Do you have a pic of the card itself? :o

Yes! It's not like it's a rare and elusive piece of merchandise. I had them as a kid, and I was able to buy a brand new box on eBay at one point.

Pony Corral / Was Pinkie Pie's original name CUTIE PIE?
« on: January 21, 2023, 11:29:17 PM »
Completely overlooked a childhood Valentine card of mine that says "Hi, Cutie Pieā„¢! Happy Valentine's Day!", with a picture of Pinkie Pie. The back of the card says Cutie Pie is a trademark of Hasbro, 2003. I can't remember if there's confirmation or any other sources anywhere on this being her actual name at any point, or if it was just speculation. Either way, not talked about much, it seems.

Ponytopia was the first site I checked for info, nope. eMLP seems to be down, not that it was easy to navigate in the first place. Obviously no info on MLW, and no info about it on Strawberry Reef. Even Googling doesn't come up with any immediate results, granted I haven't looked deep enough (lots of FiM speculation getting in the way)

Ironically, I don't see a trademark for CUTIE PIE from Hasbro. According to USPTO, the absolute earliest G3 trademark (not including ones for MY LITTLE PONY) was for RAINBOW DASH on 9/11/2002, "intended to cover the category of toy ponies and accessories for use therewith". The earliest for Pinkie Pie was PINKIE PIE, "intended to cover the categories of candy cake decorations, chewing gum and candy", dated 11/13/2002.

Was Pinkie Pie really originally CUTIE PIE, or do you think it was a mistake on American Greetings' (who made the Valentines) part?

Had her in my childhood collection. She is sooooo gorgeous. Purple is not my favourite colour but I make exceptions for wine-y shades. Who can say no to dark colours on a pony? I prefer her original release to her Seaside Celebrations release. I like the pearl on the dark body, the matte makes her a bit boring. For the balloon release, I don't like 2006+ poses.

Had her in my childhood collection. Meh? One of the better 3D Cutie Marks IMO, I think it's cute, but I don't like the pose. I don't know what it is about later G3s but they look a bit dopey to me. Yellow and pink are a bit oversaturated too (don't look at me) (I'm the exception) (I'm cool). ESPECIALLY in the late 2006-2007 timeframe... Peach Blossom, Summer Bloom, Pearly Pie...? You also have Gem Blossom back in 2004 who has the same colours.

...and they're ALL flower-themed too. See! I'm the exception!

Received my items yesterday! Very cute and very big. You also have to be VERY careful. The "care" instructions on the product listing weren't kidding saying that these aren't allowed to touch... well, anything. :lookround: I was able to smudge my "Tangerine Twinkle" pin. I think I can clean it off but you have to be VERY VERY careful! The listing says "no body oils" which makes me think... why is this jewelry in the first place if you can't even pick them up with your bare hands?
:what:

I've also learned that shiny acrylic is difficult to photograph...

Pony Corral / Re: Will G4 have a nostalgia wave?
« on: January 15, 2023, 10:04:10 PM »
I think it will eventually, but at the same time, G4 isn't entirely retired yet. When G1 was done, it was DONE for the most part. G4 technically ended in 2020, but companies are still coming out with G4 collectibles and such, and the fandom is very much active. It's something that hasn't really ever gone away. Have you seen the covers for the G5 comics? Insert expletive here, they can't get rid of the Mane 6! It feels like they have little faith in G5 and they have to plaster Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy on every issue to get people to buy it (when to my knowledge, they're not even in the book)! I don't know if they would do something specifically for nostalgia. If they keep making G4 merch indefinitely, someone is eventually going to go "oh yeah, I remember that", because it's always there.

As for G3, I've been wondering a lot myself about G3 nostalgia. I see very few people actually my age, when we were the target demographic when G3 first came out. All the people I see talking about G3 are *kids*, 14-19, and when they DO talk about it, it's like, Minty Christmas onward, very little talk or respect about 2003-mid 2005. Talk is usually media-centric too instead of toy-centric. It definitely feels more like "I like this because it's cozy"/"I don't like the brony fandom, this is safer and comfier" than actually "I grew up with this". From what little I've seen from G3 spaces, there's hardly a collector scene, it's all fanart and sharing gifs and screencaps of Minty Christmas or Runaway Rainbow. If you see pictures of actual pony toys it's just reposts from MLW. There's been a surge of interest in "wholesome media". It's kind of exhausting honestly, having a gen boiled down to something "G4-ified", fans interacting with it media-first, instead of revolving around the toys and our childhood experiences outside of "I think I might have owned a single Pinkie Pie when I was like two years old... maybe". It's preferable to the early-FiM bashing it got but it feels like a weird "forgotten middle child". You see people nostalgic for G1 because of childhood experience with the TOYS and I connect with and relate to them more than kids who just like Minty Christmas because it's "comfy". Even if there's people who try to G4-ify G1 and try to make it deeper and more expansive than it is, there's still always going to be the simpler fanbase of collectors I can relate to. G3 doesn't really have that. A place like the Arena feels like home because we all like the funny little rainbow horses we played with as kids. If I go into a kids' G3 group, I always feel alienated when I theoretically shouldn't... that IS my generation, right? Where are the people who are into G3 the way I am...?

