Pony Corral / Re: Are ALL Hallmark 2021 Powder G1 Ornaments BROKEN?
« on: July 19, 2021, 07:13:31 PM »
Yes, they are all like that.  I got mine home, saw the weird leg and then took it back the same day.  Then the employee and I quickly realized they were all like that.  Even the  display one.  I wonder if there was an issue with the mold and this is how the factory decided to “fix” it.  It is disappointing, especially since this was a pony I was particularly looking forward to.  But I am still keeping mine since I have a full set.

I just posted this in the other thread but I’ll post it here, too.  Hasbro just released another short gif on Facebook along with the boy’s name:  Hitch Trailblazer.

I think that image looks much better than the previous ones.  Less uncanny valley for me.

I agree that the names are disappointing and not very pony-like.

I find it fascinating that they have chosen to make their primary character orange considering the general unpopularity of the color.

Does anyone else get G1 SS Buttons vibes off the unicorn? Same species, colors very similar, button cutie mark...

I’m looking forward to seeing other images.  I hope they translate into toys better than the images look.  I was trying to figure out what it is about the faces that is off putting.  Right now I think it is that they have even more human shaped faces, less stylized than g4 or Pony Life, but then they made the necks longer.  So it looks like a human head on a horse neck.  The teeth don’t help.  Has mlp ever had this much teeth?

I’m ok with the color designs of the characters but I’m not a fan of the different colored body parts like the wings, horn or hooves.

I’m curious how the color gradient is going to translated to the toys.  Having gradients in the hair would be cool but I just don’t see Hasbro doing it on the regular toys.  It’ll probably end up being stripes instead.

I will say this and then I will leave this discussion.   I never once said or implied that “no one would care” about Twinkle Eyes.  I was just merely trying to point out that not everyone needs a re-make to exactly match the original.  Some people even enjoy having the alternative.

Obviously some of you are extremely passionate about it.  So much so that maybe you don’t realize how very aggressive and even a little hurtful your replies have been.

What's character design got to do with it?

Someone who is a fan of a character, especially if they are a fan of the show, may not care about the gimmicks.  Fizzy is still Fizzy even if she doesn’t have the twinkle eyes.  Or maybe she gets flocking or twice as fancy symbols.  She’s still Fizzy.  And a lot of people would still want her.

And some random artist on DA making merch with regular eyes is different from a toy company reproducing a set that revolves solely aound a gimmick.

? I wasn’t talking about random artists on DA?    Every piece of official Retro merchandise that I’ve seen for years has depicted Fizzy with regular eyes.

And people collect de-flocked SS ponies? So what? That's people deliberately altering a gimmicky toy.

People like that character and don’t like the flocking gimmick.  If they could buy a Bangles, for example, without the flocking then they wouldn’t have to alter the vintage one?  An example of the gimmick not being the be-all and end-all?

  I just meant for this to be a fun discussion.  My opinion doesn’t in any way effect what Basic Fun will or will not do.

Twinkle Eyes are kind of not Twinkle Eyes unless they have...well...twinkle eyes. That is the entire point of the set so if they're willing to revise Sparkler's hair because it's not close enough to the original (speculated reason), it would be odd for them to produce this set without the key feature of the set. Would be like selling the Rainbow ponies with different hair.

Not that I rule it out, it just seems pointless to issue this set without issuing the key feature of that set.

Then what's the point of making them at all? They can't be Twinkle Eyes without the rhinestones.

It's fair that if they are going to advertise them as the Twinkle Eyed set that it makes sense to include that feature.

My thought process is just that the jewel eyes might be integral as a unifying feature to the set but not integral to the character design?   I don't know that the Rainbow ponies is the best comparison.  If you took the Rainbow feature away, you would then have to redesign part of the pony.  To me, the twinkle eyes are more like glitter symbols or flocking.   Plenty of people would have bought the previous Basic Fun ponies if they had painted symbols only.  And plenty of people currently collect non-flocked and de-flocked versions of So-Soft ponies.

And also, plenty of people collect Fizzy merch when the art depicts her with regular eyes.  ;)

Although I guess they could put glitter on their eyes or something?  But I would guess they'd give them jewel eyes.  Unless they couldn't figure out how to keep them securely in place.  (Like, to make sure they aren't a choking hazard.)

I mean, that's a legitimate possibility.   Additionally, lots of non-pony people find the jewel eyes creepy.  Depending on how much they are banking on pure nostalgia* or how much they want to draw in a modern audience that just likes the idea of a classic MLP with little regard to how authentic it is.

*True, they changed Sparkler's hair which seems to indicate that they are listening closely to collectors.  On the other hand, Sparkler's hair was an easy fix where as the twinkle eye gimmick isn't something that could be changed mid-stream.

I have NEVER seen a pony with an eye popped out unless it was on purpose by a customizer.  Just rock (ho ho like a GEM) solid.  :)

In regards to the Twinkle Eye, do y’all think they will reproduce the actual jewel eye?  I’m actually kind of hoping they will use the characters but give them regular eyes.  I think that would be a nice variant to the originals.

Thoughts?

I found both variants of Sparkler!  My Target sold through 2 sets with the first Sparkler and when they put out the 3rd set it was the one with the striped mane/no red in tail.

I’m so sorry to hear that  :(

I had a similar experience with using oxyclean on a princess pony.  It will take the metallic paint right off the jewel.

Those are cute! I think I had the originals back in the 80's...I know I had Wuzzles ones and Smurfs for sure, but about 80% positive I had pony ones as well.

That’s really cool!  I don’t think I’ve ever seen the original ones.  I wonder if anyone still has theirs.  It would be fun to see which ponies where featured.
