Paypal questions
« on: April 05, 2016, 07:37:31 AM »
Ok, I'm new to using Paypal and I am planning to buy and sell through it in the near future. I have an account and it is connected to my bankaccount, but.....

1. I'm not completely sure what costs Paypal deduct when you are selling. I live in Holland. Will that mean that if I am selling to the United Kingdom the costs will be 0,4% of the transaction amount or 3,4% + 0,xx? And to the US 1% or 3,9% + 0,xx?

2. What is normal? Are these costs for the buyer or the seller?

3. I prefer to pay and receive in euro's. Is that possible and is there anything I should do?

4. How do you get the amount from your paypal account to your bank account?

I have been looking on the website from Paypal, but there is just that much information there! Maybe someone over here who can explane it in easy words to me? Thanks!

Try one of these paypal fee calculators:

(in Euros)
https://salecalc.com/paypal?p=0&e=2.9&f=0.3&l=nl&r=0&m=0&c=0

(in dollars, but I like their dual results)

I think it's possible to receive the money in Euros, probably just have to fiddle with the site preferences.

For getting it to the bank account, I do direct account transfers.  Basically I input my bank account # and the bank's routing number to allow deposits.  However, if you don't want PayPal having that info, you can also select to have them send you a money order, I believe.

You can ask the people you are doing deals with to send the money in Euros - I have a sterling account and ask people to make payments in GBP.
BUT I do pay everyone in the currency they want or have liked with their sales - I don't want to force people to accept GBPs (as I don't want to accept USDs myself for example).

And yes, if the account is connected with your bank account it should be under "withdraw money" - click that and then the amount you want and paypal just transfers it - it usually does only take couple of days.

You as the receiver of the money pay the fee - the person sending it only pays a fee if they send it as a gift and if it is not their own currency (I am sure there are some more defined rules - but this should be roughly right).

Thanks for the help so far. In the meantime several payments have been made and it works very well!

One question though... there is also the option to pay as a gift. When you would use that (if a buyer don't want the quarantees from paypal), is that also without extra costs from one country to the other? Paypal says only within NL, but what if you would use it outside NL? Is there an extra fee and if so, how much?

Gift payments are free from fees for the seller, just the buyer pays a very small fee sometimes, sometimes none at all (haven't figured out yet when there is one and when not). But they are not meant to be used for merchandise, as the name suggests, and some sellers have had problems with Paypal interfering as it became obvious these were commercial payments after all. Which happens for Paypal payments to business accounts or simply if the subject suggests a payment for goods.
Gift payments however are a way to pay inside the community (a bit like family) if there's a trust base with each other and for sending items uninsured, because Paypal buyer protection has been misused in the past, of which I heard mostly for Ebay deals. If you send something uninsured and therefore have no proof of shipment, you should do that in combination with a gift payment only as otherwise, you will be in charge if anything goes wrong. Paypal takes the funds from your account and sends them back to the buyer if a proof of shipment can't be provided, therefore I personally would ship uninsued items with bank transfer payments or Paypal gift payments only.
