Off Topic / Cool Rock/Gemstone Thread
« on: November 17, 2023, 10:49:15 PM »
Is anyone here into rockhounding or picking up cool rocks? If so I thought I’d start a thread for us to show off our finds! I’m a real amateur, I just picked up the hobby a few months ago when I got a rock tumbler. I don’t know what rocks are what or anything like that, I just pick up things I think look cool!

Here are a few of my favorites from my first batch of “wild” rocks I tumbled! :P All of these were found in various locations around town. Most are from a campground I stayed at, but some are actually just regular old landscape rocks.

Here’s another batch I have tumbling right now. These were all picked up at another campground. They’re in the final polishing stage now so hopefully they will be done soon!

I’d love to see any cool rocks or gemstones you all have! They can be store bought or wild found, anything goes here! :)

Customs / Recent Customs Dump! Halloween, fakies, and more!
« on: October 30, 2023, 11:58:59 PM »
I’ve been busy working on customs over the past few months and wanted to make a thread to show them off in one place! :)

The first custom is this bat pony I made for Peepersponies in the Halloween swap

Peepersponies mentioned they liked pastel green and pink in their interests so I wanted to challenge myself and try to create a non conventional color scheme. In order to make sure she stayed distinctly Halloween, I thought making her a bat pony would make it clear she was spooky even if her colors are softer. I looked at some inspiration photos for pastel Halloween aesthetics and overall I’m very pleased with how she turned out! I sculpted her wings, fluffy parts, and nose with apoxie sculpt.

Up next is another Halloween pony, Pumpkin Sparkle!

She is a custom version of the unrealeased G3 pony Ragamuffin posted over in the pony corral. :) I think the colors I selected are maybe a bit more purple than the colors in the image, but I’m still happy with her! I tried to stay as faithful to making her look like a classic G3 as I could! I also added a bit of sparkle to her symbol just because!

Up next is Tiki Time!

She was made from a dollar tree Pegasus fakie. She is actually a failed airbrush experiment…I got a cheap airbrush for makeup off Amazon hoping it might work for customs too, but the paint got clogged up pretty quick so I had to hand paint her instead. Lesson learned though, the really watery paint did go on much smoother than some of my other full body repaints! The sculpted flowers on her tail were also added out of necessity, I cut her tail hole WAY too big by accident, so I had to make it smaller again somehow.

Lastly we have baby s’more!

She started her life as a baby fifi that I was trying to restore…..she was severely discolored and had a mane cut so I had placed her outside to sun fade. Unfortunately, she feel in a hard to access spot while outside and by the time I got her out she had developed mold that gave her horrible purple splotches All over her body. :( Sorry baby fifi! I don’t like to give up on ponies though so I decided to turn her into a custom. She also was a failed experiment with the airbrush that I ended up handpaimting . The black color and cooler weather outside made me think of roasting s’mores and boom, that’s how she came to be!

Hope you enjoy! :)

Hey everyone!

I’m in a weird situation where I may or may not have fallen for a scam and wanted to see if anyone here had any insight on this.

On July 11th I got a confirmation email saying that I had successfully entered a sweepstakes for supporting small business on Amazon. This part is not alarming. I DID sign up for this sweepstakes, in fact I’m fairly certain I actually signed up directly on Amazon when I was browsing the small business products. Or at least I think air did….I can’t 100% remember but I generally never click on banners for sweepstakes unless I am sure it is tied to the website it is promoting.

Fast forward to today - I got an email in the morning saying I had won a $500 gift card. Even though I know I had in fact entered a sweepstakes I was still wary about clicking anything in the email. I cross referenced the email it was sent from an it DID match the email the registration confirmation came from. The email also contained my full name - I know from past phishing schemes Amazon emails should always use your name and not “valued guest” or anything similar, so this also gave me confidence it was legit. I decided to go ahead and click the link just to see where it brought me. The website was secure (it had the little lock icon by the URL) and when prompted to log into my Amazon account my device recognized it and pre filled all my info. The website didn’t ask for much info to claim my prize - just my email, address, phone number, and name. I figured heck….I give that info out on different websites all the time so I decided to take a gamble and submit it. I figured worst case scenario someone hacks my Amazon account and I just have to shut down the card tied to it.

