Title: Set completion- do you collect them all?
Post by: katrine2309 on July 31, 2018, 10:09:40 AM
Set completion isn’t really my thing. I’ve never collected with that in mind. So imagine my surprise when I actually felt ecstatic when realizing I had not one, but two complete sets in front of me

I suddenly understood the fun in completing sets!

So, what do you do? Collect to complete sets or not? Why/why not? And regardless of collecting- what is your favorite set? The one you really like the most? And please, spread the pony love - post your pictures!!

(Truth be told, not ALL these ponies are mine. I might have kidnapped some from my sisters collection*shameful*. But it is almost the same as my own:P)

First set PnC babies incl unicorns and pegasi (not AJ)

I'm not a set completionist *in general*, but there are some sets I wouldn't mind completing :) Off-hand I think the only complete sets I have are the Big Brothers and Mountain Boys:

Still working on getting all the baby boys, family ponies and G3 winter ponies :) I think they're the only sets I'm actively trying to complete.

I don't really tend to be attracted to sets, unless my favorite pony is in it (which is dirty trick, Hasbro). Even then, I don't really buy them (just agonize and pine over them indefinitely). I happened to find half of the g4 Wonderbolts collection at a thrift store, and the other half a a completely different store a few days later, but was only momentarily considering getting the other half to compete the set.

I don't have any complete sets (Unless you count having G1 bubbles and seashell lol) But I do want to complete some, Sparkle ponies being one, glow and shows being the other. I don't have any Glow and shows yet though

There are certain sets that I feel the need to complete, the year 2 and 3 unicorn/pegasus ponies, for example.  It's usually based on how long I stared at the backcard as a child, honestly.

I usually go after thematic sets.  All the ponies with celestial symbols (still working on that one) is the big one for me. And still not done.

But I am thinking of branching out to ponies with clouds in their symbols, I did a breakdown last night.

That being said though, I'm suddenly really interested in the first round of Sweetheart Sisters for some reason.  And I have a renewed interest in the German Flower ponies.  For the longest time I only wanted Snowdrop.

Yes, agreed! I’m like that too- which is why I was surprised by the happy-dance I was inclined to do when I saw the whole set of baby ponies together

I think the only set I want to complete (with all ponies actually being mine :P ) is the early Baby Pony set from Germany w/baby Buttons etc. I do spot some of them in your picture as well, they are really adorable - all of them :inlove: I love your collection by the way- so many of those ponies I love as well!

I love having complete sets. Not so much with G1 but it's a must with G2 and G4 (although to be fair I really just need anything and everything G2).

For G1 the sets I want to complete are mostly cases of I want every pony in the set individually. Although I think I still have a few on my list where there was only one pony in the set I didn't want, and I just couldn't have them be left out

This is so very true for me too! I feel so much more attached to the ponies on my childhood backcards! Probably why I love the baby ponies so much :P

I'm moderately into set completion if I feel it is a necessary part of my collection. I recently completed the original 6 CP poses (a mix of FF and CF, but I feel it is completed nontheless), although this was motivated by me characterizing each of the characters in my college doodles.
I do have a complete set of the year 2 rainbow ponies, but this was due to a Christmas gift request for "any pony lot" and the tendency of eBay people to pack similar ponies together.
I do intend to complete the year 2+3 unicorn/pegasi/earth ponies because I feel they are important ponies, but aside from that, I'll just pick up what I see.

I'm a completionist so all sets must be complete, eventually.

I do consider myself a set collector, but I won't buy specific ponies to complete a set (not that I ever seek out specific ponies, I really only buy locally so I don't have much choice ;)) I just like complete sets in my collection. It's not my main goal though, more of a side quest.

For me sets are aesthetically pleasing, since a lot of sets have ponies designed to go together in a theme whether it be colors or TAF. For example, I think the sparkle ponies and tropical ponies look really good all together. If you have the same gimmicks together no pony looks out of place. They have a common theme and it's just nice.

I also like completing sets because ponies can have their friends with them :P It's cute! I wouldn't want anyone to be lonely. I also feel that displaying by set is the most organized.

For me it depends on the set,  I would like to complete most of them, but some are a pass, I dont need multiples of the same pony.

