Airbrush Issue
« on: July 03, 2015, 05:42:30 PM »
Well I decided for now to just use paint in my new airbrush. Of course turns out I'm having issues painting a pony. It's coming out all spattery for lack of a better word. Does anyone here with airbrush experience have any clue what went wrong?

It might help if you posted some photos and some specifics about your airbrush/set up.  It can be several things - such as the pressure coming from your compressor to the paint being too thin, too a bent needle to not clean nozzle.

It's a Testor's Aztek A270 Mighty Mini with a compressor. It's brand new and my first time using it so I don't think anything is dirty or bent. I can't get pictures of the splatter because now that it's dried it doesn't even show. I was painting with transparent yellow acrylic mixed into Createx transparent airbrush medium but I must not have added enough color for it to show.

Try adjusting the distance at which  you spray, you might hold  the object too close to the spray or the paint might not be thinned out enough.

Could it be what I'm spraying on? I'm spraying on a hard plastic surface. I'm wondering if I should prime it with dullcote?

It could and I would. Also, give it a good wash to remove any possible oil residue on it.

As someone also still learning to use an airbrush, I find my paint splatters when I don't have the consistency right or when the nozzle is starting to have some dried paint, but as others have said, it can be a lot of different issues causing it.

So it might be the consistency? Did it happen when it was too liquidy or too thick?

Splatter happens for me when the paint is too thick-  I'd add water.

You might want to experiment with spraying on a sheet of cardboard, I think it takes a little bit of practice.

Oh and make sure you take your ENTIRE airbrush apart to clean every time you are done using it- a teeny bit of paint dried up in there can mess everything all up too.

Yes, I think it was too thick when it did that.

What if it's a runny kind of splatter?

I really urge you to experiment-  really airbrushing does take some experimentation and practice with the settings and viscosity.
