I recently acquired some G1 stickers from Portugal! They don't seem to be something that's widely known about (in fact, I don't think I've heard much about G1 in Portugal generally), so I thought I'd share some pictures.

Approx. 7x10 cm, they were produced and sold in Portugal in 1987 in order to advertise the Portuguese dubs of Rescue from Midnight Castle and Escape from Catrina, which were shown in 1988. I was surprised to see that they include a picture of the Mountain Boys - a hint that the boys were going to be available in Portugal, or just another example of Hasbro's usual 'look at these lovely ponies, they won't be sold in YOUR country'? (I'm thinking the latter, I know what Hasbro is like ) There's also a glimpse of the prototype human Pony Friends. And of course Portuguese names for several of the ponies (I love foreign pony names!).

Oh wow, those are really cool, thanks for sharing! Also, the leafy guy is cute. :D

Tic Tac Toe as unicorn, so cute! :inlove:
I've seen some of these stickers/cards in local sites. These were different images so I think they are from the same collection. Interesting to know where they come from!

Very cool find!

A lot of those images are either comic illustrations or very close copies (incl. the Mountain Boys, the leaf guy whose name eludes me, Pearl crying with Fiery nearby, etc). So it may just be generic art or it may be they were sold there. I think maybe there's a bigger clue in the ponies that aren't from that artwork, in that several are also given names.
It would be interesting to get a native person's perspective on this but it is possible Portugal, like Italy, had the Mimic set where many other European countries didn't...
I have no explanation for the doll-and-pony-friend art. I've never seen that before. o.O.

How cute, thanks for sharing :D

How neat that some of their Portuguese names are different from their Brazilian names!

They're so pretty!
And fascinating that one of the pony friends has a name! Have they ever been named anywhere else?

If you mean the human character, yes. The prototypes had names :)
@Skeen - same happened between France and Canada. I find that interesting too...

Wow, awsome pics. Thanks for sharing. :)

What's extra-interesting about this, imo, is which name she's given. "Ginger" with a mullet hairstyle is how she appeared on early backcard mock-ups -- not "Alyssa" with a high ponytail, like in the Hasbro catalog -- so maybe it's based off of some kind of prototype backcard art.
Not sure about the TE, but I recognize the TAF art from UK colouring books. Hmm... Maybe Ginger is also from colouring book art that had unreliable/outdated product references, like that one with the strange BBE FT babies?

Yep I meant the human characters. :P
I never knew that they'd actually named them. I'd seen pictures but nothing more.

I think they're Alyssa, Kendall, Cornelia and...something. Zinnia? Maybe? In the prototype image...
Of course I may have just made that up.

I'm late to the party but I have a lot of those stickers on my sticker site:

Wow, these are great! I love the name translations -- some are very literal to the US names, and others seem totally out of nowhere. (Poor Quackers! XD) And those weird BBE/FT babies are sliiiightly less creepy in color, so that's nice.
I've never seen Zinnia called Zita anywhere else before. That could be a Portuguese translation choice... but none of the other girls had a name change, only the animals, so maybe Hasbro provided "Zita"? If so, these images might have come from even further back than the US packaging art. Makes me wonder if Creamsicle was previously going to be called "Sweetgrass" in the US, or if "Erva Suave" just made more sense to a Portuguese audience that may or may not be familiar with orange-vanilla popsicles.

Oh wow, it's awesome to see more of them! Plus a few more Portuguese names to add to my collection of foreign pony names :)
