Tan BJDs: Dos and Don'ts?

Hello everyone!

So two days ago, I brought home my first ever BJD! I've been saving up for one for ages, planning to get a Lati Yellow, but when I saw this girl, I knew she was what I was looking for!

She is a Darak-i Tan Remy!

I have heard many stories about how tanned skin yellows unevenly or how special care must be taken of them because of the nature of the tan resin? I'm not too sure about this. But I would love to know if you have any tips for me with this skin colour and what I should take note of!

I live in Sunny Singapore and it's REALLY humid as well, I've been keeping her in a dark box with a silicon pack, is that enough?

I don't yet own a tanned or dark skin BJD myself, but I'm quite curious to see if anyone can offer any advice on this subject as I WILL have one one day! (one, Two, fourteen! ) We'd love to see pictures of your new resin baby, though!!

Hm, I haven't really done anything different with my tan dolly than my non-tan. I strive to keep all of them out of direct sunlight when they're just sitting around.

I don't have any tanned dolls, but I do have a couple of "fantasy" colored girls (one blue, one violet) and I just try to keep them and everyone else out of direct sunlight.  The only thing I know is that if you do any sanding on them for customizing, they tend to end up splotchy.

With tans they typically green instead of yellow. Looking at you Luts with your tan Delfs. Seriously most of the original ones are green. It's bad.

One big thing about tan is that the color is more brittle/soft/weak. It is more likely to crack, chip, dent, etc. Super tight stringing is generally a bad idea unless the tan is simply an outer shell and not all the way through. I had a Soom Chrome and once while he was being restrung we used a paint brush to hold the string and it just sunk right into the resin. The original tan Delfs also got horrible cracks in their necks due to that being a stress spot. My currently centaur is also cracking on the chest of his horse butt due to the pressure of his top half being strung so tightly to him. (I just reinforced it because I refuse to loosen his stringing.)

That's my biggest warning with the tans. X3

Well...that's disheartening o.o I didn't realize luts had this problem with their tan dolls...I'm going to need to keep an eye on my yul's neck then, just in case <.<

And dark tans sometimes go purple. 


That said though, I have 17 tan dolls (plus two in purple) and only one of them has gone green - and that doll is both fairly old (so from a period where fewer companies used UV-protected resin) and was bought second-hand from someone who had kept her on display in a lit case.  The others are all still normal colours, even after up to 7 years (although the ones that were sanded do have some colour variations due to that).

Is the newer Luts tan resin still as prone to yellowing? I thought they had solved the worst of that.

Most tan dolls nowadays are fairly even & stable color wise, but I remember a few years ago Ilehouse tan started turning pea green ><. No problems recently though! The thing about tan resin is it is more difficult to mix & come out evenly, so sometimes you get a marbling effect. Also marks from sanding stand out a lot more on darker resins. Just keep your doll away from sunlight as much as you can and you should be fine. ALL resin dolls will yellow over time. The material oxidizes and that affects the color. Even if you keep a doll in the dark forever it will still change color. In tan the color change is not very noticeable as long as the resin was well mixed.
