ive noticed recently that my kittycat has been keeping his mouth open after meowing :huh: i have 2 other cats and never seen them do this ?
i was hoping someone could tell me if this is normal :huh: ? or should i take him to see a vet ?

Hmm..I know my cat does some odd things but never seen him do that one. Well he does walk around with his tongue hanging out of his mouth often but he has done it for years.
Is his breathing labored at all when he does this? If not maybe he has a tooth bothering him or it's just part of his personality! It's hard to say with cats but if you are worried, I would take him to the vet.

haha my black and white cat does the tongue thing and i think its adorable! hmm his breathing doesn't seem labored to me.. hes not panting (even tho the weather has been really hot!) thanks for the advice.. i think ill atleast ring the vet tomorrow and ask!

This. You can't know what your cat wants as he can't tell you. He maybe just hot, he may have something else. If he doesn't seem to be otherwise strange or anything I'd first call the vet before taking him there. If you are told there might be anything, have him looked at.
How long has this kept happening?

No matter what kinds of answers you get here, take him to the vet. Every kitty is different and handles pain and things differently.
Pickles leaves his mouth open after he meows. However Pickles is also deaf.

Anytime your animal starts behaving oddly for THAT individual animal, it's a good idea to have them checked out. Even things that are completely normal for one animal, could mean trouble for a different one.

Yeah, if it's not normal for him, something changed and you should find out what! My kitty leaves her mouth open a lot, especially when sniffing. I think it's to enhance the scents.

It could be any number of things, but everyone else here is right. If it's out of character for him and something he just started, take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have tooth problems. What do you feel? Go with your gut. You know your cat best and will know more than the vet if he is distressed or just being a goofy feline.
If it's totally normal for him and he doesn't seem to be hurting, he could be just be smelling things. My cat does this often and will sit somewhere with her mouth half open. Cats have extra organs on the roof of their mouth (Jacobson's organs) to help with smelling things. They open their mouths to draw the scent in and get a better idea of what it is. Hopefully, that's all he's doing!

I think at least a phone call to the vet is in order to see what they say :) It could be any number of things from overheating to a tooth ache.

thanks guys! i rang the vet and he has suggested watching him eat and having a good look down his throat and in his mouth.. its been happening for around 3-4 weeks.. ive booked him in for a visit just to double check.

my dogs have done that before when they have a stick or something stuck in their mouth... i hope all goes well! :)