I haven't bought a set completer for awhile... My goal when I got back into collecting earlier this century was that I wanted all US releases. I've come to realize that this will probably never happen due to the expense of mail orders, but I'll keep trying.
My strategy was that I'd attempt to finish a set all at once. About 80% of my collection is local finds. I should really update images of the 'back room' but for now here's one shelf...

Congrats on completing your sets! They're so pretty! :frolic:

I can think of maybe 4 sets I'd wanna complete. Unfortunately, 2 of those 4 have alot of issues: the Secret Surprise and Precious Pockets.

As for the Tropicals, I like Tootie Tails, but I don't like her as much as the other 3 and wouldn't go outta my way for her.

The first Sea Pony set is the only one I've decided to complete. They're small in terms of how many ponies I'd need to grab, not too expensive and I love them all.

Otherwise no. There's always at least 1 pony I don't like or don't care for. And I'm not the type to grab something I don't like just for completion's sake.

Oh wow, they are beautiful! I do have one or two complete G1 sets but some of my clans are picked from one or two different sets. Some like ponies just come in pairs in my collections.

I don't usually go for sets, I just want the white or boy ponies. I happened to obtain the first set of rainbow ponies, but the only set I really want to complete is the big brothers (and if I was rich, mountain boys) because I love thir molds.

My goal in the long term is to eventually own every US released pony, minus some variations. But at the moment I'm buying the ponies I like the most/what I find locally. Once I've bought one pony, I tend to keep an eye out on others from the same set. But I don't actively hunt down entire sets because I absolutely have to complete them.

The only set I've bothered to complete is the Year Two Rainbow Ponies. Because I liked them all and thought they looked so good together. Oh, wait, I also tracked down all the G4 Glimmer Wing Ponies after they were out of stores.

I don't complete sets, I just collect whatever I like and don't have much space for 'extra' stuff. I'd rather fill my spaces with stuff I absolutely want, and I'm not a completionist by any means when it comes to mlp!

That being said I wouldn't mind getting Mommy Apple Delight and Baby Brother Apple Delight as an exception, since I would love to own daddy and baby sister some day. Wouldn't be actively looking to complete the family, but if I came across those two I wouldn't say no!

There's also the red/white/blue/yellow palette Argentina nirvanas. Peachy, North Star, Buttons, and maaayyybe Lovely Melody.

While these aren't technically a set, I'd love to have any of them since the color scheme is beautiful!

I don't try to complete every set I get a pony from, but there are some sets I want to complete, ones where I really love every pony in it, or at the very least the overwhelming majority of the ponies in it. I want to complete:

Spoiler
-So Soft Ponies (preferably with nice flocking, I've got 4 so far)
-Twinkle Eyed Ponies (I've got 7/15)
-Twice As Fancy Ponies (I've got 5, also not sure if I should aim just for the main TAFs and playset TAFs or also include Sunshines, babies, etc as well? That'd be a lot harder but it's such a great gimmick!)
-Pretty and Pearly Baby Sea Ponies (I've got just one, Water Lily. But I want to get every pony out there with a pearly gimmick, and therefore wish to have all of these)
-Princess Ponies (I've got 2/12)
-Pony Friends (I've got one, Kingsley)
-Brush 'n Grow Ponies (and Princess Brush 'n Grows, I've just got Glittering Gem)
-Summer/Windy Wing Ponies (I've just got 1, Sun Glider)
-Merry Go Round Ponies (I have none...)
-Sparkle Ponies (I have 3/6, content with just store releases for the most part, but I'd like mail order versions of Star Hopper and Napper as well because of the different hair)
-Sweetheart Sister Ponies (like, all the SHS sets, not just the first. Love these elegant girls!)
-Baby Pearlized Ponies (have none another pearly set!)
-Baby Sparkle Ponies (have none)
-Ballerina Ponies (just have two babies so far)
-Drink 'n Wet Ponies (2/4)
-Rockin' Beats Ponies (have none)
-Glow 'n Show Ponies (have none)
-Teeny Tiny Baby Ponies (have none)
-Flower Fantasy Ponies (have none)
-Colorswirl Ponies (have one, Lovebeam)
-Fancy Mermaid Ponies (have none)
-7 Pony Friends (have none)
-Family Friends and Family Baby Ponies (have none)
-Hair-Do Ponies (have none, another pearly set!)
-Rollerskate Ponies (have none)
-Seaside Baby Ponies (have none)
-Sweetie Baby Ponies (have none)

Geez, there's a lot more I want to complete than I thought there were. Some do take priority over others, but with all of these I either just love all the ponies' color schemes, or I just really love the gimmick itself. Which is probably the case with most of these?

