Pony Corral / Any Basic Fun retro G1 news for 2023?
« on: February 06, 2023, 10:23:24 PM »
It's been awhile since I have logged in to the arena, just been busy with a lot of RL stuff. Do we have any news or updates about new Basic Fun G1 Retro ponies for this year?

Pony Corral / Re: Poses you wish were used more often?

Which pony poses with limited use do you wish more ponies were made in?

For G1 poses, I really like the sitting and rearing poses, because they're more dynamic and different than most pony poses. I understand their rare use because it limits play possibilities, but I think they're really cute, and would love a shelf full of different ponies all sitting adorably.

I agree. I really like the sitting and rearing poses. They add variety and are more dynamic. After all, they showed them jumping and rearing, etc on the back cards all the time.

Well I'm very sorry to say this Katrine, but I'm afraid you have no choice but to get to work on building your ponies that pink castle, complete with meadow, drawbridge, and moat. Impractical in this economy I know.

I think we all need one of those!

The nice thing about baby ponies is they fit nicely on little shelves. Since you have a small number of ponies overall, one small bookcase would probably work for displaying. As far as the back cards and accessories I would suggest under-bed storage if you have space. Otherwise a box in your closet if you can. I have a small 3 shelf bookcase in our office (sits under the window) with about 50 G1 ponies and a Megan doll spread across two of the shelves. I also have clear plastic risers in them to create levels so that the adult ponies fit under the front of the risers with babies on top.

I started to look at the pony thing but then got too distracted looking at the Care Bear Cousins Plush. So cute!

Off Topic / Re: Disney +

I'd like to see House of Mouse, the Aladdin tv series, the Wuzzles and the Tarzan series on Disney+. Would be cool if they put Fluppy Dogs on there too. Saw it once a long time ago when I was a kid.

Somewhere at my parents house there is a VCR tape with the Fluppy Dogs one hour animated tv special that we taped off the tv. For those who don't know, Fluppy Dogs was a tv special made and aired just once, Thanksgiving 1986. It was supposed to be a pilot episode for a new animated series but the ratings were so low that the show got cancelled. The merchandise though was widely available in stores during that time period.

Aladdin the animated series was pretty good and I really wish they would release that as a DVD set as well as the Little Mermaid series. I had hopes they would after they made the dvd sets for the rest of the early Disney Afternoon line up, but alas no.

Curious, have you tried washing it to see what happens?
If you haven't, I would just take one dread-lock group and wash it carefully to see what the hair does. Assuming that it is also all knotted/tangled you could also try a conditioner on the one section to see what happens and if it could be combed through.

I haven't tried it. I should, just to see what happens. It can't get any worse!

I would try washing it at this point, but maybe only one section first, just in case something unexpected happens like it breaking or pulling out. As you said, can't get much worse and there is always the possibility it may improve it.

Pony Corral / Re: New series of Toy Mini Brands has G4 ponies!

I want to collect these sooooooooooo baaaaaaaaaaaaaad but they're expensive and I have no rooooooooooom.

Yes they are, and then you get duplicates. Unfortunately I have a weakness for Mini Brands......must buy more. I need to find some of the new foodie ones. For storage, I keep mine in little craft boxes. My question though is how to tell the difference in the toy balls wave 1 vs wave 2. Usually when they do a whole new series the balls are a different color or have different color wrappers. The toy series 1 was an aqua wrapper, series 2 was pink. Too bad they didn't show an example of the unopened wave 2 ball.

Maybe a combination. Small bookcase or shelf next to the wall there and the rest in the organizer in the closet. You can always rotate what you have out on display. You can get some narrow shelves or bookcases at Walmart or Target or of course Ikea. Just depends on what you have close to you, what you want to spend and how you want to use your space. We have two different small ones in our office. One small bookcase is 25" wide x 12" deep x 31" high (had to fit under the window ledge). Next to it we have a slightly smaller Ikea Besta Frame (narrow version) which is about 23 1/2" wide x 8" deep x 25" high that I have designed as another shelving unit.

Pony Corral / Re: Ponies as a child vs ponies as an adult
« on: August 09, 2022, 11:52:25 PM »
Hmm, interesting question.  I think my preferences have stayed pretty much the same as far as the ponies themselves.  I would say I liked accessories and playsets more as a kid, while as an adult I'm more into just collecting the ponies themselves.  This make sense given I was never really into COLLECTING ponies as a kid, just into playing with them, whereas now it is the opposite.

