't really know anything about instagram. I've just grown a dislike for all social media, sadly enough. Maybe I should look into instagram; it's predominantly about sharing pictures, right? That would be a great start maybe, especially for the type of product I'm considering. But then again, the shop would also have a gallery of the actual use of the products, not just the mock-ups.

Actually, I am a fan of Etsy as a buyer! I've found some of the most wonderful indie clothes there! Pricey, but worth it for the originality. For some reason, I take much more care of those items than I do of the off the rack cheap stuff. And it supports a small business. But the thing with Etsy is that your shop gets lost in the masses on that platform. In general, I don't quite remember which shop I bought from; I think of it in terms of "buying from Etsy". And Etsy has kind of lost its key purpose, no? Now that the most basic of China products find their way to Etsy. I've heard a lot of indie shop owners complain about Etsy since it went public.

The point of my store would be to have a creative outlet and to make some money off of it. Not looking to make it my main source of income. The concept of POD is very enticing; no need for huge investments on my part. So the threshold is pretty low and inviting.

Is that baby Bowtie in the dragon suit, and baby Ember in the bubble bath?

Off Topic / Indie online shop?
« on: June 17, 2024, 05:07:56 AM »
I've been toying with the idea of setting up a small online shop for so long. I've looked into the basics of it, but I've never really committed to it. Every now and then the idea keeps creeping back in my mind though...

I think I found a fun evergreen product that doesn't break the bank at all and can reach all kinds of different target groups, (it would be POD, so the investment risk is next to nothing), and I'd go for Shopify as a shop platform (the cheapest plan is about 25$ a month which is certainly doable).

The big issue is that I don't have an online presence; I don't care for twitter or instagram. Social media has become such a turn off. But I guess that's crucial to get your stuff out there? Any alternatives to this? I think maybe DeviantArt could be a good one?

Anyway, question for you all: do you have one, is it worth it? Have you tried, but abandoned it? Do you have the same idea but you haven't gone through with it? If so, why not?