My completionist tendencies come out when I reach the point of having half or more of the ponies from a certain set. At that point when there's only 1-2 left I find myself compelled to complete the set. Although this is a habit I really am trying to break. I try to only collect what I love but its easy to fall into a trap of the never ending wishlist!

I wouldn´t really call my self a completionist, but I´ve found that as soon as I have two or more from the same set, I get an urge to complete it.

So far I only have two full sets:
- Baby ponies from year 3
-TAF first set, year 5 I think

One from complete set:
-CP year 1

I would really like to have a complete TAF year 6 too, and the rainbow ponies from year 2 &3.

I have some complete sets of the ones that i like, but mostly it is just ponies like the look of now for display reasons i do not have the room.

Once upon a time it was all ponies for me but i decided what was the point of having them if they were just kept in a box all the time.

Collecting an entire set isn’t my main goal, more on just finding specific ponies. I’ve never complete a set, but if I do, it’s probably by sheer coincidence. I want to collect all the ponies with a star or other astronomy theme. Not exactly a formal set, but I’d love to have my own little collection of just space ponies.

I'm a set completer when it comes to G1. I don't have the same impulse for any of the other generations though. I think it's because I grew up with G1, and as a kid I wanted a lot of ponies I never even saw in stores, so when I got to collecting, I wanted to grab everything I found. And when I started collecting, it was like 1995, so there were lots of cheap ponies on second hand sales that I could get...

Probably if it were now, I would have to be a lot more circumspect as ponies are harder to get and more expensive. So maybe that would change.

I do have sets that I remember prioritising - the y2 unicorns and pegasus ponies, y3 rainbows, early babies - ones I remmeber from the comics that were either not sold here or are hard to find here for one reason or another.

Although some sets my sister and I have completed between us, and I won't ever fill the gaps in my own personal collection because I don't feel like I need to have those ponies if she does. Just some of them I go after on my own as well.

With G2 and G3 I collect the ponies I like only. With G4 I focus on non-mane 6. I do have some mane 6, mostly from second hand sales or because I like the set style, eg water cuties. I have almost a complete set of those, I think, including the winged ones - just Cadence missing I believe...

But most G4 sets I don't even know the proper releases or names for xD. I just go after ones that aren't mane 6.

Your sister collects too? I always thought it was nice to be able to share my hobby, and my stories and memories, with my sister. I don’ feel the need to collect ponies from her collection either. But if I ever do come across PnC baby Gusty- I will keep her regardless  My sister doesn’t actively collect anymore though, but I do still share with her - it’s still nice:)

Yes, but not really *lol*
I usually like the concept of a set, so I like everyone, or none of them. And if I like 5 in the set, but not the 6th one, I will probably feel bad for leaving one out, and feel that I need to complete it anyway. ^^
And I dont really like having just one pony from one set, as I like to display them togheter, as they have the same kind of theme and look good togheter.

On the other hand, there are sets that I dont like at all, so those I dont feel I need to complete ^^

It was a lot of fun :) We brought home new ponies almost every week for a couple of years. And because there was always the surprise element of not knowing what you would find, it was even better :)

Yes, my sister collects as well. Her ponies are mostly packed away at the moment because of space, but she came to ponycon with me last year and she's been following the retros as well (she has four of them so far, 3 Collector Ponies and one rainbow). She has her childhood adult ponies still out of storage, plus a couple of others, and at Easter she was talking about extra shelving to get some of her others out of storage too. It's lovely having someone to share the interest with, back as children and now too :D

The only problem is she has a habit of kidnapping my ponies sometimes ;)

Back when we started trading, we kind of had a list between us of which ponies we would each have so that we didn't fight when we found them and it worked mostly quite well. But my sister somehow managed to end up with Crumpet, Munchy, Oakley and Chacha on her list. I can't afford to add any of them to my own collection so I don't have them - she does.