Well, a couple hours later I got another email saying I had won a $100 gift card. Weird, because my luck is never THAT good, but not immediately alarming. It was possible to win multiple prizes in this sweepstakes. It came from the same email and went to the same website and everything, so I went ahead and entered my info again. This time though it asked me to fill out a W-9 form. They said since my collective prize was over $600 it was needed for taxes. After research it does seem like prizes over $600 need to be claimed for taxes, so this might be for real.

At this point I decided to look up this thing on Google to see if it was a scam. I have not found any conclusive results though. There was a thread on Reddit where someone had a similar situation to mine. Apparently they tried to reach out to Amazon to see if it was legit and the person they spoke to had no idea any such sweepstakes was occurring and thought it might be a scam. Some other commentators said they got a similar response from Amazon.

I’m not sure if this link is allowed - but this came from a savings website that promoted the promotion. You can see in the comments people are wary of their prizes as well and that no one seems to be getting a clear answer. I also find it suspicious that multiple people are apparently winning multiple prizes that always put them over the $600 mark….but then again maybe the people who won prizes below that aren’t worried and thus aren’t saying anything.
https://hip2save.com/deals/amazon-prime-day-sweepstakes/
There is also a Businesswire article discussing it here, which makes me think it COULD be legit
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220714005486/en/Prime-Day-2022-was-the-Biggest-Prime-Day-Event-Ever

At this point since it seems Amazon doesn’t seem to know anything I reached out directly to the company who was (allegedly) running the sweepstakes. Their website also seemed legit, so I sent them an email. I hope they will respond, but I don’t know. I will probably still contact Amazon tomorrow to be safe.

With all that being said, did any of you participate in this? If so, did you win any “prizes”? I’m so torn on if this is a scam or not. If it was the people running it were extremely convincing. I feel like I’m pretty good at spotting fishy emails but everything about this seemed normal to me until the tax form. Thank you for any opinions or ideas you can provide!

Hey all!

I’ve been really wanting the hand blown Vondel’s G5 glass ornaments, and I see they are finally for sale on their website. I added two ornaments to my cart, and the shipping came up to just under $100 USD! I know international shipping is expensive…but has it really gotten that bad? I was expecting somewhere more along the lines of $30-50 for shipping….

I was going to post these in the wanted forum to see if anyone here could buy them locally and ship to me for cheaper, but then I decided maybe I should post here first and see if I’m just way out of the loop and that’s a normal shipping price now.

Thank you! :)

Pony Corral / What do you use for pony photography backdrops? Props?
« on: January 18, 2021, 06:25:54 AM »
Hey guys!

I finally got a proper light box to photograph my ponies with, and it’s awesome! Being a night owl, I appreciate having nice lighting at all times of the day. However, I’m already sooo bored of the few solid color backdrops it came with, so I’m looking for ideas on alternatives!

For info, my light box is one of those collapsible box ones. I think it’s 20in x 20in, so it’s pretty big! The backdrops it came with feel like they are some sort of thick, but flexible vinyl? Plastic? Not 100% sure. They are one solid piece that drapes from the back of the box to the floor. They are secured on by Velcro strips.

I was thinking of buying some fun scrapbook paper when I first bought it, but when I see how big it is, I actually don’t think that will work! I bought some poster board to paint, but that will be kinda hard to store and make multiple backdrops with. I was thinking maybe wrapping paper could work? I can cut it to size and probably get some different varieties cheap at the dollar tree. Are there any other materials that you like to use for a backdrop?

Also, what kinds of props do you like to use in your photos? Are there any other toy lines that are in scale with My Little Pony? I’d love to make more “scene” type pictures, but I often struggle to find accessories that look right with them. I’m also open to props just to give a basic shot some more pizzaz! I already bought some of those glass stones from dollar tree to scatter in the pics. They also had some fairy garden fence that looked like it might scale well, so I picked that up too.

