Title: Found Baby Flying Squirrel (Update Page 2)
Post by: TokiBear on May 18, 2012, 02:42:53 PM
Earlier today there was a hail storm... I decided to look outside to see what size the stones were and saw a strange little creatures struggling to get out of the storm.  Well, it turns out it was a little baby flying squirrel.  It doesn't have any teeth yet.  We are going to try to put him back outside tonight in hopes that mom comes to the rescue, but he's currently in the house being warm.  Isn't he just the sweetest little bugger?

I've been reading up on what to do on websites all day long... if he doesn't find his mom tonight, I'll be taking him to a rehab center tomorrow.  He doesn't seem dehydrated.  He's strong... I think the storm may have just knocked him out of his home.

He's so cute! I hope his mom comes for him tonight. Raising squirrels is not easy and I've been told flying squirrels are worse.

Oh gracious, doesn't he have the cutest little face~ What a precious~

Taking him to a rehabilitation center is a good idea, but you should make sure to call them and explain the situation first. Some centers are very picky about the animals they take, and of course they'll need to know to set up for him.

Oh CUTE! I've never seen a squirrel (apart from tv), dammm they are adorable.  I'd love to see them rocketing through trees with my own eyes.  Sending good vibes to the wee fella for finding his mum or finding a 'surrogate' at a rehabilitation centre.

Oh yes, definitely.  I don't think there is anything even that close to me.  I am still doing a lot of research on them to make sure we give him the best care possible.  The dog is driving me crazy though.  She won't stop whining and keeps trying to get as his cage.  I can't tell if she wants to eat him or mother him!  Haha, this was how she was with the kittens.  We thought she wanted to kill one of the kittens but found her with the stolen kitten trying to take care of it.

Oh and I've named the little guy Winston.  :D

Awh what a sweet little guy <3
I remember we found a baby bat in the garage after a storm. It had obviously wandered off and gotten battered about by the wind.  My brother and I let it suckle on a small piece of (clean!) sponge soaked in warm milk. After less than a day he got over his shock and we let him go. I wonder if Winston would drink milk like that?

According to everything I've read, you shouldn't feed them cow milk.  They saw kitten formula + warm water would be ok and even goats milk.  I have none haha

Awww....So cute!

We found some regular baby squirrels at work once and took them to a wildlife rehab because they were so little and delicate. We were afraid something would happen to them. We gave the mom the day to come back. Good luck!

That is one cute creature!
I hope his mum will find him...

Otherwise, try asking the vet. They should know some kind of resque home for it. *nods*

If you nééd to feed it and you don't have any of the milk advised. You can also use a little coffeemilk/cream with water.
More water then milk though.

Good luck and let us know how the story of this Storm Trooper ends!  ^.^

Well... the little guy didn't make it.  His heating source failed in the night and he passed away.  I feel really bad for him.

And the flying squirrels live on the west side of the divide.  They are actually kind scarce in my area so we really wanted to save him.

that is so sad to hear i have seen one only once here in my state , our cat caught it and brought it home alive and it was hissing at him. We told the cat he was a good kitty and he let it go and it ran off.

 I suppose sometimes, it's just not meant to be.

When I was younger, our cat came home with a babybunny. But let it go in the livingroom, looking at us like "look what I got". He meant well ofcourse.
But the babybunny, really just out of the nest, was terrified and he had a soor back paw (from catbites).
We took it to the vet. The poor bunny only calmed down when Eros Ramazotti played on the radio. So my sis and me called him Eros (had to give up a name at the vet anyway).
We got meds for him and we fed him.
But there was a thunderstorm at night and he paniced... running himself against the wall of his wooden bunny-cage. (we had more bunnies and had a spare). He did this untill his neck broke  .
So much effort... so much chance and still, nature thought differently.

You're a hero for trying, that's for sure!

I'm so sorry! This reminds me of when I was nine and a bird fell down our chimney in a storm. He was in shock and very cold, so we called the bird sanctuary and they told us what to do. We wrapped him in a tpwel warmed in the dryer and put him n a basket. But the bird sanctuary was so far away and on the srive there he passed. It was quite traumatic for me at that age and I will always remember it in great detail. Tje way his eyes slowly closed and he lay back against the blanket and his breathing stopped. I still sometimes dream about it.

That's really sad, but you're wonderful for trying to help him. At least he passed away somewhere peaceful and quiet instead of on the ground outside. :(

Are there no squirrels in NZ?!  They're everywhere here, downright pests!  Always eating my veggies and sunflowers and jack-o-lanterns!  XD  I've never seen a flying squirrel though, not in person.

I've rehabilitated many flying squirrels (they're everywhere down here!) and they are delicate little guys. It's always hard to loose one. I release all of mine back outside as soon as they're able to fend for themselves, except for one. Lydia would not leave me! I put her on a tree and she jumped right back into my shirt pocket. I tried releasing her for or five times but she just wouldn't go. I ended up keeping her for eleven years! She was a very old squirrel when she passed last year. I still miss her.