I usually don't set out to complete sets, but once I see that I'm close I will make an effort to hunt down the last one or two. So far, I've only got one completed, the first 6 CP plus Lemondrop and Peachy. I happened to find them all in the wild/in person, too :)

Right now, I've got two sets I've almost completed: the first Sweetheart Sisters, and the Rainbow Curl girls. I found all my Rainbow girls in the wild as well, so Raincurl needs to come to me in person! Aurora happens to have both ponies I need (Raincurl and SHS Fancy Flower) so I'll be able to get them from her at the next Minnesota meet :)

I’m one pony away from completing the first set of Princesss Ponies. I’m pretty sure I’m missing Ruby/Primrose. I want to complete the G1 baby merponies (I have 2 out of the 3) and I have the 4 G3 Divine Shine ponies. Otherwise I just go after the ponies that I like and don’t worry too much about completing each sets :)

I'm not a set completionist at all- if I were, I'd be broke! Since I buy whatever tickles my fancy and not limiting myself to one set, one gen, one type of toy, one company, etc. I collect lots of different types of (sometimes expensive) toys. So when I see a pony that I really like, I'll buy it, but I don't let myself focus on completing sets. I usually end up with one or two ponies from each line or set or wave that's released.

That being said, I love seeing peoples' complete sets! Your G1s are lovely!

I'm not a completionist but I do like to have complete sets for a lot of them. Let me think of what I have complete, I have the Rainbow Ponies, the first set of adults, first set of babies, first set of Flutter Ponies, first set of Princesses, first set of Twice as Fancy, I have all the US releases of newborns including mail orders so all those are complete, Tropical Ponies, Rainbow Curl Ponies, Baby Sparkle Ponies, UK PnC baby ponies, German baby ponies, first set of UK adults, bedtime newborns, best friends baby ponies and I think that's it. Phew! I had to pull out the checklist to look those up. One day I'll get photos, I'm still working on organizing my pony room.

Some sets that I'm close to completing and are priorities are 2nd set Princesses, Twinkle Eyes, So Softs and Sparkle ponies. They're each 1 or 2 ponies away from completion. After that, I'm pretty much picking up what I find in thrift stores or looking for good deals. I have some other sets I'd like to eventually complete but I think I have all the most wanted ones already.  :)

I'm not really a completionist, I think I only go after ponies I really like...........

but those sets sort of creep up on you :)....... especially that darn Apple Delight family :).
I wanted the Daddy as I love boy ponies. Got him, thought that was it. Then came across his delightful daughter in a lot. Resisted for a while before searching down Mum and Brother. They look so gorgeous all together.
Now the family have got 'relatives' in the form of most members of the other two families - how did that happen?!!!

So many nice sets! :inlove: I have a question about the UK PnC set (it was actually also sold at least in Sweden). Is there any way to differentiate between the UK baby Cotton Candy and Blossom and the ones sold in the US released versions? I always loved Baby Applejack, but it would have been so interesting if the other two from that set (baby CC and Blossom) had something different about them too. Like German baby Cotton Candy lacking the pat.pending mark on her hooves (like all baby ponies from that set), or UK Sundance as a NC pony.  I don’t know, they probably don’t though!

I have both Baby AJ and Baby Blossom from new here in the UK but I'm not aware of any differences on Blossom. EXCEPT that there are 2 versions of Baby Blossom, one darker and one paler purple (the latter fades more easily to grey/beige). But both were here...and it's like Windy, it's just a batch difference.

My Baby Blossom was my 2nd pony and first baby, so she's very battered and faded, making it impossible to know what she started out life as, but we do have some photos with her from when I was about four and she doesn't look that dark in comparison to some of the others I've had. I've seen similar with Baby CC but I think it's also batch.

If it helps at all while being geeky and off topic, the packaging style for that set is categorically 1984 art style but with stories, which only began in 1985. They are therefore kind of on the cusp between the two years here in the UK - so it's probably not surprising that there are some differences. Also I know Baby AJ was sold in France, I've seen her MIB in French box.

