Where have the Unicorns gone?

Styling Size Rarity! I was so happy, I totally forgot buying her! So that made me want to dig out all my G3 unicorns and display them. I searched through my G3s and this is what I found:

Being an avid MLP unicorn collector, I specifically remember searching out all the unicorns and buying all of them. I thought that this just can't be right, there must be more unicorns. I must not have found them all! So I took a look on Strawberry Reef and sure enough, asides from variants of Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and a Styling Size Cheerilee, this is it ;_; It made me sing "Where have the unicorns gone?" from the G1 episode of missing unicorns! Seriously, why so few?! There must be 1 unicorn for every 40 earth ponies! We didn't even get a baby uni either

I am relieved that there are lots of unicorns in the G4 line. It took several years after G3s were introduced to come out with pegasi, then a year or so more to come out with unicorns. Now I'm on the hunt for all the G4 unicorns!

The really crazy thing is that whenever they showed "Unicornia" in the G3 cartoons there were all these unicorns there with GREAT designs that they could've made.

I really do not get G3's "ALMOST ALL EARTH PONIES EARTH PONIES EARTH PONIES" thing.  Yes, have some earth ponies.  And then have an equal amount of pegasi and unicorns for diversity!

Yeah, it's sad that I'm only two unicorns away from having all the G3 unis. Same with pegasi, though I think there were a few more of those, without actually counting.

I think Brights Brightly is my favorite G3 Uni.

That's one of my favorite G1 songs, I find myself singing that sometimes randomly. I've often wondered why there are so few G3 unicorns too... There are some lovely poses that could have been reproduced more.

Strawberry Reef has only 1 more unicorn listed for G3: Styling Cheerilee (purple.) I love them all!

At the time of the G3 line, Hasbro wanted to stay away from unicorns and pegasi because they thought "magical" ponies would be unpopular.

There are more pegasi due to coming out a year or so beforehand but still fairly rare too.

And then after the second year of the unicorns... came the brilliant Core 7 idea.

eta:  But yes - the only one you're missing is Styling Cheerilee.  Who is quite cute methinks, but nothing at all like the current Cheerilee.  Kind of weird how that particular pony mutated so much o.o

I think they were just trying to cut costs.  Unicorns are always popular.  I mean, who in their right mind would think that the same little girl who wants pink and purple ponies would turn up her nose at something even more magical and is often associated with princesses?

Ironically, I swear the G4 line has more unicorn characters than any other breed.

As for G4 unicorns, I own more of those than Earth or pegasus (assuming I counted correctly). ;

It's rather sad that the g3 line released so few unicorns as I'm sure they popular. 

Maybe if they'd had more time before their "brilliant" core 7 concept?

I think it's kind of weird that most G4 unicorns are pink. We have: Twinkleshine, Lulu Luck, Sweetie Swirl, Starbeam Twinkle, Star Dreams, Rainbow Flash, Cherry Pie, Cadence, and Celestia. I think Hasbro assumes that little girls only want pink unicorns, or just pink ponies for that matter. Most girls only like pink because merchandisers tell them to like pink.

Rainbow Flash seems more purple-ish to me, but yeah, lots of pink unicorns.

First I am an "Earth" girl so I can cope with an Earth pony bias ....however I do think it is a little sad at how few Uni [and Peg] ponies ever made it into the G3 line. Mind you I suppose it makes them even more special and magical doesnt it! Your Uni MIB collection is amazing Shenanigans!

@ StarlightGaze: Wierd, isn't it, that marchandisers decided to make unicorns pink?  For decades, they were all white, as witnes most of the unicorn stuff from my youth.  Unicorns and rainbows and Lisa Frank.  Soooo eighties...
