Post by: Aflame on September 11, 2022, 04:39:55 AM
York trip day 1 Went on honeymoon to York at last as its years since the proper holiday I we had took 4 hours by train so had a rest in the hotel on arrival it is just down the road from the micklegate one of the 4 gates in to the city and in the past is where criminals heads would be put on spikes as an example ! we then went on a ghost walk as york is the mot haunted city in Europe ,and as its getting close to halloween im going to tell abridged versions of the stories if you dont want to read them skip to day 2 :)
The first one was about a little girl that is some times seen at the small window of a house called “the plague house” she had a rash that looked like the start of the bubonic plague so her parents Locked her in the room and left during the night painting a Red Cross on the door warning people there was disease inside so no one would enter. When the girl was no longer seen at the small window. The plague doctors went in to get the body but when the found the girl there was no sign of the plague on her body she had been suffering from chicken pox she doesn’t appear at the window as much now but the last occupants reported hearing sobbing and the children talking to some one while in the room where she passed. visitors can't see pics , please register or login
The second story is very sad and is about a lad called a Marmaduke Buckle he was physically handicapped and told even by his family that he would be a burden to them and society his whole life they beat him and made him do all the horrid and dangerous jobs all the while being nasty to him (in the 1700s it wasn’t good having a disability) so one day after a lot of this he went in the an up stairs store room carved his name, birthday, the date on that day and how old he was (17) in to a wooden roof beam and then hung himself from it. His sad looking spirit still roams the building to this day opening and closing doors and turning lights on and off. visitors can't see pics , please register or login
This church used to have a bigger grave yard but it was made smaller to build the road past it unfortunately although the head stones were moved the bodies were not so some time you may see a gentlemanly figure standing by his wife grave that is now the middle of the road ! No one has a clue who it is but he has been seen recently by a few people. visitors can't see pics , please register or login
The Golden Fleece has a number of ghosts including a woman in Victorian dress that walks through the wall a boy that tugs at your sleeve and a poltergeist in the cellar but the most recent and most seen is the ghost of a Canadian airman from WW2 , he was stationed in York and was staying in the top floor room. One day however he got a letter from his wife so sat on the bed to read it the letter was telling him she was leaving him for some one else, he was so heart broken that he went down to the bar and got very drunk , the next day the owner of the pub was opening up and fond him on the ground in front of the building the window in his room wide open. Its not clear if he fell or jumped but people have experienced pressure on the end of the bed as if some one were sitting on it when they are trying to sleep! visitors can't see pics , please register or login
The black swan has a ghost of a grumpy looking gentleman in Edwardian dress that looks at his pocket watch as if he is waiting to meet some one but then walks away in to a wall and a lady with long black hair wearing a white victorian gown stands at the fire place looking in to the fire as if in a trance bu if you get to close she just fades from view. This pub also has a cat spirit and you may feel him rub against your leg trying to ask for food :) visitors can't see pics , please register or login
The next is about Margret Clitherow , she was caught hiding a catholic priest in her priest hole, at the time there was a Protestant king/queen on the throne so this was bad, at her trial she would not say if she was guilty or not guilty so they took her to a bridge near Micklegate and made to lie on a sharp stone and was “Boarded “,(a door was put on top of her and heavy weights added by the jailers) to make her say if she was guilty or not guilty , but she said nothing and eventually succumbed to the weight and was crushed to death her friends came back the next day the only part of her not squashed or disfigured was her hand so they took it back to a convent near the micklegate , where it was put on display and as she died for her beliefs she was canonised and made a saint. Her ghost haunts the house where she once lived (on a side note there was three people in the crowd watching the kings men do this to Margret Clitherow namely Christopher and John wright and Guy Fawkes conspirators in the gunpowder plot to blow up the protestant king James the 1st ) visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Got back to the hotel and had a cuppa to calm my nerves before bed ! XD
Day 2 Got up had a nice cooked breaky (all you can eat and I defiantly needed it ! ) We went for a shot walk to near York race course called Tyburn here they used to also have a three legged mare … for hanging criminals on ! Most notably the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin ! The bookies from the race course took bets on how long the criminals brought there that week would take to die ! visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login