Of course feel free to share some of your favorite pics to show me what youre working with! ;) I appreciate any suggestions you guys have!

WARNING: Long post ahead! Feel free to skip ahead to the pictures!

Ever since my collection outgrew it’s first shelf in my bedroom, it’s been my dream to have my own pony room. For over 10 years I’ve crammed my collection in my bedroom with me. I got pretty creative with room layout and shelf space, but there became less and less room for me in my own bedroom. When the virus first hit, that’s when I realized there were no more ways to be creative, I was out of space.

It’s also always been a dream of mine to own my own place. Rent where I live is pretty much a mortgage payment every month, so I figured I’d save up for a down payment and someday have a place I could call my own and customize as much as I wanted. With enough space for the pony room of course! :P I always liked to poke around Zillow and other real estate sites to see what cheap homes were out here. The cheapest ones were still always way out of my budget, but it was fun to dream. Well back in April a house came up in the heart of downtown for a really affordable price. It also had a whole detached studio in the back I could rent out if I needed to. Just for giggles, I plugged in my new annual income (I had just gotten a promotion) and to my surprise, it was actually something I could afford! I seriously considered putting in an offer, but by the time I started seriously thinking about finances and deciding if I was even ready to be a homeowner, it had already gone under contract. Luckily my friends mom is a real estate agent. I told her I was kinda sorta looking around, but I had a very small budget for the area and wasn’t sure if anything else in that price range would show up. I looked in some not great neighborhoods and homes in good neighborhoods that were in really bad shape. Just as I was about to throw in the towel, this house came up. Initially, I actually wasn’t interested. I wanted a stand alone home, and this is a townhouse with a shared wall. Since it was a corner unit, I figured what the heck, I’ll go see it. It was about a mile away from my parents house which is in an area I normally couldn’t afford. However this place was priced WAY below what homes normally sell for. The place was trashed. The carpets were worn and stained, it reeked of cigarette smoke, the now pony room smelled like dog pee, and the walls were covered in filth. But, it was all cosmetic, nothing was structurally wrong. Since it was under my budget, I thought I could take on the repairs and I put in an offer. It was accepted the next day and I closed back in June. I finally finished all the repairs and got moved in around October.

The pony room took the longest to put together. It was difficult to paint the room, decide where to put all the shelves, and get all 600 or so ponies unpacked and reorganized. I also bought an old claw machine that I repainted to store my plushies in! ^.^ The claw function does not work, but it still lights up! Finally, after many months of hard work, I can present to you, my pony room!

I painted the walk in closet with a landscape mural to create a separate place to show off my play sets. Since I didn’t have a great place to store all my Basic Fun ponies either, I decided to inbox them and use them as part of the display. :)

Since the bathroom was attached to the pony room and already painted green, I gave my favorite pony Minty her own dedicated space! It was by accident that I found the mint shower curtain, and I absolutely could not drop the idea after that
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The curtains are blackout curtains with small stars cut into them, they look really cool during the day, but also keep out most of the light from the sliding doors so my ponies can hopefully avoid sun damage. I plan to eventually get rid of the bunk bed and fill the space with more shelves, but since this set up holds my collection fine for the time being, it will stay since it fills the space well.

If you want to look, I will include some pics of the rest of the house under the spoiler. ^.^ I never dreamed I’d be able to pretty much custom design a house for myself, but I am SO pleased with how everything came together in the end!

Spoiler
These photos were taken around Halloween, so some of the decorations have been replaced with Christmas now. Also, I loved that old refrigerator to death, but it started smelling like chemicals, so I had to replace it. Picture a French door refrigerator in its place now. trying to find a fridge in Bisque was a huge pain btw. Apparently I’m very out of style by liking that color  but oh well, as you can tell my style is the complete opposite of modern anyway!

I had tried to do before and after shots, but the site I’m using to upload images took it all out of order. :( I didn’t have the patience to try and re arrange it again, so it’s just after photos here.

