Spoiler
I wouldn't say there are no Misfits...
Spoiler
The stinger is not a part of the movie, and this doesn't deserve the sequel needed to get them in.  If the IDW comic could bring them in from the start, the movie could have.  Maybe they could have replaced the ripped footage, Google Earth zoom ins, and the other little trinkets the movie tried to substitute for an actual plot.

There were actually 2 pony cameos! When the girls are playing music & dressing up in the garage, there's a giant plush Frilly Frocks in a plastic bag in the background. It's clearly visible in several shots.

In the flashback scene, that's definitely the 25th anniversary Cotton Candy. It has bright pink hair. I think the other pony was a Fashion style Princess Cadance.

I'm a huge Jem fan & went into the movie with very very VERY low expectations. I will say that it exceeded my expectations & was a reasonable good story brought into a believable modern-day world. There were a lot of nods to the original series (some not as obvious as others), as well as well-placed cameos from people involved in the original show. If you are on the fence, give it a chance.

It's nice to hear something positive about it!

As for the G4 thing... it was probably for marketing purposes. :P

Wow, a giant plush Frilly Frocks?  Every generation represented except the one that would actually be sold in 1999.  (I think G2s were still sold in the US at that point.)

I wonder if Hasbro supplied plush Frilly Frocks.

That looks like maybe Princess Sterling? Either way with her and frilly frocks that was a bit of an oops..but at least Cotton Candy is passable.

I think the Frilly is actually a reasonable one for the time line, along with the retro release Cotton Candy. The girls are supposed to be teenagers now & went to life with their aunt around 10 years ago. So the flashback to where they are playing with ponies would put them at 2005 or after. Frilly was sold in 2005 & the Retro CC was in 2007, I think.
I'm not sure where the year 1999 came from, but the movie timeline doesn't go back quite that far.

The camera's time stamp says it's November of 1999.

Sort of off topic, but I noticed that the Jem "soundtrack" has popped up on Spotify... and it features Hillary Duff, for some reason?

The camera's time stamp says it's November of 1999.

Aside from Princess Sterling, it seems like it's mostly the time stamp that's throwing things out of whack. I haven't seen the movie, but isn't Jerrica supposed to be an older teen? And those kids are what, seven or eight? So if that video was taken ten-ish years ago, the time stamp should be in the mid-2000s, which fits Frilly and repro CC. If it is actually supposed to be 1999, that not only makes the G3 era ponies anomalies, but also puts Jerrica in her 20s for the film's plot. Maybe someone just did the math wrong during production?

Now I'm wondering if the timestamp was ever explained or . . . ?  In the cartoon Jem was probably in her 20s, did they start out with her in her 20s in the script and then change her to a teen?

If it was supposed to be the mid-2000s the G3s and retro Cotton Candy would fit in, but it would still leave the G4 pony (I agree that it looks like a Cadence toy) as an anachronism.