Find the people who were there in 2003 when it dropped, then we'll talk. Other G3 fans might be too young still.

Pony Corral / Re: Clever ways to display your ponies?
« on: January 13, 2023, 08:58:19 PM »
Not the most incredible way to display ponies, but I've been using floral foam as risers. I get seasonal foliage (fake, of course) and picks to stab in there every holiday and mix things up a lot. :) I don't have a lot of shelf space so everything gets rotated every few months. Like I get out my autumny and Halloween ponies the end of August and I get out the Halloween picks and the autumn leaves. Right now for winter I have some glittery pine picks in there and I strung little fake lights on them for Christmas.

I need to find something for summer. After Easter Walmart goes full-on America through Memorial Day and Fourth of July, and after Fourth of July everything gets turned into Back-to-School, and after Back-to-School is Halloween... :/ I could always browse Michaels, they should be my best bet, but I want to see everything in person before I buy because these things tend to be too big for my shelf and I want to make sure everything would fit. I rarely get to go to Michaels, it's too far out of the way...

I went to Target for the first time since 2020 and all of the toys are totally sold out except MLP, which is completely stocked. I was thinking "well, at least ONE of these empty spots HAS to be MLP", but no... I checked the tags and they weren't. Nobody wants these toys. :lookround: Walmart still has all of the Sunny plushes from last year, boxes and boxes of them, on the shelf. There's so many they had to put excess boxes on the top shelf. Not only that, if you look at Walmart, Amazon, etc toy catalogues for Christmas MLP gets a single dinky showing on a page showing off other more interesting toys. LOLs and Rainbow Highs get full pages, MLP gets a single little picture of Jazz Hooves alongside 20 other brands and that's it.

2022 in general has been terrible. What have we gotten this year? Jazz and MWM? That's it? And one more wave of identical looking poseable figures? Zero brushables aside from the styling size. They had a whole Christmas special and no.... Christmas toys? :lookround: Even Best Gift Ever had some toy stuff, even if it sucked.

We're in Year2 and we haven't gotten any like... birthday cakes or real party supplies. There have been some paper plates or whatever in some countries at most. Maybe Year3 we'll get something. Anything? Birthday cards? Stockings? Easter baskets? VALENTINES? Any sort of merchandise? Hello? Everything I see is still G4.

We do have a few Christmas ornaments but to be honest everything from G5 is lackluster. They use the same models for everything. Even if it's third party, everything is identical. Even G4 was marginally more exciting because everyone had to make their own sculpts for the characters. Now they just use the same thing over... and over... and over... and over... and over...

Like what's the problem? Is G5 actually doing bad? Does Hasbro not have faith?

MLP's 40th is coming up. Just days away, even. Hasbro, pick up the pace! Have some passion! Show some respect! Though I expect all of that from Basic Fun instead...

So is this the same game that can be found for PC in Microsoft Store with the same name?
I used to have that one on PC, but it was pretty boring.

They haven't updated the PC version for years and years... the upside to that it's easy to hack. :sly: The most up-to-date versions would be on mobile devices.

For anyone preferring to play on PC, you can do so just fine using an emulator like Bluestacks. Admittedly a bit slow, though, if you have a more... "average" computer. My laptop I bought in 2018 could run it fine, but it would get a bit warm and I couldn't have much else running in the background.

I think Starlight and Melody, too, are easy to mix up. They're the same shade of pink and they're also quite similar in themeing... at least I think so. Melody wants to be a musician, a... star, perhaps?

I didn't like Pinkie Pie as a child when I was the target demographic for G3. I liked her at the start because she was the "little sister" but as time went on and she became the "leader" I didn't like it. It didn't help that she has the same voice as Sarah from Ed, Edd n Eddy, making her even more obnoxious and bratty to me. XD

I don't like the more pastel look they ended up giving her down the line too. I like the dark pink body, light pink hair. Eventually they made her entirely the same colour. Not dissimilar to how they lightened up/brightened Rainbow Dash... she went from a cloudy, grey-ish blue colour to teal, to a sky blue. The pearly bodies really make them special too compared to the lighter/brighter matte bodies... I love the (relative) jewel-y, dusky look of early G3. I wish MLP did more jewel tones. Kimono is gorgeous and the prototype Star Catcher they have in the pamphlet is to die for. It's an elegant look for MLP and it's too bad people want baby pink all the time. I had my pastel phase and it burned out too quickly. I've gone back to my childhood roots of loving warm colours and jewel tones. :P My very first favourite colour was red!

I was expecting a 40th celebration, good to see it's (apparently) going to happen.

Don't disappoint, Hasbro!
