Customs / Re: Custom Twinkle Eye help?
« on: January 30, 2022, 04:56:15 AM »
I'm just in the middle of casting my first set of TE's taken from a Sweetstuff bait.

Aiming to do casts of the TE ponies too, with the eye holes too, so I can make TE customs whenever. If casting the head with the eye hole doesn't go to plan, I'll look for  leatherworking hole punch that's the right diameter instead. I've previously found just sticking on rhinestones somehow doesn't look "right", even after sanding the eyeball down a bit...  hence this project.

Once I've perfected the process, I can let you know, and maybe send you a pr of TE's in your chosen resin colour.

The aim is to insert them from the inside, then secure with hot glue. Then mix nail art pearly pigment powder with clear sealant, and apply a thin layer over the outside of the eyes.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Hasbro released every g1 set as part of the anniversary releases! Imagine being able to get hold of rapunzel once again!

Wanted! / WTB G1 Pegasus, Flutters and Unicorn Bait
« on: January 26, 2022, 02:44:39 PM »
Just getting my materials together to bring a few custom concepts to life, and have trawled through ebay and etsy for decently priced bait g1's.

I have enough earth ponies and babies to last me a while, but I am looking mainly for pegasus, unicorns (not majesty's pose) and flutters.

Happy to pay UK postage.

Many thanks

Hey thanks for the recommendation on the tinsel, much appreciated!

Yeah I dunno about Dropbox, only recently started using it for my nature photography whilst on holiday.

Pony Corral / Restoration Project

Hey, so long time lurker here!

Over the last couple of years, I've been in a bit of a flunk, and my other half said I needed a new hobby, so he has graciously retrieved my baits and paints that I started to get together a few back.  (...had to put it all away in his parents' attic when we moved in with friends briefly).

I shall do a go over on my previous attempts from years ago, but in the meantime I have an ambitious project to start me off.

I won a poor Princess Sparkle as part of a bundle on Ebay, fibre optics fallen most of the way out the crown, LED missing from the component, missing saddle, bow dimmer switch broken and missing, and tinsel absolutely unsalvageable.  I would post pics but confused on how to from Dropbox!

I have a working theory of how to replace the electronics, can make new saddle and bow dimmer swtich, and but what would people suggest about the hair and body?

There a dark blue marker pen near the battery compartment that I just KNOW is going to be a pain to get rid off.  Do I put a clear blue glaze on her to help blend the mark in?

As for the hair, the tinsel is just shot! Any pointers on comparable tinsel so I can rehair her please?

Many thanks!

UPDATE:

So, I have given Mystic and Baby Parasol a couple more layers of paint, using Artiste acrylic paint, which dries quickly to a lovely matte finish. Also, after deliberating with the pony formerly known as Tropical Breeze, I believe her transformation into Mistral wasn't successful because she is actually meant to be Thunderhead.  So, after repainting her to a slightly cooler and lighter purple than Mystic, she received some indigo flowing, curling breezes all over her body.  I then used greaseproof paper from good old Poundland to trace her cutie mark on either side of the paper. I then used this template to transfer a pencil print of her thunder cloud mark, and mixed some grey paint in with a bit of Daler-Rowney matte varnish, and filled out her clouds with a frayed toothpick, sculpting the drying paint into "fluffs".  I then decided to use a simple gel pen (a throwback from my 14 yr old custom attempts!) to create the lightning bolts, as I feel so much more comfortable with a pen/pencil than I do with a brush.  Once I felt that had all dried sufficiently, I used the Daler-Rowney matte varnish sealant all over Thunderhead's head and body.

I feel she wanted to be Thunderhead all along when I look at her, and now I just gotta brave it and re-do her eyes (bricking it, to be honest!), and then do Baby Parasol's and Mystic's cutie marks, before ordering the hair next month.

Doing full body paints on these 3, really makes me feel like I want to try airbrushing for my next batch, as getting into the nooks and crannies with a brush, I have found so so tricky, frustrating and not-at-all enjoyable.  My main concern is whether the paints I have already invested in, would be suitable for airbrushing.  I know I will have to use a thinner, but I guess it'll be a matter of trial and error to get the right ratio.

Anyhoo, thanks for reading

What do people think of my lore for my custom additional Rainbow ponies, I've thought of?  I have Sunsilk, a pastel yellow earth pony who is always happy, no matter what the weather; Swiftly, a bright blue pegasus, she is one of the fastest flyers and one day hopes to challenge Whizzer to a friendly race.  She is highly competitive and at times can be rather impatient; Heat Shimmer, a hot pink earth pony whose favourite days are when the Sun is beating down hotly, giving her the perfect excuse to play in the Waterful with her friends; and lastly Daydreamer, a pastel peach unicorn who loves to pass the days letting her mind wander as she gazes at the reflections of the clouds in the eddies of the stream.  Her unicorn power is to lull anyone into a light sleep.

