Was Pinkie Pie's original name CUTIE PIE?
« on: January 21, 2023, 11:29:17 PM »
Completely overlooked a childhood Valentine card of mine that says "Hi, Cutie Pie™! Happy Valentine's Day!", with a picture of Pinkie Pie. The back of the card says Cutie Pie is a trademark of Hasbro, 2003. I can't remember if there's confirmation or any other sources anywhere on this being her actual name at any point, or if it was just speculation. Either way, not talked about much, it seems.

Ponytopia was the first site I checked for info, nope. eMLP seems to be down, not that it was easy to navigate in the first place. Obviously no info on MLW, and no info about it on Strawberry Reef. Even Googling doesn't come up with any immediate results, granted I haven't looked deep enough (lots of FiM speculation getting in the way)

Ironically, I don't see a trademark for CUTIE PIE from Hasbro. According to USPTO, the absolute earliest G3 trademark (not including ones for MY LITTLE PONY) was for RAINBOW DASH on 9/11/2002, "intended to cover the category of toy ponies and accessories for use therewith". The earliest for Pinkie Pie was PINKIE PIE, "intended to cover the categories of candy cake decorations, chewing gum and candy", dated 11/13/2002.

Was Pinkie Pie really originally CUTIE PIE, or do you think it was a mistake on American Greetings' (who made the Valentines) part?

Ooh that is interesting. Cutie Pie would definitely make more sense, since it's an actual saying...

I think the trademark was more meant for Pinkie Pie, and American Greetings may have misunderstood and thought her name was Cutie Pie.

Interesting!! I love weird obscure pony mysteries like this ^_^

I could see it going either way... It could be an early name for her, but it'd also be easy to mix up the two. Either seems plausible.

Do you have a pic of the card itself? :o

Yes! It's not like it's a rare and elusive piece of merchandise. I had them as a kid, and I was able to buy a brand new box on eBay at one point.

^ These are the backs of the group of cards I scanned, edited slightly to all face one direction. The Cutie Pie card is the first one in green.

I would guess that perhaps AG made a mistake and mashed up Cutie Mark and Pinkie Pie.

It would have made more sense, but I agree with the others, it was probably a mistake.

Thanks for the scans! :D

Oh I forgot about Cutie Marks XD This sounds very plausible to me. I can easily imagine whoever typed it up going "Uhhhh what was it.. cutie... pie... yeah Cutie Pie, that sounds about right..." and no one catching the error.

Let's not forget all the name shunting that happened around certain G1 sets during production. Perfectly possible the name changed along the way. The Snuzzle parlour did come with a tag saying Storm, even though he was long since Thundercloud by then.

That is super cool, another little name mix-up I didn't know about!

The Cutie Pie (tm) mystery is fascinating!! I'm leaning towards error, but you never know what discussions take place in very early toy development!

In context, "cutie pie" is what the pony / the card-giver is calling the card-receiver.  I think it's an intentional play on Pinkie Pie's name, but the trademark is an error on the card company's end.  It wouldn't really make sense for the card to call Pinkie Pie by name.

It's possible she was called Cutie Pie in early production, but when Hasbro first made their MLP website (before they even showed any pony pictures, other than black and white sketches) she was already listed as Pinkie Pie.
