Seeking Custom Help - The Clay!?
« on: March 04, 2014, 03:31:37 PM »
Hello there!
I've recently decided I'm going to start a custom project!

I can say, I'm VERY new the the scene, but I've been looking for a custom, and can't quite find what I want.
Thread link:
http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,350147.0.html

As I'm clearly starting this project for the first time, EVER...
I've been researching up a lot of custom tutorials, How to do hair, paint, etc!
But one thing I can't figure out.

What clay/clay-type thing do YOU recommend/use?
I'm looking to add clay to my pony, details and extra limbs... but I don't particularity want to put it in the oven... ( Like I would be allowed... but D: )
I'm also looking for clay that will stick nicely to G1 Pony-plastic!

Mostly looking for modules and things available to buy IN the UK!

-It would help if people could include examples of their custom work with the clay they've used, as it would help me SO much!-

Thank you very much in advance!
:D

Since you are wanting to avoid the oven, I would go for Apoxie-sculpt, or something similar. Most air dry clay will shrink and I have gotten nothing but heart ache when trying to use them. I have not tried apoxie yet, you only have a certain window of work time to use it in before it starts to harden so I've just stuck with my sculpey clay. Hopefully someone with more experience with the apoxie will be on soon. Best of luck with your custom hun.

I would totally agree with Apoxie Sculpt, especially if you're wanting to avoid the oven.

I know you're probably looking for some larger examples, but I did a G4 custom Vinyl Scratch with magnetic glasses, and used Apoxie Sculpt to craft the glasses.

I also made a G1 -> G4 custom Fancy MGR Flower Bouquet and used Apoxie Sculpt for both her collar thingy and her saddle:

I have a few others that use Apoxie Sculpt in various ways, but they're incomplete and sitting on my desk still!

I recommend using Milliput, which is a two-part epoxy kind of like greenstuff. I use it for everything, and it hardens in a couple hours which is nice. Pretty sure they're also a UK-based company, so you might have an easier time getting ahold of this stuff than I do. Even with international shipping, though, when I order it from a dealer on ebay, it's still cheaper than buying it in a store here (if I can even find it at all in retail stores)

I swear by apoxie sculpt!  I've been using it for years.  I love that I don't have to bake it, because it cures on it's own once mixed.  It holds detail well, and once it's cured, you can sand it, and paint it.  The only down side is once it's mixed, you have about 2-2 1/2 hours of work time before it gets too hard.  I buy mine direct from www.avesstudio.com

I've made a YouTube video covering several tips and FAQ's about apoxie.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sF9s--daao

As for customs I've made with apoxie...

Another apoxie fan here, but it gives me a rash so I need barrier cream when I use it.  Best of luck with your custom. ^^
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.