Customs / *~ A couple of star themed customs ~*
« on: April 26, 2019, 03:44:25 AM »
I've been trying to improve my custom skills and made a couple new ponies for practice! :) I didn't really plan on it, but they both ended up having star cutie marks!

The first pony I made is based on this unnamed G3 pegasus from the Friends are Never Far Away special
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

(images taken from My Little Wiki)
I was always so bummed out as a kid that she never got a toy form! She stood out to me a lot more than some of the official characters did! So I decided to finally go ahead and make her myself.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I didn't really do anything too crazy with her. She started off as a G3 fakie who's eyes and symbol I repainted, and then I gave her some new (and extra) hair. :) I placed her yellow stripe a little lower than where I would have liked it, but with her hair being parted it doesn't look as weird.

Next I had been playing around with a pouring technique for another project and wondered if it might work on a pony too. It was a little awkward to work out, but I think I like the end result! She started life as a baity Firefly and Sunbeam who shared some body parts with each other. (I have an alicorn bait waiting for some new life now too ;) )
This is Stargazer!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

She was really hard to get a good photo of, because the paint dries with a really glossy finish. Hopefully you can make out some of the marbling in her body!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I wanted her to look a little alien, so I painted her eyes copper and gold. This was also my first time rehairing with tinsel! It's a little bit of a mess, but she definitely needed the extra sparkle. :P
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I didn't really know what to do with her cutie mark at first. I originally was just going to do white spots like Cotton Candy, but realized that looked too plain, so I turned them into stars instead.
I like the finish overall that this method produces for a full body recolor. Some lessons learned from it: it dries fairly tacky, so I definitely need some sealer for it. I also need to figure out the best way to let the pony dry. I let Stargazer's body dry with her neck down and feet in the air which created an uneven surface of paint around her neckline. I want to give it another try at some point and see if it looks okay with a solid color, because I really like how easy it is to get a smooth coat of paint with it! :)

Thanks for looking!

Customs / My very first custom!
« on: February 02, 2019, 04:05:58 AM »
First of all, thank you to everyone who helped me figure out how to re-root a pony. I've been wanting to try my hand at customs for years but the thought of rehairing always scared me off.  I'm happy that I now have a solid grasp on it and I'm hoping to make more customs in the future now! For the time being, I started off with persona Sedona Dreams. I figured at least I don't have to worry about coming up with a design and if I completely mess up, I won't have to feel too bad since I already have a nice commission of her from a few years back. :P

I still have a lot to learn, but for a first attempt, I'm pretty proud!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

As you can see, she's got one piece of hair that does not want to cooperate. :P I'm working on taming it right now, but if it doesn't want to sit, well, being a little sloppy is definitely her style. ;)

She started life as a very sad Glory. She had a smooshed face and her legs had warped to the point where she couldn't stand. Glory also had no tail, a buzz cut, no symbols, and red paint marks all over. She seemed like a good candidate to give a new life to, so I got to work on fixing her warped plastic first. The face was a little beyond repair unfortunately. It's still a little funky, but it's better than it was before! For her feet, adding the fur helped balance her out!

I think doing a full body repaint was maybe a little ambitious for a first project. I lost a lot of the paint on her head during rehairing, which I'm pretty sure I have an idea of how to prevent next time, but it was disappointing for sure. For my next project I think it will be strictly a rehair so I can better get the hang of that without worrying about flaky paint. :P

In the end, despite her flaws, I'm very proud of how she turned out. :) I hope in a couple years I can look back and see improvement from the starting point, but for now I think she's given me the confidence I need to keep trying!

Customs / Re-rooting tips for the absolute beginner?
« on: January 28, 2019, 05:36:23 AM »
Hey everyone,
I decided to take the plunge and try my hand at customizing! I ordered some hair and was really excited to get started, but I'm honestly really struggling. I'm using the tool method, and even though I've watched a few tutorials on Youtube and read some picture guides, I can't seem to figure it out. :( It looks easy enough, I'm separating my plug, wrapping it over my finger, and picking up with the tool just fine, but when I go to stick the needle in the hole, the hair isn't actually going in. I am making sure to stick the tool all the way in to where it's touching the pony's head. I have noticed on my tool the needle keeps kind of retracting back into the part where it's secured in. I feel like I'm twisting the little claw part as tight as it will go, and the needle feels secure when I play with it, but maybe it can go tighter and I'm missing something? I have a feeling this is a big part of my struggle.