I agree with you on the accessories and playsets. As a kid, my older cousin was given a Show Stable one Christmas and I was so jealous because I really wanted one. So as an adult when I first got back into ponies it was like "I WANT a Show Stable" and found an inexpensive one (this was many years ago) on Ebay with most of the accessories. It was fun for a little bit to finally have one, and then I wanted a Paradise Estate, thankfully did NOT get one (kept being outbid beyond what I was willing to spend the multiple times I tried to get one years ago). Truthfully though, the Show Stable spends almost all of it's time sitting on a shelf in the closet, with the accessories packed away in a box. At this point I'd rather have the ponies themselves rather than the whole playset.

I have had my mind changed as an adult though in regards to the various "gimmicks" that were used by Hasbro. Initially when I started finding G1's at the swap meet a couple years ago I didn't really think I wanted any of the ones like brush n' grows, happy tails, twinkle eyes to name a few. After seeing them in person though and holding them in my hands, they can be pretty cute too. I have NOT changed my mind though about those Beddy Bye Eye ponies. I always thought they were a bit creepy as a kid and they were my least favorite baby ponies, I had Baby Ribbon BBE and BBE Tiddly Winks. I have only bought one BBE as an adult and that was Baby Half Note.

I have her and her bushwoolie. I got both of them from a swap meet a couple years ago. I also bought her a reproduction wand from a seller on Ebay. I am not a fan of tinsel hair in general, but she was too lovely to pass up.

Understandable to feel that way and I get you. In the last year or so I started downsizing my massive Little Mermaid collection as well as my Barbie dolls and sometimes the prices things are going for hurts. These are just my few thoughts below.

1) The thing with stores is they all have to make a profit. So generally speaking, they will always offer you way less than half and usually you will always get more if you take store credit.

2) MLP is a particular market. I have been to LOADS of "Comic & Collectible" shops with my husband (he collects Transformers) and more often than not, they will have that sort of stuff but not anything MLP or maybe just a couple things or just POPS.

3) If they allow to bring in store (and you lived close enough) you could try again but simply pick out a few of the pieces that you think have the most value. They may just not be interested in dealing with the entire lot.

4) Ebay is a very usable option. Advantages are that you can put things up for sale at the prices you want (keeping in mind current sale values of course) and you can put them up at your own pace. Sometimes though it may take a little while for things to sell. I find it is always easiest to start with the things that you can easily part with verses parts of your collection that are  more meaningful.

Pony Corral / Re: Painted/stained shelves and displaying toys
« on: August 02, 2022, 02:21:04 PM »
When I stained my shelves it had a semi glossy top coat in it. It was an all-in-one. The wood stain didn't transfer to my ponies at all, but some of my ponies got stuck to the top coat. Nothing transferred when I was able to pull them off. I should mention I live in a very hot and humid climate and my room was the hottest one in the house, plus my ponies sat on those shelves for years, some never being picked up.

Similar weather to you, just not as humid. My shelves covered almost an entire wall (they were adjustable, so I had them set at very specific heights). I had about 75 doll boxes on them as well as about a hundred plastic toys and figures of various sizes. Since it was such a massive display I only deep cleaned it twice a year where I removed EVERYTHING. Other wise it just got a quick duster over it. Sometimes a few might be momentarily stuck, but came off with a gentle pull. The same thing happens though with glass or other ceramics if items are never moved for long periods of time. There is an open (no doors) corner shelf built into my parents kitchen and it is filled with all this old glass and ceramics from my grandmother and great grandmothers, etc. It rarely gets a thorough cleaning, usually just a quick once over with a duster (you have to use a tall step ladder to get to it). Every few years it gets a deep clean and all the glass gets taken down and hand washed (if the piece can stand it) and then returned. Usually when we do that many pieces are "stuck" to the shelves (these are painted wood) and just require a gentle tug.

Pony Corral / Re: Accidently threw it out (or donated it) thread
« on: August 02, 2022, 12:36:00 AM »
So this wasn't accidental just what I think was a dumb decision now but when I was in my late teens I threw out almost all of my Disney Adventures magazines. I really regret that now. Can't even find any in used bookstores and since I bought them so frequently from the grocery store checkouts,  my parents bought me a subscription to them so I had a lot of them starting with the Pocahontas issue. I do at least still have the  Brother Bear issue as well as the Lion King 1995 and Simba's Pride issues thanks to someone on a Lion King forum and the large Lion King issue that came out when the Lion King Special edition dvd did.

My husband still has his Disney Adventures magazines. They take up more than a shelf in one of our bookcases. Due to the nature of them (paper magazines) I'd wager you were not the only one and that many people threw them out / recycled them so they would be difficult to find in a used bookstore. Ebay however has hundreds of them because of course they do.