Here's the lore I've come up with for them:

As the other Rainbow Ponies were on their way to join the other little ponies on a seaside holiday, Starflower was feeling a little sorry for herself because she was feeling unwell.  Feeling lonely and having the sniffles, she decided to visit the Moochick for a remedy and winked out.  Starflower winked in outside the Moochick’s cottage.  Feeling dizzy and weak from such a simple magical task as winking out, she gathered her senses, and called out to the Moochick.  “Hello, hello! Is that Starflower? Oh why, yes it is! Hello, hello! How are you my dear? Aren’t you supposed to be on holiday with the others? Come sit, come sit!”  Starflower sneezed again, then let the Moochick usher her inside the cottage.  “Thankyou Mr Moochick, yes everyone else has gone to the beach, but I seem to have caught a cold, and I feel quite unwell, and I feel just so lonely on my own at Paradise Estate.  I was wondering if you had a tea for help me feel a little better?”  The Moochick got up from his chair and started to rummage around his jars and pots, “Yes, I think I can make something up in a jiffy.  Habbit! Where’s the, the, oh what is it called? The dried pink flowers I got from the Grundles during the last Harvest Moon? The echinacea! Where is it Habbit?!”

After about ten minutes of scrambling about and boiling up some herbs, Starflower was given a steamy mug of tea, which she sipped and instantly felt her sniffles start to dissipate.  As she finished her tea, she lamented to the Moochick and Habbit how lonely she was feeling since the other ponies had gone to the seaside.  The Moochick had a gleam in his eye and told her that she herself had the key to resolving her loneliness, reminded her that now she was better, her magic would be returning to its original strength.  He looked outside and beckoned Starflower over to the window and pointed out the milky ring around the moon whilst handing her a quartz crystal point.  “Ah, now my dear, tonight is a special night indeed.  When a moon halo appears, all unicorn’s powers are amplified until sunrise.  Place this crystal in the ground at the foot of the Waterfall, and make a wish.  Your usual wishing powers will be multiplied.  Go my dear, make your own happiness.”

At the Moochick’s advice, Starflower winked to the Waterfall, and did as he instructed her to do so.  She wished hard for her loneliness to be alleviated.  A wondrous moonbow suddenly appeared, and down it from the velvety darkness of the night sky, came four ponies who Starflower did not recognise.  They all had rainbow hair like her own, and a peachy unicorn greeted her.  “Thankyou for calling us home.  We have been wondering the ethereal pathways for such a long time, we could not remember the way home.  Ponyland has changed much since we were last here.  You are the first other pony we have met in a very long time, may we know your name, and may we ask where the little ponies call home now in Dream Valley?”  Starflower was glad at having met four new friends, and proceeded to lead them to Paradise Estate, brimming with excitement.

What do people think?

I don't keep track of values I'm afraid, but bearing in mind the addition of postage, I'd pay up to £12 for a single pony like her xxx

Right so, after creating a really cool marbled effect on Mistral's body  and head by dry brushing a lighter, more thinned down colour into the still-wet base layer of paint, I only went and screwed up her cutie mark! So I'm going to strip her down and start her again.

However Baby Parasol and Mystic are coming along nicely.  Initially Mystic's body colour dried to such a deep purple, she almost looked black! So yesterday I closed the practice for 45 minutes to nip to Clarke's Stationers and got a brighter purple in the Artiste acrylic brand.  Really impressed with that type of paint, although it did dry even if I thinned it down, so I had to be speedy! Mystic is lovely with a nice matte finish too!

Shall attempt Mystic and Baby Parasol's cutie marks later this afternoon - fingers crossed!!

Lovely.  I'd been toying with the possibility of a Baby Wind Whistler, but since Wind Whistler is one of my favourites, I feel like I really need to hone my skills to do her justice.  But after checking yours out, my first custom baby pegasus I think is going to be Baby Wind Whistler, and give it a go. Thanks for sharing xxx

Hi, I don't think I have anything of interest for you, so would you be open to selling Bangles, as my Hair Do Starlight is just dying to have one of her friends join her in my herd

looks good so far!
yay for customizing!

and yes, Modge Podge will work. However, even MATTE will still look glossy ;)
use water with it to help it go on smoother and not so thick

Thanks for the tips.  I also started on Baby Parasol (a baity Baby Ember) and Mystic (baity Posey), a purple Earth pony from my Fortune Tellers set.  Each of the four Fortune Teller ponies is a master of a different art of divination.  Mystic's asrt of divination premonition through touch.  She also gets prophetic dreams on rare occasions, and is mildly telepathic.

I'm really struggling to get the last of a bait Moonstone's mane out (absolute sh*tloads of glue in there!) but once she's all de-haired, I'll start painting her lilac to become Midnight Dream, of the Night Guardian unicorns.

When I've completed the body paints and cutie marks of my first batch of customs, I'll seal them and then buy a bulk order of hair from Retro Dolls, and start the re-hairing process.

Eeek! Excited!

UPDATE: my old boss, who's really into Warhammer told me of a UK site where they might do Dullcote at a reasonable price, AND THEY DO!! So when applying the Dullcote, does it need cutting and thinning like other varnishes sometimes do?