I'm also getting discouraged because I did a full body repaint and when I go to try and get a plug in the paint is chipping. I think I saw in one of the tutorials that you should seal the paint first, so I'll try that and hope it helps. Seeing the paint chips is making me afraid to really play around with the hair though, and further frustrating me.

At this point I'm half thinking of giving up on the tool and trying another method, but I feel like if I can't figure out the easiest method, I'm really going to be in for a bad time if I try one of the more complex method. I feel like the tool looks so easy in every tutorial I've seen, so I'm just looking to see if there was a trick that helped you at first? Did you struggle bad with your first rehair? Would it be easier if I started out on a bait that isn't a full body repaint?

Also, sorry for rambling a little, I wanted to try and be clear with what my issue was. :P Thank you for any helps or tips you can provide! :)

I made some non seasonal ponies to put in my signature for now and thought I'd share! I traced the lineart from a G3 comic, because honestly? Ponies pigging out on food is a big mood. Here are the two I've made so far as examples:

Special requests?:
FOR CAKE ONLY: cake flavor/icing color?

If you would like to request a pony in both poses that is okay with me! I am also happy to adjust the lineart a bit if your pony has special design traits you want to keep, just note it in the special request section.

I will keep these open unless I get backed up and need to catch up. Please note I will probably only be able to upload these on weekends!

Pony Brag Arena / Finally some pony luck! Pic Heavy!
« on: January 15, 2019, 05:55:55 AM »
It's been years since I've had any really good luck finding ponies in the wild, or even online for good prices! I've mostly been buying the G1 re releases and not much else. But finally it seems I've been having luck all at once! There are some belated Christmas brags in here too, but lets just say this winter has been overall a good pony season! :P
Group shot of everyone:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Sorry, all of these pics are going to have bad lighting/flash. :( I work graveyards so I really don't see the sun much!

First here are all the ponies I got for Christmas!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Finally I'm getting caught back up on some of the HQG1C ponies! Not pictured are the valentines duo, they're currently hanging out with me on my work desk. ;) I also got some Dollymix ponies and Cutie Mark Crew ponies!

Next, isn't necessarily good luck I suppose, but I'm still excited about them! I found BAB Cheerilee and they happened to be having a sale where it was buy one get one for $10. So of course I had to get the little valentines day unicorn! :P
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I bought the Christmas unicorn at the time too...if BAB decides to make a unicorn plush for every season I'm in real trouble.

Also, not exactly crazy luck or anything, but I found the new Luna brushable that's actually blue! She's actually really stunning in person, I think this is the first G4 purchase I've been impressed by in years!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Then I finally found some ponies at Goodwill! Its been years since I've found any ponies at Goodwill that I didn't already have and were interested in buying!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I was mostly after Daring Do in the bag, but honestly I'm happy with the others too! Luna is my favorite princess so I'm happy to have another plush of her! I kind of wanted this one at the time but couldn't justify spending the money! The Twilight Sparkle is kind of cute too, her hair needs a lot of work but I think I can make her pretty again! I like her different eye shape on this toy!

And I saved the best for last, I finally have an Aikarin custom in my herd! I don't even remember how I stumbled across her customs page but Aikarin was really my first glimpse into the pony collecting world at the time! I was barley even a teenager at the time, so being able to see my toys turned into works of art really introduced me to the idea that, hey, I don't have to outgrow my ponies! I was obsessed, I was determined I would own one of her customs one day! Well, nearly 12 years later, that day has come!
Please help me welcome Florabella!

