I have a merpony I plan on customizing and I was wondering if there was such a thing as clear irridescent paint? I'd like to make her silver with a rainbow sheen, like the inside of some seashells. :)

Hi !
Maybe you should look in a nail polish instead of paint. I've found this iridescent top coat :
https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shop/uo-iridescent-top-coat-nail-polish
And a bunch of pearly nail polish as a bonus. =D (Don't listen to the lady, the first ones are more pearly than iridescent)

Well, the problem is maybe the price, but you can customize anything in your house ! And also your nails, of course. Or make a bunch of flutter wings with plastic bottles and the iridescent top coat.
Hope it's good for you. Have a nice day ! =)

Thanks for the suggestions, but I was under the impression that nail polish damaged plastic toys?

I don't think it's that nail polish damages toys, but it doesn't hold up long term at all.
This is what I've been looking at using but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Thanks. That looks like it could work. Hopefully it'll work on plastic too. :)

Hi !
Maybe you should look in a nail polish instead of paint.
Nail Polish is designed for short term use and contains a lot of nasty chemicals you do NOT want to permanently apply to a toy. It yellows, goes sticky, and may react with other dyes, UV and paints. Nail polish is a terrible choice for customizing ponies.
Sure it's cheap, but it's definitely no bargain.
There are a number of artist grade paints out there that produce iridescent finishes, but I haven't tried any of them myself except for the purple from this brand: Jo Sonja (https://www.amazon.com/Sonjas-Artist-Acrylic-Iridescent-Turquoise/dp/B00A6W9TXG/). It's subtle but nice. Not the same kind of iridescence as say, flutter pony wings though.

Nail polish will go nasty over time :(
The Liquitex paint is good stuff :bigups: I've used some of the paints and the pearl finish is nice (I might have to take a look at the iridescent paint ;) )
Love pkw xxx

NEVER use nail polish for customs, not only will you wreck the pony or toy in general your using but the polish will flake off no matter what sealer you use and it can cause plastic break down or chemical reactions with the plastic and that's not good

I like mixing powdered pigments with clear varnish, but I don't have a rainbow sheen powder. Maybe nail powders mixed with varnish can work? I've been meaning to experiment with nail powder instead of powdered pigments but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
For silver and rainbow you could try something like this
https://www.amazon.com/PrettyDiva-Holographic-Rainbow-Unicorn-Manicure/dp/B01LAV3O6E/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1515285597&sr=8-4&keywords=rainbow+nail+powder
again, I don't know if it'll work but it's worth a shot?

I finally found what I've been looking for at Michaels! Its pretty inexpensive too. Its called Irridescent Medium by a brand called Artist's Loft.
It gives an irridescent sheen and can be mixed with any paint.

Was about to suggest the artist loft stuff, also have something by Martha Stewart somewhere on my shelves that's similar.
Anyone ever dabble with "Spectraflare" in customs before? Guess it's a powder pigment they put in car paint to give it a holographic rainbow sheen. Have some... somewhere... But been too chicken to play with it. Lol

That sounds awesome and I love seeing cars like that. They are the coolest.
