Title: Brother, can you spare a dime?
Post by: SourdoughStomper on October 11, 2016, 09:16:02 AM
I do not often have change on me. The consequence of owning a debit card, no doubt. I sometimes wish I had cash on me instead of just a card. :money:

That said, I have been known to use spare change for the parking meter. Or to give to a child who wants to buy a small treat. I will also put it in the offering plate on Sunday.

What about you? :)

I have a jar that I put it in, and then when it is filled up I use it to get something I wouldn't usually buy for myself. Usually, I cash my jar in right before an anime convention so I can go a little wild in the dealers room haha.  Currently, however, the jar I am filling now will be cashed in for Breyerfest this summer

Honestly, I get a little bit obsessed with filling my jar to the point where, if for example sometimes if I get tea at Starbucks, and the total was $3.50 or something and I paid with a $5, rather than throwing the 50 cents in the tip jar, I'll put in the dollar instead so I can keep the quarters.  A bit silly, maybe, but hey, I get to fill my jar faster, and someone gets a bigger tip so it all works out in the end!

Granted, a lot of the time I have trouble remembering to get the change out of my purse, so right now my purse weighs soooo much because of all the loose change that's fallen out of my wallet.  This happens every so often and whenever I finally get around to putting the coins in the jar, I'm amazed by how much less my purse weighs!!   :P

With my job, I end up with too much of it, and my bank doesn't accept change unless it's rolled. I easily exceed $50 in coins at a time and my wallet barely closes as a result. So I use it if I'm making a purchase under $20 and don't want to use credit (which is my main form of payment). At least we don't have pennies anymore so I can't be 'that guy'.  :P

Oh, and of course, I use change for bus fare.

My pennies go into my childhood piggy bank. I don't know what I plan to do with them yet. Quarters go into my laundry bag because I need them for laundry. The rest Go in a drawer that I will eventually cash in if I ever get a hold of some sleeves to roll them.

I selected that I "save it, but cash it in regularly."

I have this triceratops bank that I got at the Smithsonian gift shop when I was like 5, and I put any loose change into it - whether it's change from paying cash for something, or change I found lying about (yes, I'm one of those people who picks up random coins they see in the street, lol. It adds up!)

Once my bank is full, I take it to my credit union's local branch. They have a coin dump thing where you enter in your account number, then dump all the coins into the machine. The machine counts it up and automatically deposits the amount to the account you specified, with no usage fee. I love it! So much more convenient than rolling all the coins then standing in line for a teller to deposit them, lol.

Like most people these days, I use plastic 99% when shopping for whatever. Here in Sweden, we (the government) strive for a cash free society, which is probably easiest for the younger generations. But I do get change from time to time, mostly after recycling soda/water bottles which you in return get money for which I save in a jar for sometime up to a year. Once the jar is nearly full, I deposit the money into my savings account.

I have a Littlest Pet Shop plastic piggy bank from the 90s I store all my change in. Once its full I cash it in for a toy haha. I use all my extra laundry money, spare change, and any single bills I end up with. Last time it was about $50 and a great surprise :D

I keep my spare change in a "paint it yourself" piggy bank.. or kitty bank, rather, since it's shaped like a cat. :B I painted it to look like one of my characters.

I have a debitcard and rarely uses cash. Several years ago I put all my change in a bucket and when it was full I walked into the bank and deposited them into my savingsaccount. But as the banks thrives to be cashfree nowadays it's not really an option. I usually bring whatever change I have to the fleemarkets and pay any finds with them. This year we're getting new coins so I've been really careful not to have too many lying around so it wont be a problem when the old ones get invalid next year.

For the most part, I just use my card, but whenever I have cash, I'll just put the change in a coin pouch in my glovebox. Sometimes I'll take the pennies out of it and put them all in a piggy bank.

I use a mix of cash and debit. I use to use mostly cash, but after getting a new bank account I find myself using debit more. It really depends what I'm buying and what options a shopping location has available.

The only real downside to debit is that you have to pay for it. Knowing what it's actually costing you, and making sure you're not paying a ton of unnecessary fees, is key.

My literal change, I dump it in my purse. I then use it in the vending machines at work for snacks and sodas, or other foods like nasty soy burgers when I am too lazy to go out for lunch. XD Those Big Az burgers are disgusting but they fill you up. And they don't look nearly as good as the picture.

I try to save my quarters for things that need them like parking, but I use my smaller change pretty often if something only needs like 20 cents or less I always have it.

I use my change unless I get a few too many pennies, at which point I put them in a jar. At one point I had over $20 in pennies in it.

I have a piggy bank (literally a coin bank shaped like a pig because why not) and all our spare change goes in there. I do keep some on me in a coin purse, but every few years I cash in the piggy bank at the actual bank.

We don't have change often b/c we pay most things with debit/credit - usually just from laundry. I'll save up the small stuff over the year for when the ice cream truck comes around in the summer, since it only takes cash.

Quarters used to go to laundry, but now I have a washer and dryer so they are saved for the vending machine. Pennies always go to charity. I save up my pennies until I find a place I can "dump" them -- the last time I was at a wildlife reserve they had one of those boxes for cash donations and I think I gave them several dollars in pennies!

I use both cash and credit cards.  I put all my loose change in a piggy bank.  When my goddaughter visits for the summer or Christmas, we go to the coin sort at the bank and I let her spend it as an allowance.

I picked 'use it when buying things', which is true most of the time, although we also have a small jar. I call it bus money. :D But I rarely remember to use any of it, or put my change in, so it doesn't really fill up.

I mostly use the card but I try to keep a small amount of cash with me at all times, for some reason I prefer to use the card only for purchases over 5€. I buy a lot of small stuff (snacks, bus tickets etc.) so coins are no problem.

It's called the carboot sale fund :)

Although I also put change in charity jars, I prefer to do charity stuff online and I don't really like getting my purse out on the street in London, so not so much this any more unless it's a pot on the till when I'm buying something in a shop or a restaurant.

I used to need it for the bus but now I have my pass and most of the time if I need to use a bus outside of the hours the pass is valid, I'm in London, and that's a cash-free zone; it's all contactless or oyster.

So yep. It goes in the carboot sale fund.

What change I do get usually goes into a jar and hangs out sometimes I roll it up into the coin tubes but haven't gotten around to taking them in. I hate the idea of having to pay extra to have change converted into bills and most banks in the US won't take change in. So lame....

I have a digital bank jar that counts my coins. I also save all of the one dollar bills from when I get change. I did this when I was younger and ended up having several hundred bucks, which I put in a savings account until the time I had to buy college books.

Pennies and such I keep in my wallet and try to spend them again as soon as I can. I know that if I take them out, I'll never be bothered to put them back into my wallet and spend them. Self-service check-outs at supermarkets are great for getting rid of spare change. No one looks at you funny if you use lots of coins, and you're not being a nuisance by making the cashier count everything.

20p, 50p, £1 and 2 go in a little pile on my bookshelf, to be spent at car boot sales and in charity shops.