I remember being so in love with this pony when she was posted at the time, I can't believe she is actually part of my collection now!
Here's a better view of her hair:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And the detailing on her hooves is incredible! Photos really don't do her justice!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Fun fact; My persona Sedona Dreams was originally entered in one of her custom pony design competitions. Obviously she didn't win, but I have kept her as my way to represent myself in the pony community for years now! Shes grown and changed with me quite a bit over the years of course, but I still love her design and I really feel I grew into it more with age. Sedona Dreams was obviously overjoyed to meet her new friend too ;)

Sorry, this got kind of long! What can I say, I'm a rambler!  Thanks for looking!

It's that time of the year again! I guess I hadn't updated my original craft thread for a long time so it's locked now, but it's probably cleaner if I just keep things restricted to one year anyway! :P

I gave her some blush too, I felt her face needed more color. I'm not 100% sold I love it though, I might paint over it.

I'll have to try and get some pics of them outside next! They're pretty spread out, but hopefully with some more additions in coming years it'll be a big pony party!
Update 11/20:

It's time to start working on Christmas ponies! I'm way ahead of the game this year and already have one done! I'd like to introduce Masquerade into my little collection!

She's a hefty girl, I think I may have made her bigger than my past ponies.

She even has a twinkle eye! I couldn't find any rhinestone big enough for her whole eye, but I think this works just as well.

Up next I think I'll do Moondancer!

Halloween now under spoiler, to keep things clean! ;)
Spoiler
To kick off the holidays I've been working on some stuff for Halloween! First off here's some really rough lineart for one of my yard decorations. I'm going to make the Hatbox Ghost from the Haunted Mansion this year!

For Refernce, here are some of my past ghosts I've done. He will become a wood cut out like them.

Next I'm WAY ahead of the game on pumpkin carving! I've decided to go artificial this year, I hate seeing all my hard work rot away a couple days later on the real thing. :( The artificial pumpkins are shockingly not the much different from the real thing. They're a styrofoam so it's much cleaner, but other than that I really didn't have to change my technique much! I'd argue they may even be easier, there's not as much to cut away!

Here he is lit up. The light I bought changes color, so I manged to capture it on Orange. I think I need something better though.

And here's a Pluto I carved last year in a real pumpkin. I'm actually shocked at how different they look! To be fair I used slightly different lineart, but I still think I got much cleaner lines this year and better contrast when its lit up. I guess I have actually improved a little! :P

Thanks for looking! :) There will be plenty more to come over the next few months! After my ghost, if I have time, I think I might try and do another artificial pumpkin, with ponies this time of course! ;)

Pony Brag Arena / New Pony Tattoo!!
« on: August 04, 2018, 09:45:53 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm so excited to share my pony tattoo I got today! I was going to wait until it healed a little and photograph it with ponies but that's not happening haha! I have been wanting one for years now, but between gathering funds and finding an artist I really loved, it's been stuck in the back of my mind for a while. Luckily last year I got a better job and found an artist who I absolutely adored, and as luck would have it she was travelling to tattoo in Phoenix this year! I was fortunate enough to get a spot and we worked together to make the perfect design for me. I truly can not express how happy I am with words so I'll let the pictures do the talking!

I got my two greatest loves in one beautiful piece, Disneyland and ponies! I choose Sparkleworks because she was the first pony I ever got and Minty because, well, obviously she's a lifelong favorite for me ;)
The tattoo was done and photographed by the extremely talented Miss Mae La Roux from California.
For being my first real big tattoo, I can say the pain was tough, but so worth it in the long run!
Thanks for looking! :)

Pony Brag Arena / Music Festival Fakie!
« on: March 04, 2018, 12:58:25 AM »
Hey everyone!

It's been a while since I've had any real luck finding ponies in the wild, but today I found a super cute fakie at the last place I expected, a music festival, and just had to brag about her! They had some local artists set up selling their work and this one man had this girl sitting at his booth front and center! I stopped and grabbed her so fast I think he was worried I might just steal her :P I have high doubts he actually crafted her himself but that doesn't really matter! Here she is at the festival with me!

Yes, she does in fact light up!
Here she is back at home with a regular size G4 Minty for size comparison

It looks like she's a cute little mix of Applejack and Rarity. She is by far my favorite concert souvenir yet!