I agree the PaCS babies (thank you all so much for not saying NBBE!) are European, not UK. I think they were available in many Western European countries in around 1986.

..Back on topic - set completion to me also means completing variations. For example the Rainbow Babies - I have a set of ones found/bought new here in the UK and a set of ones which originate from the US and they are not the same.

Your knowledge is endless, Taffeta!  :worshippy:

Thanks so much for replying- I love these quirky MLP details! I do think it is easy to think of these as UK exclusives though as, at least for Sweden I think they came on the UK card. So, if one don’t think about how often ponies on UK cards were sold in other countries one would just assume it was UK only, I guess. The French Applejack would destroy that theory though! By the way, I’ve noticed a signifant reduction in the term NBBE - it makes me happy too (although I do forget  sometimes- old habits... )

Back to topic on set completion:
I never thought about variations as their own kind of set, but that makes sense! I never cared that much for variations earlier, but the more I indulge myself with all geeky MLP stuff- the more fun I have with variations. Now I tend to keep them- if I find any :P

I also noticed there are a lot less collectors interested in set completions than 10 years ago. I would have thought there would be much more completionists. I wonder why that is? Or if it is just a coincidence?

Most likely a coincidence though I wonder if it is because many people are living in smaller homes now, and when space is limited everything one owns has to be heavily curated.

I wonder if it is to do with the increase in cost of ponies as well? And we're all getting older, have different priorities maybe? I don't know.

I think a lot of things have been confused by 'UK' style backcards, esp. when they're ponies sold on cards marked UK but NOT available here. Because that makes sense, Hasbro. Oh wait, Hasbro don't make sense xD.

(I wish my knowledge was endless. ><. Or at least some of it was actually useful in the real world xD)

I'm almost 23, I've collected since I was little, and never cared about completing sets for the sake of completion, though I did seek out the third McD's G2 pony (Ivy) as a kid partially because I thought it'd be cool to have all 3.

It's funny actually, you saying that, Khoufu. As a kid I didn't care at all about set completion either. I mostly had one example from a set, and that was it - I moved on to another set for the most part. The exception was the Rockin Beats because they needed all the members to be a proper band...

Some of the later baby sets my sister and I had between us I think. But in the early years it was usually one - Masquerade was my TE, Windy was my Rainbow...I had Cherries Jubilee from 1985, Snowflake from 1986...Tropical Breeze was my flutter...etc etc.

But as a kid I didn't have a lot of money so saving up for a pony was special. And being able to get all these other ponies at second hand sales for £1 or less was too irresistible to pass up...

I guess that was the first time I actually thought I could complete sets, so it was the first time I actually wanted to...

Anyone else changed their position from when they were a kid to now (with whatever gen)?

If I could have I probably would have had them all as a kid  It is the grown-up in me that try to talk some sense and be rational when I’m deciding NOT to buy.

But still there were ponies I liked less, and probably wouldn’t have bought even then. I didn’t like pink ponies that much I remember. I tried to avoid getting them (except for Firefly). Not because I didn’t like pink (I did), but it just got too generic for me I think. There were so many pink ponies, and I wanted them to be different. I still remember getting Cool Breeze as a birthday present. Happiest day ever. She didn’t have a speck of pink on her! I loved her :inlove:

So, no- maybe I wouldn’t have been a set completionist- even as a child. My inner child would have bought much, much more ponies than the grown-up allows though  :P

-Super Long Hair Ponies (and other ponies with that gimmick)
-Dazzle Bright Ponies
-Dream Design Ponies
-Crystal Design Ponies
-Cutie Cascade Ponies (and other ponies with cascading symbols)
-Pegasus Ponies
-Pretty Patterns Ponies

For G1:  I am a bit obsessive and a completionist.  It is definitely got to catch them all.

For G2:   Don't care so much about completing sets and I mainly just want to get the ones I like.   Which is actually a majority of them.  But some of sets like magic motion and changing mane and tail I can live without.

For G3:   I already have most of them since I collected them while they were out.   I am only missing a few exclusives I think.    I do want to get the ones I am missing eventually but I am in no hurry.

