Title: Prototypes G1, G2, G3
Post by: Gingerbread on September 23, 2017, 02:58:54 AM
I am currently obsessing over prototypes, G1-G3. G4 are harder because of the whole situation of production operatives selling factory mistakes.

I really wonder why Hasbro didn't release some of the ponies they had prototypes for - the winter carriage pony being a main one. Why Hasbro? She is so pretty. There are a couple of G3s in alternate poses too.

So please can you show me your G1-G3 prototypes please? I've done a couple of searches but Photobucket sucks. Also any snippets of interesting prototype-related information?

The Arena Gallery has a lot of interesting ones if you have some time to browse (PKW will mention it, so I'll save her the trouble xD)

The only thing I have to add picture-wise is Susie, and I don't even know if she is a production sample or a prototype or what she is, to be honest. But she exists and has been seen in person by several UK ponypeople over the years...

...And she's the only one that we know about, but aside from guessing she might have been a sample when they were deciding on her pose, we have genuinely no idea what her story is. LadyG also has a Baby Billie in another pose.

Thank you Taffeta ^.^

There is an interesting assortment of unfinished, pilot skins, wax models and other bits in the MLParena nirvana gallery :)

There is some cool, interesting stuff out there!

I love looking at the retail catalogues at the prototypes shown in those.

Love pkw xxx

Thanks everyone :)

That Susie is gorgeous, much prefer her like that! Taffeta guessing you don't own her, is she still in the community?

I was doing it wrong with the Gallery - I was using the main Gallery search, I didn't think to just go into the Nirvana section and have a look.

I spend far to long on MLWiki than is good for me I think

I do own her, so yes ;) She is still in the community :) Although I have had people offer to buy her, she's not going anywhere. I've had her about 20 years now and she's a part of the pony family...

Oh so pleased you still have her! I wouldn't want to sell her either, definitely a keeper. It's daft and none of my business whatsoever but I love it when ponies stay where people know they are safe, they are in the Arena Club :D

Thank you so much for sharing, they are awesome! I've never seen any G2 prototypes before apart from the booklets. That 'styling' talking one is incredible. I wonder why they never produced her? G2s were quite popular in the EU for a while.

Me too. It's sad when such ponies disappear from the community for whatever reason. I admit I don't take her to pony meets any more - I took her to Green Park, back in what, 2003? which was a little London meet, and I might have taken her to Sheffield around the same time, which was like an embryonic ponycon meet which some of the folk here may still remember, but I've never taken her to Ponycon itself. Ive thought about it but since LadyG almost lost her Billie at one of those in the chaos of the event I've been worried about my tendency to lose things. So she stays at home now with her regular sister and the other members of her set.

The G2 prototypes are indeed awesome. It's also great to get images of those and look at them because we really don't discuss G2 with prototypes enough in my opinion. I love that G2 are finally having some kind of a resurgance lately. Who knows, maybe it will lead to more of these kinds of things turning up.

I don't generally consider most of the weird things that turn up for G4 as prototypes as opposed to production models or seconds, but there are a few which buck that trend.

I confess I love looking at the Arena gallery ;) but also the booklet prototypes on the Wiki and of course, the prototypes on pony inserts from my childhood, where Hasbro often used strange and wonderful pony models to advertise something that only barely resembles it. I just think it's really weird how those ponies from those images are generally not the ones that surface in the collector world...

I have always rather liked the pegasus version of Sweet Delight with her different symbol ;) I wonder very much whether Sweet Delight was always going to be her name, or if she's actually a different pony completely.

What bothers me about this one is that that is absolutely not my Susie :/

I am also still weirded out about the head swap going on with the Meadowsweets. I forget who noticed that first, but now it's been pointed out, I can't not see it.

I love inserts <3 I have a folder of them but they're not in London so I can't scan any of them. I wonder if that Sweet Delight insert prototype is on the Wiki...or if I already put her on the Scrapbook (goes to see).

Ah yep, there she is:

This is the dark place where my pony dreams go now. :(  It's getting to the point where if I had ONE irrational wish, it would be to "beam out" all the toys in the landfill and try to sterilize and restore them... but ESPECIALLY ponies!!!

I always hope that at least some of them ended up with kids of employees, so they had a proper toy life before being consigned to doom.

Don't mean to be rude, but how do you guys know those are prototypes and not really well made customs? Especially the hand painted ones.

There's often much discussion about these, but the painted ones there's a whole story behind, I forget what it is. Also the base colour body of whichever one it is doesn't match any existing pony made in the place her hooves say...which helps.

In terms of Susie, she's been seen by lots of ponypeople and well authenticated. When you put her next to the normal one, she's identical in every way except her pose. The symbol finish is the same, eyes are printed the same, hair is rooted the same. And again, there's no pony that matches her exact colour so you'd have to dye or paint her to get a custom.

I think we are all sceptical about prototypes from time to time and there have been scams. Also the word prototype is often used wrongly. I don't think Susie is a prototype so much as a production sample and the fact that there's also a Billie helps to back that up. It's as if Hasbro were not certain which pose to use for which pony and they made samples and then decided from that point out.

When I got Susie, it was a long time ago. She cost very little, nobody picked her up as odd except me so I got her for cheap. The seller thought she was a normal baby susie and sold her as such. This was in the days before the ebay listings showed on gallery view and back when 90% of pony pictures for ebay were pony-stuck-awkwardly-in-scanner so that kind of rough treatment would have damaged her had she been a custom.

But there are others which are harder to authenticate and a few which people still debate, even now. Reverse Gusty is probably the most famous of those, due to a scam several years ago. I think she probably does exist...but...the problem is knowing how many authentic ones do, because of the number of customs...

But it's a good question to ask and it's also good to be sceptical because unfortunately, scams do happen.
