Title: Red Rubber Bands?
Post by: aspiesinger on September 18, 2012, 02:18:23 PM
(Hopefully this is the right forum, lol.)

I styled my Applejack figure awhile back, and I'm going to be working on using a tutorial to make her a hat. BUT I realized I never went and found myself some proper red rubber bands for her hair. I'm currently using red hair bands, the smallest ones I could find, but they're way too large and it makes her look plain silly. I've looked around, but I can't seem to find any tiny, red rubber bands (when I say this I mean like the clear ones pony hair usually has on it in the packaging).

So, does anyone know where I could find something that fits this description? Any help would be appreciated.

I have used the rubberbands that I used with my braces way back when I had them (not 'used' bands, just the left overs I had). Perhaps you can get ahold of some of those? They are pretty small.

When I had braces I used to have bags and bags of tiny rubber bands. Maybe ask in a chemist?

If you look in the hair accessories section at Walmart or the dollar store (or any store, really), they sell packs of little colored bands similar to the ones they use in packaging the ponies. ^_^ I use them all the time.

This probably doesn't help but my Applejack came with a tiny red elastic band in her hair already xx

I never had braces. :/ I still need them, but I'm going to get invisalign, LOL. I don't really have anyone to ask for them, so I don't know that that's an option.

Is that the same thing as a dentist?

According to Walmart's website, none of my Walmarts have anything that fits the bill in stock near me, they have one box of red ones online but I can't tell how large they are. They seem big. -_- I'll have to hit up my local dollar stores if I have no luck with Walmart.

So did mine, but it broke. o_o I'd still need another for her tail though. I'm about to just buy two more Applejacks and jack their rubber bands (harhar I'm so funny).

I considered that, but it wouldn't go right with the way I'm doing mine. :/ Thanks though.

The manufacturer is Goody, they come in a blister pack with like 100 to a pack.  Just wander the little girls' hair accessories, they should be right with them.  You also might want to think about using clear elastics though, as the color in the rubber bands can leak out over time and stain the pony hair.  I know, I know, not show-accurate, but it would prevent accidental damage!

You ll get little bands like this in most hair/beauty styling retailers as well. Like a Sallys or Salon Services.

Just a note to make you aware that these little bands do degrade over time and as a consequence often the colour leaches into the hair leaving it with a red strain. It normally takes quite some time for this to happen and is subject to the conditions the rubber is exposed to...but it is something you should be aware of and maybe just replace the band every now and again to insure it doesnt happen to your AJ :)

Target should have them, too; that's where I got mine.  :)

Could you use the clear ties and then loop a red ribbon over it?  Would that work or is it still not the right style?

Yes, I used to work at walmart and that's where they are. ;)

Ahh so many suggestions! I hear you guys about the leeching, I'll probably change the band every so often like hathorcat said. I guess technically I could use a clear band and then wrap a red one over it, but I'm not sure if that would end up looking bulky. And the style I'm looking for is for the band to be fairly thin so I can wrap it around and it not end up being huge, as her bands in the show aren't exactly massive (I'm really picky about details, it's painstaking when I style my ponies hair). I'm going to look into everyone's suggestions and I'll let you guys know where I found success, and I'll try to post up a photo when I get a chance so you can see my finished product! Thanks everyone.

Definitely check the actual stores too, I've found a lot of things don't seem to be listed on the websites but are sold in the store. Plus, that way you can tell for sure how big the bands you're getting are, and you're not stuck with a bunch that you can't use.

In regards to the color leeching/staining, I've used these, both the Goody brand ones and the cheaper dollar-store ones, on ponies, and dolls, for years and have never noticed any problem with leeching. I've actually got several dolls that had the bands in their hair for upwards of two years, and no stains at all.

I will, Wal-mart's website has always been kinda crappy anyway. The leeching may vary, Applejack's light blonde hair might be more prone to getting stained than others would be.

You have some good suggestions here!

I will need to add them to my list, we have a rather large Claire's in my local mall. :)

Also, I actually came down with a really bad sinus infection so my rubber band hunt is on pause for the moment. :(
