This is awesome! I'm really excited to see how this progresses. The petri dishes are already looking so gnarly!

Pony Corral / Re: Tips for Shipping Packaging?
« on: November 11, 2015, 05:25:38 AM »
If it's not an expensive or fragile pony I will:

- Wrap it in a sandwich bag (I use medium sized ones so I can actually wrap the pony a bit)
- Pop it in a bubble envelope
- Seal the bubble envelope with tape if it's being shipped internationally

I have never had a pony get damaged this way. You should never put anything naked into a bubble envelope as they can potentially get torn or wet. A roll of sandwich bags costs me about 80p and lasts for months.

For anything expensive or likely to get damaged:

- Bubble wrap the pony and put in a plastic bag
- Line the shipping box with a sheet of bubble wrap (provides another layer of padding, stops the pony touching the sides of the carton and provides some minor waterproofing - I've had parcels that look like they swam across an ocean)
- Once the pony is in the box I pad all excess space with something (you should do this for anything you send in a box). I keep a stash of recycled packing peanuts for this, but as long as the pony is completely wrapped in bubble wrap you can pad the box with newspaper. Newspaper print will rub off on a lot of things and can easily stain plastic, so it's important to ensure the pony is snug in its own packaging if you do this.

Pony Corral / Re: Fluffy stuff at Primark

Aw, I was just in a Primark not too long ago and they didn't have them in then!

The scalpers already have plenty of them on eBay for nearly double the price. Hopefully they'll be some left when I can get to a Primark next. >.>

They're running this in the UK too but Muffins is out of stock (DJ isn't out here yet). :(

Princess Cadance and Princess Twilight Sparkle are available though.

Pony Corral / Re: Your last g1 find in "the wild"?

At the beginning of the year I was just strolling along when suddenly I saw a basket of G1s in a local charity shop window. I stood there for a second because I was honestly awestruck. Of course I then rushed inside to buy them, panicking the whole time in case someone had somehow managed to get there before me. I was successful of course and managed to get the lot for around £10. Don't remember all of them and I've misplaced the photo, but included were Newborn Twins Bunkie/Fleecy and Speckles/Fluffy and their comb, Trucker/4 Speed, BBE Baby Half Note, a Petite, UK Applejack, and a bunch of miscellaneous combs including a Fairy Tail Bird one. There was also a 1988 Annual which I don't collect, but it was the year I was born so I figured it was a good luck charm or something.

Pony Corral / Re: Tell us your most Devastating pony story - 2
« on: August 27, 2015, 02:04:24 PM »
When I was 5 my ponies were hand-me-downs from my cousins. Included in that group was Fireball (whom I renamed "Firebum", because he had a fireball on his bum - 5 year old logic!) and he was my favourite.
I took him with me on a family holiday to Australia, and while we were staying at a resort there I took him to a play area. I ended up leaving the play area without him and by the time I realised and we rushed back he had gone. I really hope the kid who picked up him appreciated him as much as I did!

What sucks is that I have managed to obtain two separate Fireballs since and both had cut tails that the seller hadn't mentioned in the description. :throw:

I have also since since sold, lost or given away most of my childhood ponies. I only have Brightglow (who has one stripe missing from her hair after I stupidly cut it out when I was younger) and Pony Bride left. However, when cleaning out their childhood rooms one of my cousins found that she had some ponies she hadn't given to me! It was Baby Gusty and a baby sea pony and they're in wonderful condition. I guard them with my life now.

Pony Corral / Re: G3 Experts I need YOU!

The birthstone and birth flower-themed G3s are still quite elusive. I'm after the two March ones and they don't pop up that often. They weren't sold widely.

Thistle Whistle is still uncommon but her price has plummeted like a lot of G3s.

Anchors Away is not as rare or expensive as she used to be. I've come across her going for around $10 on eBay.

Pony Corral / Re: G4 Princesses on ebay - please tell me they're real!
« on: February 27, 2015, 09:16:58 AM »
They seem legitimate (they are retail-released characters) but Chinese MLP sellers often sell factory rejects. It's probable that they're real but with some minor flaws.

I once sold a G3 Valenshy to the musician Chris Singleton. She proceeded to turn up in one of his music videos, which I found mildly exciting.

Pony Corral / Re: What Makes You Lose Interest In Ponies? . . .
« on: January 24, 2015, 02:18:23 PM »
I don't actively collect like I used to (lack of space and money mostly, but also waning interest in collecting ponies in general) and only occasionally buy G4 ponies that spark my interest. With all of the non-stop repeats, dolls and US exclusives in the toy line I'm almost completely done with it. -_- G4 started off really interesting and then burned out very quickly.

The overall interest in ponies is still there though, don't get me wrong. :P

Pony Corral / Re: G3 Tinsel Issue
« on: January 24, 2015, 01:45:46 PM »
I wouldn't recommend putting leave-in product in a pony's hair. Over time there might be a chemical reaction that could potentially ruin the hair.

Tinsel is just special, no matter what generation. My technique to tame it is as follows:

1. Gently wash pony's hair with conditioner. You can comb it through at this point too - use a metal pet comb for best results, but don't comb too hard and try not to pull the tinsel.
2. Pat the hair dry with a paper towel so it's still wet but not soaking. Don't use a hairdryer as heat damages pony hair and you don't want the hair to be dry anyway.
3. Carefully wrap the pony's mane around its neck and wrap the tail around a back leg. The choice of back leg doesn't really matter, but in more complicated poses you can just wrap it around whatever leg's easiest for you.
4. Cut some long strips of plain white paper towel. Never use coloured or patterned paper towel as the dye can sometimes leach into the pony! (Been there, done that, there's a G1 Italian Windy out there with a new yellow spot.)
5. Take the strips and wrap them gently around the mane and tail. They should hold in place by themselves if the hair is still wet, but you can use a tiny amount of sellotape (stick it to the paper towel, not the pony) or a hair tie to hold the strips in place in need be.
6. Put the pony somewhere safe and leave it to dry overnight.
7. If the paper towel strips are dry then gently remove them. If not then wait a little longer.
8. Voila! You should have a nice neat hairstyle with much tamer tinsel. Now place the pony somewhere where it won't get knocked over, or the tinsel will come free from its moorings and you might have to start again.

I've used this method on tons of ponies with tinsel and as long as the tinsel is in good condition it should work. Keep in mind though that tinsel is evil and mastering it is an arcane art. :P

Pony Corral / Re: Mistagged Ty Beanie Rainbow Dash oddity! Now with pics
« on: August 04, 2014, 04:50:58 AM »
TY have produced mistagged Beanie Babies in the past. There was the case way back in the day with Iggy and Rainbow where they were sometimes found with each other's tags. It did add a small amount to their value, but I have no clue what the market is doing now.

Either way it's an interesting find you've got there. :)

The Heinz pasta tins that used to have Applejack on the label now feature Pinkie Pie. The shapes themselves are the same but the ingredients have changed slightly I think.

I'm guessing the Applejack ones are being phased out. If you wanted one I'd suggest picking one up soon. :P