As we came back we passed The Bar Convent so went for a look around it and found Margret Clitherows hand kept as a relic by the alter in the chapel ( I think vecna was here also ! O0O) visitors can't see pics , please register or login
As the convent was small it didnt take much time to go around so after we went to the national railway museum Saw lots of steam engines including a mail train and some royal trains one of which made me feel a bit odd (later found out that that train was haunted as well ! But not till I got home) . Also saw Stevensons rocket , The Mallard the fastest steam train ever ! And some very big wheels ! XD also had a look at some model setups they even had the Tardis :)
After we went for a meal at the windmill pub (also haunted) but their food wasn’t that good , we went up to the room and watched telly and had a cuppa Day 3
After breaky we went in to the middle of York to Cliffords tower it is one of the rare mote and baily pastels still surviving and was originally made of wood see round sign for more info but of course there were nasty things that happened here to as you can see on the rectangle sign :( after climbing all the steps (very tiering they are steeper than they look ! This is what is inside visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Of course there would have been a a second floor where the top row of windows were the last time I came there was no roof either, that was finished last year and the modern stair case finished this year (I did go up the stairs couldn’t go along the walk ways it was to open and im afraid of heights ) This was as fort first off and has arrow slits so it can be defended ,as well as later on being part of a jail so there was a wall at the base of the mound and wasn’t open to tourists
Thank fully now the prison is mostly gone the only surviving part is within the castle museum. After I came out I spotted a merry go round and just had to have a go on it XD
After this we went to the Jorvik (pronounce this with a Y instead of a J) viking centre where you are sent on a journey to see hear and even smell back in time ! XD (its kind of a ride ;) first you can see some of the excavations of a viking house under plexiglass, visitors can't see pics , please register or login

After this we walked around to get some fresher air and went to Betty’s tea rooms , they have been open since 1919 ,and is very fancy ! I felt really posh ! Had to drink with my little finger out :D I got a pot of tea, some fish and chips and a lemon cake for pudding so tangy ! visitors can't see pics , please register or login
We also went on another walking tour called The bloody history of york hosted by “mad Alice” it was very fun and she was dressed up :D visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Day 4
I started day 4 with a bus tour that took an hour to go round the recorded narrator telling people about the buildings and sights on the way , got off at York Minster this took around 250 years to build as the builders kept dying of the plague ! And some fell off (no health and safety in them days !) visitors can't see pics , please register or login
After looking around here we went to the shortest street in the UK its called whip-ma whop-ma gate it only has 1 building on it and is only 10 metres long ! This is located at one end of the shambles (the inspiration for Diagon Ally in Harry Potter ) it used to all be butchers shops and there are still some hooks on the buildings where the meat was displayed , as you can see the buildings are stepped outwards and kind of lean toward each other , this was because people used to throw their poop out the windows in to the street so any being thrown from the floor above woollen land on the windows below :p visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Day 5 Got up quite early as we had an appointment at the cat cafe :) the resident cats are all rescues and they also have cats and kittens up for adoption. All the cats were so cute and the cafe had shelves and things for the cats to climb and jump on :) we had tea and cake while the kitties wondered about warning cuteness over load ahead :) visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Spent the afternoon there and went back and had some fish and chips from a nice chippy along the road from the hotel After we went to the york dungeons for one of the “late night tours” (more swearing and naughty bits XD )unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take pics there :/
Day6 On our last day we went to the York Castle Museum here you can see the prison and the walls that went around Cliffords tower, the museum now stands where the prison was and part of it still exists as part of the museum including the exercise yard now playing host to games for sprogs . First there was rooms set up from different eras 17th century visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And a school room “please miss” visitors can't see pics , please register or login
They also had a part dedicated to WW1 and WW2 visitors can't see pics , please register or login
They had projectors in the cells telling you about the person that was kept there including Dick Turpin ! Spent about 4 hours here ! Very interesting After we went to a chocolate shop and went back to the hotel as there wasn’t much open (it was Sunday) And saw some canoeists on the river Ooze visitors can't see pics , please register or login
