Pony Corral / So, the trading cards.
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:59:37 PM »
I bought the tin as a Christmas present for one of my friends, and I really want to tear into it. They're $2 for five cards, that's obnoxious! I know that if I buy one pack, I'll probably buy a box. About how much would I be out to complete a set? Would a box do it? I know that if I get started on them, I won't stop before I have them all, wanna figure out what my investment would be.

It's something I've been thinking about. Bring some camera gear, my printer, and my notebook. Do pictures, some 10-15 minute post on peoples shots, and get them prints, then and there. I figure some people have customs they really dig and would like some nice pictures and prints of them. I'd probably be thinking $7 for a shot without a print, $10 for an 8x10, and $12 for an 8x10 mounted to foamcore. Maybe offer to cut mats for people so all they'd have to do is get a 10x12 frame and pop it in. Does that sound about right, or would you be expecting to pay less?

Would anyone here who's going be into that, you think it could fly?

Pony Corral / So I went all out on a picture of Rarity.

After about four hours of making the hair and everything else look perfect, it came out like this;

Took care of all the stray hairs and any imperfections in her body, smoothed it out, and make it look good.

So when we buy the totally awesome Shining Armor (it's so hard not to spell it Armour) and Princess Cadence set from Target, Shining Armor comes out looking like this.

This is terrible. This will not do. I will not stand for such things. I set about fixing it, storming in my brains. The first plan was to give it a rinse and a wash with some conditioner, then pin it down with some paper towels and rubber bands like so.

That didn't work. Then I added some pomade to his hair and pinned it down again hoping that would make it less trolly. This worked worse.

This is terrible. This will not do. I had to fix it.

The actual plan; I decided to use my idea with rubber bands and paper towels to hold it down, but instead of just rinsing it, I was going to pour boiling water over his hair, and this worked! Lookit! He's so suave!

Okay, so, I'm sure that if you have a Shining Armor with troll hair, you'll want to do this. Here is how;

STEP THE FIRST; Give his hair a wash with some conditioner, while it's wet take a rat tail comb and split the front part of his down the middle. I didn't get a picture of this because I'm a bad person, sorry, but it's pretty self explanatory.

This step might not be necessary, but I did it protect his eye decals from having boiling water directly poured on them. I folded a piece of foil in a paper towel and wrapped it around his head, and kept his hair on top of it.

After this I poured some boiling water on his head, removed the paper towel/foil thing ASAP, then pinned down what will be his bangs with some paper towels and rubber bands, like so;

Let it dry, take it off, do some brushin', and bam, no more troll hair!

The rear part of the bangs on his left side got a bit wonky, but I imagine that's 'cause I didn't pin it down well enough when I had it wrapped up.

Here's the happy couple;

If you have any questions about the process or if I didn't explain something too well, let me know and I'll elaborate.

Also I'm on a new monitor that I haven't yet calibrated, so if the pictures are dark or bright or oversaturated, my bad.

Pony Corral / I'm a deboxer how did this happen.

Seriously. I haven't opened any ponies since August. I've got to work to do.

Also both the Favorites Pack and white Celestia are on sale at TRU. The Favorites is $30, as has been reported, and white Celestia is $18.

Pony Corral / Boy, that escalated quickly!

This happened overnight. Yesterday, I was futzing with my Styling Rarity who's right next to her, Star Catcher looked fine! Today, this!

I have no idea what happened. I scrubbed her down with a Magic Eraser like two months ago, and gave her a scrub with some dish soap. She was fine until today. Any idea what would cause this?

Pony Corral / So I made a lighting rig for my ponies.

Like most of my DIY lighting gear, it's held together with duct tape and zip ties, but it works!

Just took one quick shot with it, haven't really sat down and played with it yet.

There's three softboxes, one of them hanging up as a hairlight, and a snoot. Going to mess around with it later, take some more pictures.

Swaggin'. There's a Minty in there whose hair is still pink, I'm pretty stoked about that. Gotta clean up some of 'em, and I should get a count of who all I got.

Off Topic / Anyone else driven by strange compulsions?
« on: May 19, 2012, 01:23:26 AM »
I do photography. I'm good at it, I guess. People like my shots, people I don't like like my shots. People have licensed my shots, but I hate the pictures I take. I loathe them, every shot that doesn't come out well is my failure as a photographer. It's a reminder that I'm not good enough, I hate that. The reason I shoot is to take that one in a thousand shot that I like. That's one in a thousand of the ones I put in my 'dumps'. My dumps include shots that people might want to license, so I throw them all up in a gallery for them to browse. My portfolio has even fewer shots. About two of every 100 of my shots go into my portfolio. The 80% that don't make it into my dumps are never seen by anyone.

My motivation to make pictures is bizarre. I do it, I take the shots, I do all the editing and all the post, all hoping that I'll find that shot that gives me that rush, that makes me excited, that motivates to slough through the crap to get that elusive shot. I am driven by a compulsion to make that one in a thousand a shot, all to validate what I do as a photographer.

Anyone else driven by bizarre compulsions?

Here's a few of my galleries. I like ONE shot out of all of these, it's #24, in the Larkin Poe gallery. You're free to like 'em, I don't.

Pony Corral / I made a snoot for ponies.
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:01:44 PM »
A snoot? Why does that sound dirty? It's not! A snoot is something you use in studio photography. It's basically a tube that goes over a light source and focuses it's light into a narrower point. I was taking pictures of ponies tonight using a black background rather than a white one, took a shot of Luna, and thought the light made her look kinda like Batman.

I liked it, so I made a couple of snoots.

They are awesome, they can make for some pretty dramatic lighting.

This shot came out so good, I like it oodles.

So, snoots. They're easy to make, and can make your pony shots look better.

Go here; http://royalwedding.hubworld.com/ Click 'download party pack' on the bottom right.

Play the games too, they're cute, the Rarity one is a really in depth pony creator, the Dash game is cool, the AJ thing is you know what, you have a mouse, and eyes, you can play them, I don't need to explain them. But the party pack! That's the treat! It's got PDFs of hats, invites, a couple games (Pin the bouquet on Rarity) and it is generally full of awesome stuff.

It looks like they're trying to encourage people to have a wedding themed party for the year end finale, which if I were a bit younger and didn't have a Y chromosome, I would be all over.

Edit: Some of ya all are having trouble downloading the party pack, so I uploaded it to my server, snag it here! http://doctormowinckel.com/boogers/RoyalWeddingPartyPack.zip

Off Topic / Anyone have a Kindle Fire?
« on: March 29, 2012, 08:18:55 PM »
My new job has so much downtime I'm going bonkers, and am considering a Kindle Fire. It's primary function would be to watch Twit.TV and Netflix. I know it can handle Netflix, but can the browser handle Twit.TV, or is there a Twit.TV app? Googling this has resulted in frustration.
Also, how is the built in browser? Does it handle Flash? How is the soft keyboard? How much does it open up when you root it? I'd like to get some first hand info before I invest the $200.
