Ha ha, now I'm thinking of this Agatha Christie book where a guy tells Hercule Poirot he's sure to get along with this Spanish lady because "they're both foreign."  And he's like "Yeeeah, actually Spain is as foreign to me as it is to you.  Because I'm from Belgium."
I think it would be interesting to have a chart showing which sets were sold in which countries (if there isn't one already).   Then there are the sets that were sold in the UK or wherever but they cut two ponies out of the set . . .

There is a french website which has listed the set and/or ponies sold in France and the ones who weren't but sometimes a country as close as Belgium had different sets (such as the second set of princess we never got here in France).

There are a few funky releases as well...like blue hearts Dazzleglow and purple haired Tuneful (I think that's her name) she had both a blue hair and a purple hair release...many people believe the purple is International, but i had a friend here in Canada who had one bought for her here. And some of the UK releases of ponies like B. Firefly and B. Surprise were identical except for the non-glitter symbols...we didn't get those at all here in canada.

Ah yes, Pretty Beat is the one with blue and purple hair... to add to the confusion I have seen both versions on European cards as well!

I mean, I'm sure a couple hardcore collectors do, but I think most of us mentally organize them as "Years 1 through 10, and then all the International ponies."

Absolutely. This is an excellent discussion because for so many years this is how collectors thought. Before they were "international ponies," we just thought of them as UK, then European ponies... Then Brazilian and Argentinean ponies popped up and the way we organized MLP was turned upside down.

I think we are lucky in that way, how we are constantly learning more about ponies released all over the world and we'll never know everything. It's exciting :)

So how do we organize them now? I'm happy to continue organizing MLP as US and International ponies, because the US is Hasbro's home base and the majority of released ponies were US/CA releases, regardless of how many US collectors there are.

Ooo, can you point me towards the site? With google translate, I can (poorly) read anything!

What about G2? Hasbro may have had HQ here, but they seemed totally uninterested in selling ponies in the US.

I have bilingual Twinkle Eyed Pony cards from Canada if you'd like an example image. They are really beautiful :)

I'd love to see them! PLMK if they are just for show... or if I can add them to MLW ;)

Sure thing! You may absolutely add them to MLW. Your website is pretty much my most visited! Happy to help. I had Gingerbread too but sold her. I'll try to dig up pics!

Awesome, thanks! >_> I see a few other pix in your photo bucket that aren't on the wiki either, can I add a few of those?

I did some multi-lingual interweb digging... and I found a greek tv commercial for rollerskates ponies, and a bunch of el greco magazine (i guess) ads. And that there were these collectible dolls by el greco during the 80s before hasbro bought them (called like bibi bo), and they used baby pony accessories with the dolls. which i thought was pretty interesting.

Ok, that's cool! Good work finding them and having the sharp eye to recognize the baby buggy in those colors! They must have put the kybosh on it, since I'm sure someone somewhere would have found a blue buggy and asked if it were a prototype of some kind!
Maybe just listing the ponies unique to each country is the way to go, instead of listing all of them? Like, US/Can releases are pretty standard, so stating that other countries (and a list of where they were released) would be good for a header? It gets SO confusing, especiallly with the multiple releases that some countries such as Columbia did with specific ponies such as Blossom and Bowtie. I wonder if Columbia only had access to a few symbol stencils, and they made up for it by using a massive amount of alternate colors. It would explain why there've only been Daddy Apple Delights found from that country. I'd love to see one MOC to see what he was called!

Sure! You can take anything you need and my website has photos of everything in my collection (still working on the G4's) by year/release. http://glownshowpony.weebly.com/

G2 is a very good point!Hmmm..... Hasbro has to make everything so difficult!

Also and totally randomly.... You're in Michigan? Same here! You should come to the MI pony meet in September!

absol, FF ponies were sold in Canada. My very first pony was FF Cotton Candy with the bilingual packaging. They were sold out in a few weeks when I went to buy more, they had restocked with concave/collector pose ones.

I'm Canadian, and I have both those ponies! I was so confused when I first found the pony community and saw that the other versions were dominant!

Sure it's http://meliloo.free.fr/index1.htm

Go to "collection" (the little strawberry on the left)

The set are listed by year (useful for international ponies) and the set not sold in France are listed (for each year) as "Poneys commercialisés à l'étranger"

In each other set, the ponies not sold in France are precised with the country where they were sold, Gypsy for example.

There are a lot of pictures and not so much text, so I'm sure you will do just fine. Otherwise, send me a mp or an email (I have an account on My Little Wiki)

This website was my reference before the creation of My Little Wiki, you will appreciate, I think, that she has all the french names of the ponies.

Yup, FF ponies were definately sold here. G2 just weren't very successful for sales in the US/Canada. I think it's a combo of
1) Too drastic a change
2) Outfits and accessories weren't appealing
3) Overly saturated market with other horse toys (Barbie, etc) and tiny accessoried toys like Polly Pocket
I think the G2 accessories were less relatable to people over here. We don't have castles and wizards and such, and a lot of the G2's were all based on more of a romantic, midaeval setting. The G1 castle was larger and had a throne and things we think of when we think of a classic castle. The G2 world seemed much more European-angled, especially later releases. We could relate to the Pretty Parlour, the Show Stable, and Megan's place. Classic Western horse gear and set-ups.