For G4.   The only set I really want to complete is the early set that came with the pets.  Otherwise I only want a select few.

There are very few sets that I feel the need to complete: notably the twinkle eyes, the flutters and all the wingers. This is due to my wanting one of these ponies - desperately - as a kid and never getting one. Scars you know. I also need to have all the ponies on Tickle's back card as it is my only surviving back card. And of course I needed all the carousel ponies. This is the first and only set that I have actually completed and this would only be due to the fact that my very VERY dear friend gave them all to me except Sparkler for my birthday this year. I already had Sparkler you see.

And here they are: (she also made the carousel)

My eventual goal is own complete sets of all G1 ponies... it's a lofty goal, but one I hope will be achievable in the long run!  It is exciting when I finally do manage to snag the last pony I need for a set, there's just something so deeply satisfying about reuniting those ponies together once more.  Interestingly, I never felt the need to complete sets as a child, unlike some people I knew who would literally cross ponies off on the backcards as they bought them.  But somehow now as an adult collector I do feel the need to complete my G1 sets.

Aha, starting with G4 I had to have every single pony...including mane 6 re-releases. Now I can hold myself back and say 'no thanks' to the static Twilight Sparkle with the Applejack and bed, partially because I pay for my collection now.  :P So I sort of went in the opposite direction.

There was a time when I wanted nearly everything it seemed  but I realized I would need to focus and started choosing types to collect and then for a long time I was collecting only one of each character. So when new waves and releases would come out, I'd buy just the new characters from it. Now my collection consists of 7 Funkos (& 1 on my wishlist) and 3 G4 brushables,  definitely no full sets there.

I have one where the head and body are each different batches of plastic and it drives me up the wall. Its like one was made with the Flatfoot Blossom plastic leftovers, and one was made with the Concave Foot Blossom leftovers. (yeah it's the one in my sig, I ripped her head off looking for a solution).  It makes me sad because I like them both ways.  A faded Blossom is quite pretty!

Congrats on your sets!  I wouldn't mind having all the babies and new born twin sets.  But, I don't actively collect.   I do have all of the original collector's pose ponies.  I think that's the only set I've completed.

Absolutely :) Every pony - every set - every accessory (of course)!

Although now as everything is complete...its more about upgrading or "tweaking" lol.

However, when I started collecting I certainly didn't intend to complete everything. I planned to just buy those I liked...and then eventually it was just the sets I liked...before finally it was all the ponies :)

I do I like to complete sets it makes me think I achived something special. I like to complete them alot. I know that means I will have more ponies in the future. Though that seems to be a thing with me. I do upgrade ponies too when I think I need to get a better one. :) I mainly just focus on the sets of G1s. Any other gen I completed its just a bonus.

That is so much MLP  I love the MLP accessories, and that was actually a super fun hunt for me with my collection too! Finding the accessories!! It was especially awesome to get all missing accessories to my childhood Dream Castle for instance :inlove:

Not a completionist at all!  :nope:

I decided from the very beginning that there were just *way* too many ponies to collect them all and I would just get the ones I really loved (which is still loads, lol!)!

As for favourite set, wow - that's tough! I love all the collector pose ponies, the dream beauties (minus the Trim 'n' Grow ones) and the TE ponies (minus a few) the Peachy, Lemondrop, Cascade and Majesty playset ponies, the second set of unicorns...oh, and the second set of rainbow ponies (minus Pinwheel), and the second lot of TAF ponies and the sweetberry ponies and, and, and....  :P

No piccies at the mo - sorry! ;)

When it comes to G1 I’m a set completer. I didn’t start that way though. I originally wanted to get the ones I wanted as a child. Then it moved to wanting ponies I liked that I didn’t know about as a child. Then I wanted to start finishing sets that were 1-2 ponies short. That moved to wanting to finish the US/Canada releases. (Just working on some mail orders for that goal.) I also tend to be on the lookout for accessories as well as European ponies now.  I’m sure it will keep expanding from here. I’m also lucky to have started collecting as a teenager in 1999. I found many ponies very cheaply at yard sales and flea markets.
