Off Topic / Re: lego Movie! Epically Awesome!!!! saw it today!
« on: February 09, 2014, 12:51:08 AM »
When I heard there was going to be a Lego movie I was kind of unimpressed but the previews look pretty funny.

And if you all haven't seen it yet: FROZEN. Went without kids and immediately got the soundtrack.  Amazing equality between make and female characters, everyone is flawed, everyone had strengths... nobody is perfect!  Also has a very direct approach to how romance is typically portrayed (unrealistically easy?) in Disney films.  Nicely done Disney.

Maybe I should have gone and done my own post instead of hijacking yours ;)

Love the color-coordination with her cutie mark!  Don't you just adore those resting ponies?

I knew this collecting would get out of hand so I limited (liberally) myself to several G1 collections:

White/light colored G1 baby ponies with terrible/no hair!!

Sunshine Ponies

I just melted my Beach Ball's hair, so I need a new one. :( Her hair wasn't great to begin with anyway
Mainsail to complete the collection!

I received my Sugar Apple in the mail today and I'm excited to clean her up for display.  I am redoing all of the Candy Cane Ponies hair that I have but am still on the lookout for a Lemon Treats.  I think Miss may have one for me and I can't wait to complete the set!

Some tail sites I've found (thank you authors of these sites) and they sometimes have amazing tips on other elements of restoration.

UPDATE re: crimps (what I am calling the little metal holder in the G1s, G2s and some G3s)

Since I just want to make sure that all of this work to un-rust a tail will last and not just rust over again, I De-crimped a tail today in order to remove all of the metal. Replacing the crimp with something else (a twisty-tie, zip-tie or bead) after I had taken the crimp off wasn't an issue but the crimp itself is REALLY hard to undo.

Also, when messing with the components and removing the washer, I noticed that even though the washer was rusted, the crimp doesn't seem to be rusty at all.  I've seen metals interact like this before and think that the crimp is probably made out of aluminum and washers are probably zinc or steel (as they typically are) and since aluminum doesn't rust like steel or zinc might so maybe the crimp wouldn't rust like I thought it would.  Maybe just removing the washer is enough to halt the affect over time.

That's such a good point!  I hadn't even thought of making wings any other way than clay!  It makes me think that a thread like this could be even more interesting than I thought!

Re-tailing: No, not like at the mall, but putting a tail back into a pony that needed to be de-rusted, cleaned, or replaced...but there is the trick of putting it back...

1. How do you put an old tail back without messing it up?

2. Sometimes metal elements cause rust so, what do you use to anchor a tail when you have removed the metal elements? Beads?  Crimps?

3. Is there a good technique to take the metal elements (like the crimps) off of a tail?

How do YOU re-tail?

I've been wanting to make some wings for various ponies but don't know where to start...especially seeing how amazing some of yours are!  How do you make your wings?

Pony Corral / "Highlighter Marks" are not children's fault! Science!
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:52:00 PM »
So, as I have been trolling ebay ("trolling" in the traditional searching way, not the mean way) I have been noticing that people see highlighter marks on ponies and I thought that was a little strange that SO many kids use highlighters on ponies.  Plus, it's always yellowish-green highlighter.  Well, after collecting and noticing patterns on my own 2nd set of rainbow ponies (year 3) I noticed that these ponies have a higher likelihood of highlighter.

Think of the following:
1. Notice how BRIGHT the yellow streak is in this series?
2. Notice how mane colors FADE?

On a side note, where do colors "go" when they fade?  Well, I haven't noticed the yellow fade, although the blue and pink certainly do.

Take a look at the colors here: http://www.ponylandpress.com/us/rainbow2.shtml

My theory is that the "highlighter marks" are actually the bright yellow mane, after 30 years, laying color down on the vinyl pony.

Maybe this point has been belabored by veterans, but I found it a common possible misconception.

I sure would love to see the other areas of the site.  Maybe once you get to know me?

Personal:

How old are you?
28 and a half.

Where do you live? State, Country?
Portland, Oregon, USA

Do you work or attend school? Profession or major?
I'm a substitute teacher and an artist.  I take classes periodically and love psychology (my major for my undergrad).

Who are the important people in your life?
My boyfriend Reid, who supports my obsession, and my two darling babies: Annie and Toby, Westie-poodle-pomeranian mixes.

Ponies:

How long have you been collecting?
Only a couple of months.  But I am hooked.

Which generations of ponies do you collect? G1, G2, G3 or G4?
As a child of the 80s, I am a collector of the G1's (I have a weird feeling attempting to customize that generation) and obtain the other generations as customizing fodder.  Lately I have been able to find a few newer generations that are dead-perfect hair matches for older ones.  For me it's only realistic to try to match series like rainbow ponies since I have several to use to try to match the colors.

What made you want to collect ponies?
Partly childhood nostalgia and I LOVE RAINBOW-Y THINGS.  A girl from my boyfriend's work likes ponies too and it made me feel comfortable enough to go for it, even though I am almost 30.

Tell us about your collection!
I only collect G1 ponies with multi-colored hair:
-Candy Cane Ponies
-Rainbow Ponies (both years released)
-Sunshine Ponies
-Brush n' Grow Ponies
-Random other ones with multi-colored hair like Pillow Talk and the Year 1-7(?) Unicorns.

I know, I am a total n00b to this site and a little bit to ponies as well, but I am totally obsessed!  I love customizing and refurbishing (my G1 confetti pony is looking great with her new hair!) and I am excited to fill out my collection and express my creativity through ponies!

Thanks to Miss (who I met on ebay earlier) to reminding me to get on the forum!
